I am wondering where are these engineers getting design data and parameters for complex machines like engines, aircrafts etc.,

I am planning to develop a portfolio. As I dont know where to acquire design data about complex machines, I am focusing on random things around me . Can you guys help me with some website or place where i could get design data or dimensions of any machine. I would love to spend my time on creating those.
