Overall, we were extremely impressed and pleased with the variety and quantity of designs submitted, and would like to sincerely thank everyone involved. All of the entries showed a strong degree of consideration to the various elements in our design requirements (must appeal to children, must protect from dust, debris, etc). Ultimately, those that won were able to take these considerations and apply them to a model that could be easily and reliably printed using a Makerbot Replicator machine, which is a challenging task on its own.

We’re happy to announce Anthony as the winner of the 3D4D Glasses competition. His design makes effective use of the 3D printing technology currently used by Dreambox Emergence, allowing reliable prints. The glasses themselves have a fortified hinge area, using a pin system (in this case, pins won out over snap-in hinges due to significantly improved printability and reliability - this will be taken into account for production).
This design featured a unique and very effective approach to lens fitting involving a snap-together frame and arm system, allowing easy insertion and removal of lenses.
This design uses a ball and socket type joint, another unique approach to 3D printable hinges that require no extra components. The frame is also very sturdy, and performed well in stress tests.
This design incorporates a customizable, creative element to distribution of these glasses, which we’re excited to run by the children in Nebaj.

Both of Mathieu’s designs incorporate another effective approach to snap-in arms and easy, fast-printing frames.
Thanks once again for all submissions - we can’t wait to get these fit and start working on prototypes!
