Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Bringing CAD to color and color to CAD.
No more black and white renderings, tone down the grey and stop playing it safe! In support of the theme for this year's Industrial Designers Society of America IDSA’s 2013 Northeast District Design Conference, The Color of Design, IDSA is collaborating with GrabCAD, the world's largest online community of designers and engineers, to launch IDSA’s Color of Design "CAD" Rendering Challenge
Simply download any CAD model from the GrabCAD library – then develop it, re-arrange it, cut it, splice it, hack it…but most importantly implement color in a fresh and creative way.
Think about how color affects the design, improves the user experience and brings a 4th dimension to how an object, product, assembly or landscape is perceived. Use this challenge as an outlet for you and your design team to reimagine how we incorporate color into our creative process. Then submit your rendering to the Challenge in JPG format.
Our jury of leading industrial designers, engineers and graphic designers will evaluate and select the best and most creative submissions to be highlighted at the IDSA’s 2013 Northeast District Design Conference "The Color of Design" in April in Hartford.
1st place will be awarded a one complimentary registration for The Color of Design, IDSA’s Northeast District Design Conference, and a full custom spec build from BIKEID. In addition, 1st-4th places will be awarded KeyShot licenses. 1-6th place will receive GrabCAD shirt and mug, not to mention the admiration of your peers!
For a KeyShot trial without watermarked renderings, email license@luxion.com with "IDSA Color Aided Design Challenge" in the subject line. You will receive a 15 day license for use in the challenge.
Thank you to GrabCAD member Mehmet Turkan for the lens model, rendered in KeyShot 4 by Rex Roberts.
Only renderings that are based on CAD models from GrabCAD library are accepted in this Challenge. Only renderings with reference to the original CAD file are accepted. Along with model being from GrabCAD, model must also be rendered in KeyShot.
Along with IDSA logo on rendering, KeyShot logo must be on rendering. Logos are available under 'Specification' button.
This Challenge is open to everyone. You can submit several entries.
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members.
Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD library through this challenge page here will participate in the competition.
Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.
Tag your model with “idsa”. Only entries with valid tag will participate!
Winners will be chosen based on the rules and interpretation and value add of the choice of color and rendering to create a true product differentiation with the choice of color. Quality, realism and composition are also important in the judging criteria.
This Challenge starts on February 25, 2013 and ends on March 25, 2013, at 11:59pm UTC.
The winners will be announced at the IDSA’s 2013 Northeast District Design Conference, The Color of Design on 19th April 2013, as well as on GrabCAD not before April 19, 2013.
The winners will be contacted directly prior the event.
The contest sponsor has the right to promote the winning entries.
Prizes for top 6 entries
Free pass to the 2013 Northeast District Design Conference April 19-20 in Hartford (normally $350) + KeyShot / Animation 1 year license (value $1,495) + custom spec build from BIKEID + GrabCAD shirt and mug
KeyShot / Animation 1 year license (value $1,495) + GrabCAD shirt and mug
GrabCAD shirt and mug
Jury consists of leading industrial designers, engineers and graphic designers around the globe who will evaluate and select the best and most creative submissions for an exhibition at the conference.
Winners will be chosen based on the rules and interpretation and value add of the choice of color and rendering to create a true product differentiation with the choice of color. Quality, realism and composition are also important in the judging criteria.
With its roots reaching back to 1938 and founded in 1965, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is the world’s oldest, largest, member-driven society for industrial design. IDSA represents professionals in product design, interaction design, human factors, ergonomics, design research, design management, universal design and related design fields. At IDSA’s 2013 Northeast District Design Conference, The Color of Design, a fantastic group of featured keynotes and other top-notch presenters will inspire us to explore what is The Color of Design? How does color affect the design, and how is color affected by design? What is its role in the process? How does it differ by design disciplin, and how do we employ color to augment and alter the products, services and experiences we design?
Let’s get together in Hartford April 19-20 for The Color of Design, where we will embark on a two-day deep dive with inspiring speakers, practical workshops and in-depth discussions on the vibrant relationship between design and color.

