GrabCAD Office Mobile Meeting Room

Medium

GrabCAD team is about to move into our new office and is looking for ideas how to build a small mobile meeting room for 4-5 people. We prefer something cool and inventive instead of plain walls. The winning designer will be awarded and the meeting room called by the author's name.

We do not want to set any limitations for the shape or looks of the meeting room. The approach you should take is that the meeting room should be made in a way that it could be assembled, moved around if necessary (e.g. if we decided to move office, we'd like to take the mobile meeting room with us).

The more simple it is, the better, preferably made of easily available materials and profiles like glass, wood, plywood, mdf etc. Anything that needs expensive treatment or handling should be avoided as our budget is limited.

The mobile meeting room should have the following features:
- accommodate 4 people sitting, benches could be integrated but it is not mandatory
- the side where to step into the room should be facing south in order to have natural light coming in (we have big doors and windows for the south wall)
- sound blocking design, the meeting room can have its own roof
- one side/part of the meeting room box should have integrated bookshelf on the outer side (we have a lot of books in our office)
- four walls is not a requirement as the corner location can be used, your design can have 2-3 movable walls instead

Nice to have features:
- it would be great to be able to flap the table inside into used/not used position
- a wall or two could be left open to allow more open working space, it does not have to be strictly closed box by design
- some elements can be installed on to the walls, but we prefer to have a standalone design

All artistic design elements like match of colors, pictures, graffitis, etc are more than welcome. The color scheme of our other furniture is blackish grey, white, black, GrabCAD red. The walls surrounding the meeting room can be repainted for effect (currently stone blocks). See the floor plan drawing to get an idea where the meeting room will be situated. Our boring option is to install seams and a thick curtain to separate the table and chairs.

The attached pictures should give a general idea of the interior.

Thumb Thumb Thumb Thumb

Requirements

  • Floor area dimensions where the meeting room should fit are 3000x3400mm. See also the floor plan drawing

  • Accommodate 4-5 people sitting around table

  • Book shelves on the outside of one wall

  • Walls need to be sound proof

  • Should have natural light inside

I like specially the idea, guys 8))
I´ve been making walls in wood for offices a long time and really i like design (and make in finished wood) this work's time.
I hope a lot of designs are here upload in a bit of time made for all my colleagues too!!!
It´s an excellent way to fortget the issue with the taps at least ! ;)
Congratulations for the idea and "let´s go to design it" !!! ;)

Also, Should the room be completely enclosed. You say 4 walls are not required, but you would like it to be soundproof.

I would like to do this design... many other good questions to ask... the 4 walls in good.. How mobile do you want this... considering for trade shows? or other outside events?.. or just for other needs?..

You mention that you would like to be able to take it with you should you decide to move offices. From the plan view you have posted it appears that there is a double and single door on the south wall, what are the dimensions of those doors so we can design pieces that will fit through there.

Guys, I'll go and measure all missing heights tomorrow afternoon! So keep any specific numeric questions coming.

Daniel, it doesn't have to be completely enclosed if there are materials used that block most of the sound. The reason we do not want to build real walls is that it would require to rearrange all the air conditioning systems etc. So if the meeting room wont't have its own ceiling, yet walls that are lower than the office ceiling, consider materials that would block sound the best (cork? thick fabric?)

Ken, probably not trade shows, but we'd like to show it off in our office as an example of the brilliance of the engineering work of GC community. It will be for our own need, smaller brainstorming sessions and meeting with partners.

Zach, yes, it should be possible to assemble and unassemble the room. We will have it custom made, likely in a small wood/glasswork/custom made furniture firm, so the parts and details of the room should be transportable :) As said, I'll go and measure the dimensions of the door tomorrow as well.

One more question. Is this for the US or Estonian office? The reason I ask is because I know the standard framing lumber here is a 2x4 that actually measures 1.5"x3.5" (38mmx89mm). Is the same true for Europe? If it's to be built in Europe I want to make sure I'm not designing it with lumber that will be more expensive! :)

It is for our Estonian office. Standard dimensions are 50x50, 50x100, 50x150, 50x200, 25x100, 25x125, 25x150, 32x100, 32x125, 32x150.... Feel free to use whatever, as we can adjust it later according whats available.

