What is a virtual component in top down assembly in SW?

A virtual component in SolidWorks is a component that doesn't have its own file; typically a part that is created and saved within an assembly. It's listed in the feature tree and "behaves" as any other part. You can right-click it and choose to save it in a separate file to turn it into a "real" part.
