Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Design a watch that incorporates wood and metal elements and has an open movement design utilizing a circular mechanical movement.
Requirements: We are looking for a design that will utilize a few materials. As the company name is Woodchip Design, we need to integrate wood into the design somehow. The reclaimed materials will hopefully have a story that we can utilize to differentiate the watch. Going along with the storyline, we urge the designers to have either a time, place or person in mind when designing. This will give the watch a unique back story on which the design reflects its heritage. As part of the brand image, we want to have an open face watch. This means that there will be no traditional face. Instead you will see the working internals of a mechanical wind watch. This means that you need to be creative with some sort of tick mark or number for actual time keeping. We will be using variant of the ETA 6497 and 6498 mechanical movements. We have included a few but search the web for images as they come in many different finishes. The movement is 36.6mm in diameter and 4.5mm thick. It may be a bit thicker if you want a movement wind generator.
Materials and Finishes:
-Bamboo or reclaimed woods and hardwoods
-Brass, bronze, stainless steel, titanium,
-Natural leathers
-Any finishes, brushed, stained, chromed, dark chromed, natural petina, painted, powder coated
We love all looks and are really going for something quite different and out of the box. We love the craftsmanship of ww2 bombers and formula cars. We also love the steampunk look. We are leaning toward something that is a little classy yet would be a conversation starter. And by the way, we do not prefer metal bands! That's why we want you to get creative with leather work. You can laser etch or do whatever you want to dress up the band if you feel it needs it.
There is a large selection of watch movements on this site to get a feel for design direction: http://bit.ly/OLsFR7 also http://www.tourbywatches.com/shop/page/5?sessid=yte3i1bukz9Ujwi5803kao3u92vrmgtvBQ2Rn8TrGSVjjWa9cBvzRipFGkk27fzJ&shop_param=
Get creative!

Winners will be chosen by a joint jury of Woodchip Design and GrabCAD.
Judging criteria:
Manufacturability: Can the design be manufactured using available methods
Finishes: are the finishes available or will a new process need to be invented. Can the watch be adorned in different finishes for continuation series?
Creativity: Is the watch different from what is already out there? Is it a conversation starter? Does it have history or a back story? Is it the piece that defines you and completes a look? Does it integrate wood in a unique way? Is all or part of the mechanical skeleton movement visible front and back? Is the time readable using numbers or tick marks somewhere? Does the design include the logo somewhere on the body, crown, strap buckle, or face?

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!
CCG about 13 years ago
i don't get it?? do we need to design the entire watch or just the body, glass and cover of the watch??? I guess so
Sylvain Gerber about 13 years ago
Ah Ah !!!!
Nick Hampton about 13 years ago
More custom piece orientated than production orientated design? Do you have a consumer price margin as a guideline?
JF Brandon about 13 years ago
@ghioca - conceptualize a watch, glass, body cover and all....
Matt Stinson about 13 years ago
do we need to make the mechanism for our designs?
John Huizingh about 13 years ago
I think we can use this one? Watch movement
Ravichandra J P about 13 years ago
I guess they do not need a mechanism..... let me know about it...
Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
I think the renderings would look better with a mechanism inside.
Romano Gaspari about 13 years ago
Missing file format
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Ghioca,
We would like you to use the ETA 6497 or 6498 mechanical movements. if you google those you will find many different variations that you can either insert into your model during rendering or just use as a reference when submitting your entry. there are many many different finishes but remember we want part or all of the movement showing.
Mstino,
no need to make the mechanism. it is 36.6mm in diameter and 4.5mm thick. for visualization i would love to see it in the design or rendering though. helps get the whole picture together.
John,
that model can be used although it would need to be scaled to the correct dimensions mentioned above
Romano,
file format is .stp or .igs for cad. rendering file format is open as there are so many different softwares and formats.
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Also,
price point is dictated by the movement, which will be around 300-1000$. It will be a limited run of watches, about 300.
louie dietz about 13 years ago
If it can be cleanly done, I would like to integrate the woodchip WC logo... do what you can.
Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
Louie dietz, can we have a bigger picture of the logo? Because its hard to do it after that small picture. Thanks.

Great competition. Are you considering custom bridges for the movement (i.e. custom skeletonised design or full plate bridge), or sticking to what's readily available?
The link to Tourby's site is definitely the best resource and he's a really nice guy to deal with!
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Ross,
I would absolutely consider custom bridges and modifications to the eta movement. agreed, tourby is the one to deal with.

