If you're using Solidworks 2012 then there's an even quicker option. In the lower right hand corner is a pull up menu that lists the units currently selected. Opening that menu will bring up all the available options.

just insert your dimensions value followed by unit abbrevation. for ex:
12345 mm or 12345 in
it automatically change value to solidworks settings unit
open these files:
C:\ProgramData\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2012\templates\Part.prtdot
C:\ProgramData\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2012\templates\Assembly.asmdot
C:\ProgramData\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2012\templates\Drawing.drwdot
change the units as Adam Baker told, and save the files..
by this way, every time you open a new file, the units would be the same and you don't need to change them.
For solidworks 2015 and windows 10
open these files:
C:\ProgramData\SOLIDWORKS\SOLIDWORKS 2015\templates
there are three file for part, assembly and drawings.
open all this three file one by one with solidworks, change the unit according to above mentioned any one method and again save the file at same location.
Done.
Option 1: At the right down coner of your window, you can find an arrow showing up.click and choose which suites you batter.
Option 2: Click setting, options, documents proparties, dimention(choose your dimention) ok
With a part open, you can also quickly change them by finding a small box in the lower right corner of your screen. It may say one of the following: "IPS", "MMGS", "Custom" etc. Click on it and a pop up menu appears with a list of units settings. This will convert your part to the system on units you choose.
all of the above answers are incorrect. except for Mr. Romano, although this would get quite annoying. I don't have time to do the homework but there is a mythical template that is on your computer that is saved with the units you started your very first model with, you must find this template and edit it accordingly.
