Show off your skills and solve real design problems
It's pretty amazing to see your work featured, whether it is on the Popular feed, by another GrabCADr, or GrabCAD blog. Now's your chance to see your work on the GrabCAD homepage!
Our members are the best engineers and designers out there. We have seen some breathtaking renderings and think there is no one better to show what GrabCAD represents!
Submit renderings of your work to get featured on GrabCAD and claim a Star Engineer badge. Keep things purely mechanical and engineering focused. We want serious, hardcore engineering models that have moving parts or multiple components. No weapons, no brands, and no toys.
Since this is all about what you can do, please use your own CAD models. Include three version of your work: wireframe, non-photo realistic, and photo realistic. There will be a winner for each category and one GrabCADr will win for showing expertise in all three.
Use your own CAD model. If it's already posted on GrabCAD, upload a new version for this Challenge.
Include original CAD models and three renderings in PNG format (same angle and transparent background).
- Wireframe
- Non-photorealistic
- Photorealistic
No brands, no weapons, no toys! Use hardcore engineering models with multiple components or moving parts.
Challenge is open to everyone.
You can submit several entries. Team entries are discouraged. As we said, this is all about what you can do! In case of team win, prize will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members.
All entries must be submitted publicly and become the intellectual property (IP) of the Challenge sponsor. Any private submissions will be made public at the Challenge deadline.
Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD through the "submit entry" button on this Challenge page will be considered an entry.
By entering this competition, you
1. Warrant that the work is your original work.
2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.
Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.
Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements. This Challenge starts on September 16, 2013 and ends on September 23, 2013 (11:59pm UTC). It is a quick one, so start now! Winners will be announced by Oct 23, 2013. Winners can only win one prize per Challenge.

The whole GrabCAD Team is going to weigh in one this one! Our designer, Mikk Olli, will lead us in all that is visually pleasing while our MechEs will help pick out which models deserve the "hardcore engineering" title.
We are an Open Engineering platform that helps engineers design better products. Our Community is the best place for engineers to be online and we continue to build the tools they want.

If the background isn't transparent then it is hard to use it in different styles. for example currently our index page has red background, if you have green color behind your rendering then it isn't easy to use it there.
About the 3 different renderings: they should be on the same angle so that we could overlap them and play around with different solutions.

Hello, About The transparent, i think they want us only to make a Model without background, it's easier to do it even if oyu have the back ground if your software doesn't support the transparency, " couche Alpha " you can go to photoshop,
1- open a new file choose your image
2- Select Loop selection,
3 click on the background ( it sohuld be with the same color, best one to do that is a green backgound)
4- go to selection option, and make it litlle smooth,
5- inverted so that you select only your Model, and make it as you want but don't forget Most Important is to Export it as a PNG picture because jpeg, or others it doesn't support the transparency,
for any more clarification, or help don't hesitate to ask me :)
Good luck, and for Mikk Olli, i think no you don't have to take it from the same angle whatever angle you choose the important is the 3 styles to have in your model,
Good luck,

Thanks @AIT!
...
That's correct. I have updated the Requirements to show that renderings should have a transparent background and that they should all be at the same angle. @Mikk.Olli is our designer and is the one who will be using these renderings on GrabCAD :)

About this requierment
Use your own CAD modelv i think it will be great if we could download a model an render it because mybe a lot of peoples have a good skills at rendering, but not a great models, so that we can use GRABCAD to get our model to render it, but with the rule to Credit the Creator, Thank you,

What do you mean by transparent background?
Danny Tasmakis over 10 years ago
@ BENRABAH GC require 3 different renderings of the exact same view one to be photorealistic one non-photorealistic(Cad view) and one in wireframe.
thinkin3D over 10 years ago
How will this be judged?
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
I have no idea how to render wireframe and non-photorealistic with transparent background in Solidworks. I do know that these can be done easily with the upcoming Keyshot 4.2 =) Shall we postpone this challenge till it releases?
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
@Mikk Olli what's your image ratio preference? 1:1? 3:2? 4:3? 16:9? 22:9? We can come out all sort of funny ratios and might just get penalized, just because it doesn't suit your need. So much appreciated if you tell us what size and shape you are looking for. Thanks.
Arian Shamil over 10 years ago
Can we use a neutral (as white or gray) background or it must be "transparent"?
Mikk Olli over 10 years ago
@Tan Wei Kok 4:3 is good standard size for images, but you don't get disqualified if you use any other size. We are looking for some cool renderings to illustrate mechanical engineering and grabcad. Look at our current index page and think what image should be there so when you come to grabcad first time you understand what it is about.
@Arian If it is easier model then i might be able to cut the background out manually but that's a lot of work. it's so much easier to work with transparent images. I don't know much about rendering but i think you need to remove the environment and save as PNG file which has alpha channels built in. See if this article helps http://www.javelin-tech.com/blog/2013/05/transparent-background-render/

@thinkin3D We want serious, hardcore engineering model renderings that have moving parts or multiple components for our homepage. Just to remind the group, for this Challenge, we prefer that you use your own CAD models.

@ Mikk Olli: Thanks for the answer :)
Arian Shamil over 10 years ago
@ Sara Sigel: Ok...i'll use my own cad models but they're not a lot complex....hope it will be good anyway...we can use any kind of program to render them, right? I means....we are not forced to use some cad but we can also use a dedicated rendering program like Keyshot? Thanks in advance..

there is a tutorial model.if i do everything from scratch based on that tutorial can i upload that?
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
@Arian Wonderful, we'd love to see your models! Use any rendering software you like as long as the exported file is a PNG.
@Benrabah Once you add the three renderings we ask for (wireframe, non-photorealistic, photorealistic), then you can add any ones you think look awesome.
@gurudath Yes, that works! Be sure to link to the Tutorial that helped you build your model in the model's description.

Ok Sara....i've just uploaded a project and i did some rendering.....i exported them in PNG with transaparent background...could you tell me if that layout is ok? Thanks in advance

Cool @Arian I'm really liking the exploded view. I'm going to add a prize for the best exploded view rendering set submitted!