could you send movement part in step format?
Ivan Spasić about 13 years ago
what do you mean with this "This means that you need to be creative with some sort of >>tick mark or number<< for actual time keeping" can you expalin me in more details please?
Vaibhav Bhujbal about 13 years ago
I have a question some1 please let me know as it is said open face watch does that mean that it should not have a glass covering at the top???
Jacek Koczmierowski about 13 years ago
You wrote "we do not prefer metal bands!" So bands must be leather bands or it can be for example wood bands ?
Alan Baird about 13 years ago
hi any chance you can put a step file for the watch movement in the the spec download as I cant convert catpart file
Thanks
Danny Tasmakis about 13 years ago
The back of the Tourby movement has the more gears and details exposed than the front, when you say 'open face design' there's not much to show on the front of the movement. All of Tourby's examples show off the underside of the watch and the front faces are traditional movement 'covered' designs.
Vaibhav Bhujbal about 13 years ago
Thanks Danny :)
Simon Kwan about 13 years ago
I second Alan's request. Please upload a more universally accessible format for the movement data. Thanks!
Danny Tasmakis about 13 years ago
John Huizingh above mentioned his model he did a while back has neutral formats, it's the same movement Watch movement
Simon Kwan about 13 years ago
Thank you Danny Tasmakis for pointing out John Huizingh's comment regarding Greg Brown's awesome watch movement model :-)
Danny Tasmakis about 13 years ago
Oops! You're right Simon my apologies to Greg Brown it is his model.
Danny Tasmakis about 13 years ago
Did some more research on the Tourby watches and it looks like you can get Skeleton Movements where you can show the insides of the watch, is this what you were after Lou or Grabcad team?
http://tinyurl.com/tourbyskeletal
John Huizingh about 13 years ago
I have exactly the same issue/question as Danny. The nice open faces in the Tourby pictures are all from the backside !! At the front there is not a lot to see. So I was also thinking to open up the front face and making a 'skeleton' face out of the great model of Greg Brown myself. Or can we rotate the mechanism 180 degrees ?? Is that an option.??
james lenane about 13 years ago
I have a question,do we actually have to make the movement or could I make the watch ie casing and everything else and then use a bitmap image of the skeleton workings a finding it very hard to find any models of the workings to see what they look like and for dimensions etc?...James lenane
mark stillman about 13 years ago
do you have a different model format for the download i cant open the catia file?
Danny Tasmakis about 13 years ago
@James and Mark, read through the whole post and you'll get your answers, Cheers.
Ivan Spasić about 13 years ago
@John, i do not think that rotation of mechanism is possible as there is no way you can put clock niddle s oon back side of clock mechanism.. so i do not know if that is oversight from woodchip, that they didn't understand that it is back side of watch on Tourby watches that is transparent or they really want Turby...
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Sorry guys, a bit backed up. STP file of the model is coming tonight. It is also resized to be the same as the desired ETA movement.
Danny,
we are after the skeleton look. so use those if it fits your design. they are all cool if it fits the design though. It would be nice to see front and back...but the front is the front... and needs to be there. You can rotate but the crown will then rotate with it. you can also modify the bridges in the model if you want to do a custom skeleton movement.
James,
You can use bitmap images of movements as we will resize and fit it to other movements later.
Thanks
Lou
teigan about 13 years ago
if you flip the clock mechanism, even if you could attach the needles, they would be spinning counterclockwise. and no, that won't make time go backwards.
Sylvain Gerber about 13 years ago
Just to be sure ... do we need to see the movement on the front side of the watch or only on the back?
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Sylvain,
I would prefer to see it on both sides. As others are doing, you can have windows in the face onto key components of the watch.
All:
I have updated the provided model to be the correct size and it is now a stp file. Also, please tell us what materials you intend to use when you submit a model. Finally, when you submit a model please try to make it manufacturable and it needs to have a crown and buckle that are styleized as well.
Romano Gaspari about 13 years ago
my solidworks doesn't include exotic wood in rendering materials. Does anyone want to make a team? I need this woods to choose the best: flammed maple, quilted maple, spalted maple, honduras mahogany, koa, purpleheart, satin wood, zebrawood, wengè, gaboon ebony, makassar ebony, ziricote and tiger wood. If interested please send me a private message. Thank you
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Romano,
I you don't find what you need just post it with your desired wood choice. might be able to have someone just photoshop the wood in there.
Lou
Romano Gaspari about 13 years ago
Lou, this is my personal style of working... I need renderings during the 3D drawing because every materials and every wood essence need different kind of working to be apprecieted at the best look. I was a luthier for 10 years and have a long experience with inlays and I will be able to partecipate this challenge only with the help of someone. thank you very much for your interesting
Ravichandra J P about 13 years ago
Lou, how about the woodchip logo?
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Ravichandra,
That is in the works. i have been failing at getting that logo for you guys. hopefully i can get it going today. I will let you know when it is posted.

Unique "story" from participants and no logo or story of yourself? Please!!!
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Logo being uploaded by grabcad today guys. sorry for the delays!
Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
Is it allowed to include the logo like that siluette on the front before the W but written out fully like: Woodchip Design, not only the short form?
louie dietz about 13 years ago
Comed,
Yes that is fine.
Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
Thank You.

@louie dietz, I taught you could give us at least a vector format logo, not a simple raster picture.
Alan Baird about 13 years ago
Jura you got the cheek of the devil, remember " the customer is always right " but you are right of course lol
Jura Stok about 13 years ago
...who is the costumer in this case I wonder .... :)

louie dietz about 13 years ago
Jura,
Im sorry, I will try to get you a rastor image tonight. The purpose of the competition is to get creative watch designs to build as limited edition watches. I am the customer, and the watches will be build along with a few other lifestyle products.

Just wondering why there are only renderings among the uploaded entries and no 3d files? Can a design participate in the competition with only renders? Or are the cad files filtered from the submissions?
Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
Well, I uploaded 3d modells to almost all watches. In solidwork
louie dietz about 13 years ago
renders are ok. I need to design for manufacture anyways.
