Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Design and model a crazy new accessory for the brand new iPhone 5 and win big.
From cases to docks to integrated keyboards, we're judging submissions based on two factors:
1. How creative is your idea? Does anything like it exist? (hint: we hope not!)
2. How easy is your design to manufacture?
The iPhone 5, touted by Apple as the "thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever," provides a massive opportunity for you to rethink how people interact with their smartphones. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
TO GET YOU STARTED:
Dimensioned iPhone 5 for Case Design (STEP, STL and Solidworks formats- Thanks Bryan Morris!)
iPhone 5 for case designers (IGS format- Thanks Simon Kwan!)
Both of these designs are based on the official Apple iPhone 5 specifications: https://developer.apple.com/resources/cases/dimensions/iPhone-5-dimensions.pdf
This also may help: https://developer.apple.com/resources/cases/Case-Design-Guidelines.pdf
Note: Images below are just to get you started brainstorming! Get creative!
Great renderings are a plus!
We'd also love it if a few renderings incorporate the GrabCAD logo (GrabCAD logo PDF) or our mascot, The Mighty Grabby!
Challenge is open to everyone
Team/Company entries are welcome
You can submit several designs
Only models uploaded through this challenge will participate in the challenge
Tag your model "iPhone5"
Please upload an STL file format in addition to native formats
$1,000 cash + GrabCAD T-shirts!
$500 + GrabCAD T-shirt
$100 + GrabCAD T-Shirt

Love to see you jumping in @Ashish. Can't wait to see all the entries on this one!
Ármin Fendrik over 11 years ago
So... I have one question: is it allowed to include other companys products as part of the entry? Like speakers, etc, or only the iPhone? And if yes, what is the maximum price of the product?
Vaibhav Bhujbal over 11 years ago
Ohhh another super duper challenge
teigan over 11 years ago
the world needs an iPhone accessory that can disguise the fact that the owner is a gullible fashion victim worthy only of pity.
Gabe Blanchet over 11 years ago
@Comed, you may include other established products in your design, so long as you do not intrude on their Intellectual Property; Use your best judgement. Price point is flexible, especially for the "most creative" prize.
RickyMon over 11 years ago
is there any cad object to download with exact measures?
William over 11 years ago
You can find it here Ricky - Dimensioned iPhone 5 for Case Design
CJ Abraham over 11 years ago
If any one here would like photo rendering of their accessory, I would be happy to help out. I've already created a model of the iPhone 5 for both rendering and case designing.

Can any one tell me the exact dimension for the corner radius on the iPhone 5 outside profile? This dimension is missing from Apples PDF or I am blind.
Ravichandra J P over 11 years ago
@ trey haney , Even i dint find it in the pdf.... So found it in Dimensioned iPhone 5 for Case Design.... Check out.
trey haney over 11 years ago
I have that file downloaded. I was curious where he got the dimension and how accurate it is.
Ravichandra J P over 11 years ago
@ trey, Even he just 'believes'..... he says in his comment on the file.... but cant say about accuracy!
trey haney over 11 years ago
Thanks. Hopefully I find time to look at file tomorrow. This the same issue with the other IPhone pdf's.

Nathan Munoz over 11 years ago
I think I am having the same problem as Hessing. I uploaded my model, but it has shown up. How can I fix this?
Nils Aksnes over 11 years ago

Arnaud over 11 years ago
i got the uploading problem too... :)
Julius Siador over 11 years ago
I think the uploading will be completed only if you click OK at the finish of the uploading bar indicator.
Kaspar Kiis over 11 years ago
We will not miss off any of the entries. Please take another look at http://grabcad.com/challenges/iphone-5-accessory-design-challenge/entries and send me an e-mail to kaspar@grabcad,com if it is not listed.

Please take notice that the iPhone 5 model that Bryan Morris has provided needs to be modified accordingly...
1. The vertical location of the "Ringer Switch" needs to be relocated. (it was not defined and is lower than it should be)
2. Although, it is extremely minor... the volume buttons are not vertically aligned with eachother. One is defined and the other is not.
I discovered this problem when trying out one of my designs i had 3D printed. Other than these 2 small issues, the model is extremely accurate!
Thanks

I hope you don't wanna hold a cellphone closer to guitars humbucker pickups!
teigan over 11 years ago
why would a guitarist of even moderate skill level want to block off parts of the instrument that could be used for fingering? and to make things worse they are proposing hanging a telephone there to show you how to finger your chords. the entire world seems to be structured for amateurs, and grabcad is no exception. if there ever comes a motorcycle accessory challenge, the winning entry will be training wheels for recreational riders.
JF Brandon over 11 years ago
Dear Teigan, if you look closely at the design, it sits on your strap stretching in a different direction, away from, not over, the strings (as you instantly, and wrongly, suspected). If you've ever seen, or played a guitar, you know that the strap goes from the strapbutton on the top part of the guitar, across the shoulder and back to the rear of the guitar. The iRig case sits on the strap between the shoulder and the guitar, still within visibility of the player yet out of the way.....I play guitar lots, and as anyone else who's played one, it's a pretty useful idea. I can draw you a picture if you need further explaination.
teigan over 11 years ago
i play guitar too, and don't look at strap when i am playing. nor do i look at the strings. if you are still looking at the strings, then that's what's keeping you from being a guitarist.
JF Brandon over 11 years ago
What if you're learning? You have to start somewhere ... this helps people. And for lyrics, it could be really useful too.
William over 11 years ago
Woooow @ that crazy comment Teigan ((( the entire world seems to be structured for amateurs ))) totally in disbelieve that someone would even consider a comment like that.... IT WOULD HELP IF YOU DID NOT WALK AROUND WITH YOUR EYES SHUT AND JUST LOOK @ THE ADVANCEMENTS HUMANS, ENGINEERS/DESIGNERS HAVE GIVING US OVER THE PAST 200 YEARS.
LoL'ss
Angelo over 11 years ago
@teigan. please dont be closed minded. everyone here did the best job they could to the best of their abilities. Some people are beginners both in engineering and in this case guitar playing haha), we all have to start somewhere. Also, every comment you have left on this thread has been negative. we are all friends here, so lets try and make the criticism constructive :)
William over 11 years ago
Great comment
Angelo :P
teigan over 11 years ago
i tell it like it is. and if you can't do that too, then that's proof your "friend"ships here are superficial and shallow.
Angelo over 11 years ago
telling it like it is and being downright ignorant are two separate things all together. i find the positive to comment on and then help to correct anything that may be flawed or negative. its called ethics. being insulting and negative is never the right route to take. i could find flaws in any of the designs entered im sure, but calling the person out on how stupid an idea is, or criticizing other users is simply "e-bullying". That is simply not welcome here, in my opinion, and any one of the grad cad staff can feel free to correct me if i am wrong.
JF Brandon over 11 years ago
Alright, alright chill out everyone. No more snarky comments or personal insults. This is a comments page for a iPhone Case Design Challenge, not a mudfight.
John B over 11 years ago
we had a mudfight and I missed it O.o... damn...
anyway congrats to the winners! :D