i've downloaded it, followed all the instructions but i only got a 10 day trial and i still get watermarks on the final render, why?
Tomas over 12 years ago
@Matt Stinson, email the keyshot4-request.txt file to license@luxion.com for approval.
Alexei Kositsin over 12 years ago
Nice!!!
Can i use photoshop to add some effects? as well as logos?
Rendering itself will be done totally in keyshot.
Nemanja Ranković over 12 years ago
When this challenge is over, do we keep those renderings as projects or shall we delete those becouse they are not really our projects, only renderings?
Matt Stinson over 12 years ago
@Tomas i have, then they sent me the .lic and i put it into keyshot but it didnt work
Farzin Raafat over 12 years ago

where can I get IDSA logo?
Aleksei Ponomarev over 12 years ago
Can we use logos of IDSA and KeyShot as etching on the details.
Nemanja Ranković over 12 years ago
Do we have to put those logos as texture or labels on those models or just on the rendered picture?
daniel zientara over 12 years ago
Where is the "specifications button" to find logos?
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
Yeah, I would like to get some more specifics on logo placement as well; like where is the "specifications button" and are there any restrictions on how the logos are incorporated into the image?
Stephen Nyberg over 12 years ago
WOW! some top notch work here. the judges are going to have their work cut out for them on this one.
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
I will look into the specifications button, get what files you need, and get them online as soon as I can. Thanks for letting me know.

Can we use another program to place the logos like photoshop?

...24% and counting... Can't wait to add my entry!
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
Can we get the IDSA logo in same format as KeyShot logo? Or can anyone tell me easy way to clear background?
KeyShot over 12 years ago
You can grab the newest KeyShot logo here KeyShot Logo
For the IDSA logo, in Photoshop, you can create two layers of the logo image, set the bottom layer to 'Multiply' on the Layer options, then use the Magic Wand tool on the top layer to remove the white. Search for a .png of the IDSA logo myself and couldn't find one.
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
I am a mechanical designer and part-time render geek....I don't have Photoshop. Tried using Powerpoint to remove background, which should work in theory, but no luck. If I use the logo I have as a decal will I be able to remove background?
Hevi over 12 years ago
And I'm still waiting for license :/ ...how long it takes to get it? :(
Mariusz Jablonski over 12 years ago
I have a question. If my model has already been used in the competition (iDSA & Keyshot rendering competition), do I also still can report this same model to the challenge?
Tommy Mueller over 12 years ago
I just uploaded the IDSA logo in a large transparent PNG file. You can download it here: http://grabcad.com/library/living-life-by-the-sh-t/files/IDSA-logo-large.png
I can make it larger should anybody really need
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
Thanks Tommy!
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
Hey German, I think it might be due to the fact that they are co-sponsoring the challenge ;)
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
I have updated the specifications to include the IDSA logo that @Tommy Mueller volunteered. Thanks!
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
@Nemanja When the challenge is over, you could upload your rendering to the original project so it can be with the original model. What do you think?
Josef over 12 years ago
How about post processing in Photoshop? Such as processing light, contrast, colors? How about adding backgrounds?
angel over 12 years ago
can i use my own models to render ?
Harrell Holloway over 12 years ago
Just activated10 day license with watermarks vs.15 day with no watermarks as promised. What's the solution?
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
@mariusz.jablonski and @angel You can use your model to render. Be sure to upload through the submit entry button. You can add it to your existing model after the challenge is complete.
@josef.snabb Only renderings with reference to the original CAD file are accepted. Model must be from GrabCAD library and you must render it in KeyShot.
Aleksei Ponomarev over 12 years ago
Can you send me logos in vector graphic.
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
@Aleksei I'm sorry but we don't have vector graphics available for the logos. You can get the available versions through the "Download specifications" button.
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
If you are waiting on a license or experiencing issues, please contact license@luxion.com. Give 24 hours to receive it and they can help you with any issues as well.
Jerry over 12 years ago
can you use more then one cad model?
KeyShot over 12 years ago
For anyone who hasn't received a KeyShot license, be sure to specify "IDSA Color Aided Design Challenge" in the subject line so you get a full, watermark free license to use. After you receive the license file, do the following:
- Start KeyShot, and click select "Install license file".
- Select the saved license file (keyshot4.lic) and KeyShot 4 is up and running.
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
Should we submit each image as a seperate entry?
Aref A over 12 years ago
@KeyShot I just put in my watermark free trial license request. Check you inbox. Thank you ! :)
Robert Nightingale over 12 years ago
Only 9 days to go with the challenge, entries are looking great. I just wanted to re-emphasize part of the original design brief - "Think about how color affects the design, improves the user experience and brings a 4th dimension to how an object, product, assembly or landscape is perceived. Use this challenge as an outlet for you and your design team to reimagine how we incorporate color into our creative process." Thanks and good luck!

