  1. Sketch the profile (circle with rope diameter)

  2. Sketch the rope centreline (use a helix for the rope around the drum), 3D sketch might be helpful.

  3. Use a Sweep to turn 1 & 2 into a rope.

  4. Apply (from the right pane) Appearances > Miscellaneous > Pattern > Screw Thread to get a rough appearance of wire rope.

  5. Adjust the mapping in "Edit appearance" to align and size the pattern.