I can still see this as a display project... that can break down very well. using cams locks for assembly fastners. The trade show industry show many applications of this type for the exact same function, but on a trade show site... very transportable and every office will be different.. and there may be times you want to be able to change the configuration to suite the needs. I also see that this could be built by trade show business or similar. The walls can be hollow to hold insulation material and the interior should have sound baffles to capture incoming and outgoing sound... can also show doubl
e glass windows.. this way you can use an open roof design or gridded frame to hold any light fixture.... I will have to show a complete sketch.... again... cams locks to assemble...

To add to this design project. I believe that all design concepts should be considered. many of the project here are not realistic....many functional issues are not addressesed and many if not all have not been thouroghly thought out... or with any expertise in the area. So, I will not submit models this way...this is not the process of Any design firm, inventors office, you need to consider many desing concepts that are still in sketch form... that means ., pen & paper.... ok ..color pencils too.... my time is too vauable to invest in creating 3-D models that take time.. much time... ideas come first,,, they flow like water.... get them on paper first..... consider this?

    Some more measurements:
The doors at the south are 1.80m wide, so anything narrower can be transported in from there. The height of the door is 2.78m.

The height of the room is 3.60m, but the lamps, ventilation pipes etc are a bit lower, so 2.90m is the actual height under which the meeting room should fit.

Neil, the room can have its own floor but it's not mandatory. E.g there can be designs that have lifted floors (see the photo example at the top of the challenge page), but designs with walls only are also fine.

The office floor is concrete, floor heating underneath, so drilling the floor in order to attach the walls is something that should be avoided.

    Ken Perez,

I can understand your comment, but this is a CAD forum not a design forum. The whole point is to share CAD models...

If this site turns to a hand made sketch forum where everyone is free to upload hand made sketches, I will be the first one closing my account.

    Hope Iam not beeing rude...

I understand what you are sauing.. then... that is why you are getting a lot of bad designs.. that have not been thought out... and If you think that hand sketches are NOT part of even CAD design process.. ... then maybe its time for me to leave this place.... hand sketching will Always be a part of any process.. then you get into CAD... if you were not trainned in drafting disciplines, which is OLD school... method,, it all still applys,,, Oranization of thoughts on paper.,,, then draw CAD.... ask any experienced designer..... if you have the time to do them... then go ahead and start modeling ,,, believe me ...it shows..... thank you for your comment.

    Driton Zabelaj,
...are you here for the free CAD models or the experince from others of how they created the CAD models, ideas and the process.. a true designer wants to see the path of technic as well as the finished model. Almost anyone can push a button and use the software of choice, but to understand the whole concept... CAD it just a tool of presenting information. In the fast pased real world, time is money, ...it becomes a judgement call , to hand sketch first and or just start drawing. I remember the day when...all CAD cousre of any type have prerequistes inorder to get into Autocad ,or related. Today...most are self taught, or no proir class study is required. ..Like I said before...it shows in the work that is produce...

Ken you should be posting these concerns ove in the Qand A section I would think. But to address them I would say that from the contests that I have seen all they are asking for and getting are "sketches" of designs/ideas in the form of 3D models, that they turn over to their engineers to finish up to real world specs. Some are very professional and need little work others are not and need allot of reworking, but many are "out of the box" ideas and that is what I think they are looking for. Just my opinion.

In regards to a mobile meeting room, is a module system more the requested style ? Now this is my idea . .and no one better take it: I'm thinking a 1960's Airstream trailer, with a skylight, gutted and replaced with a well designed interior. If it was brought into a building, a small place in the front (patio) could be used as a sitting area. I would incorporate a 60" flat screen to be viewed from the outside, and a smaller one inside . . .Basicly incorporating some of the older 60's strong engineering with the best of todays electronics. I would also incorporate a 3D Printer into the configuration, for sales of GrabCad files (smaller scale) at the events where the mobile unit will be.

So people get better knowledge how their model was recieved by the jury, otherwise its hard to learn from mistakes made in old models.