Anyone having trouble with the "realtime render" feature?
Aleksei Ponomarev over 12 years ago
Can we complete Keyshot's render in Photoshop for example?
Tommy Mueller over 12 years ago
355 entries! Wow! I bet it'll break 500 before the challenge due date. It'll be a long day for the judges ;)
Congrats everyone!

Is it allowed to submit private entry? Or just public one? Thankv
Sara Sigel over 12 years ago

The most recent KeyShot entry on my screen says March 20th, and ideas or answers?
jozedwardo over 12 years ago
My entry is not showing up, I tagged the project with IDSA but it does not show up on the page!
Tommy Mueller over 12 years ago
My entry and many others are not showing up on the challenge page still. The challenge page shows the most recent entry of nearly 4 days ago.
Could we please get a word back on the comment feed in regards to this problem, many of us are curious, and the challenge has mere hours left.
Andrew Coyne over 12 years ago
Tommy, my latest entries were not appearing at the top of the list either, so try looking through all the entries, I did and found my latest entries buried way down in the list, your latest entry may there too, the most recent entries do not appear at the top for whatever reason. Hope this helps.
Tommy Mueller over 12 years ago
Right on Andrew, thanks for the word back. As you stated, the entries have been shuffled into the mix. I can stop going crazy now thanks to your assistance.
Kinda screwy, but all smiles now.

Sara Sigel over 12 years ago
Sorry for the delayed response on this issue - your entries are being uploaded but are not shown in consecutive or chronological order. Also please note that there is a delay in the entry count from here on out. You can confirm successful upload by checking here: http://grabcad.com/myfiles. Come to me with any questions!

Tommy Mueller over 12 years ago
Right on Martin! I think the best part for me, was watching all the models here on GrabCAD become more alive, living with more color than ever expected.
It seams all of the talent on GrabCAD (and then some) came out of the "wood-work" to chime in to really make it an amazing event... a challenging, challenge ;)
Hardi Meybaum over 12 years ago
Martin, yes this was a new recorder. We at GrabCAD couldn't be more excited about this.
There will be next rendering challenge for sure.
daniel zientara over 12 years ago
Great entries all around. Very impressive. Good luck everyone!

Uh, I am. I've been staring at my computer wondering what to do now...
For a month it was constantly on my mind; rendering something bright and true, now nothing. Just despair. haha

10 days and counting... ;D
Any predictions?
daniel zientara over 12 years ago
Tons of good entries. Judges have their work cut out for them. Some of the entries are very high quality, ultra realistic renderings, but do not capture a unique or creative use of color. It will be interesting to see how the judges weight all the criteria of the contest.
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago
My money is on any of the renderings that focused on color as a part of overall product function, or any of the renderings by Martin Remiar. He has a great eye for composition and color choice. I agree with Daniel too, not enough focus on the value add of color in some of the renderings.; regardless of how incredibly realistic and high quality some may have been.
Tommy Mueller over 12 years ago
Totally Nate, I agree. In the end, color usage will win in my opinion too. I've taken several look-throughs of all the entries, some are really stunning. I've even picked out 6 possible winners; placing a bet with myself. Some of the ones I think will win were not necessarily the most "Liked" models, so I'm curious/excited how the judges perspective on the entries will play out.
nate arachikavitz over 12 years ago

In no particular order:

Metronome Speaker for B&O
SpaceNavigator (IDSA Rendering Challenge)
Time for color
Eames meets Van Gogh
Colourstone Custom
Honestly, these are just a few of my favorites that I feel do an exceptional job of using color to add value. I could easily list a dozen more that I feel have a good chance of winning. So many great entries; so much talent in the GrabCad community!

Congrats to you all ;) You all did so well!!!

nate arachikavitz about 12 years ago
Congrats to all of the winners! I must admit that I clearly misunderstood the criteria of this challenge. There is no doubt that some beautiful and very realistic renderings were chosen as winners; I am, however, curious to see some comments from the judges on how they came to their decision.
nate arachikavitz about 12 years ago
Good job with your pics Tommy! You sure you didn't have some intel? ;)
And I would also like to add that both Abed and Tomas have been an inspiration to me since I first picked up the Keyshot/Hypershot "paintbrush" a few years ago. Not suprising that they are both in the top 6...
