Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Create a cool, new wireless charging case or accessory for the Nokia Lumia 820 cell phone.
Nokia designs, manufactures and sells mobile phones throughout the world. What if the World could design something for Nokia? The aim of this Design Challenge is to invite GrabCADrs to develop an accessory that matches the wireless charging designs found here.
Nokia has been pushing for wireless charging as an inbuilt function on all of their phones. What designs can you develop for their charging products? What would you like millions of Nokia Lumia 820 users have a chance to see and buy?
Many people would love to have a Qwerty keyboard - can you integrate their Qi Wireless charging system in this case? How about a waterproof 820 case for listening (and charging) your Lumia while you shower? There are so many ideas, look forward to seeing yours!
Please also take a look at Nokia's Developer WIki for additional information.
Please also read our blog post about Nokia some time ago.
We will NOT be launching the challenge for ONE week so there is enough time for everyone to ask questions, talk with Nokia and GrabCAD and make sure GrabCADrs know what to work on and what Nokia expects.
Based on your questions and feedback we will update the specification and requirements and launch the Challenge on April 24, 2013.
The design has to match current Lumia design style.
This Challenge is open to everyone.
You can submit several entries.
Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD library through this challenge page here will participate in the competition.
Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.
Tag your model with “nokialumia”. Only entries with valid tag will participate!
Winners will be chosen based on the rules and requirements.
By entering this competition, you
1. Warrant that the work is your original work.
2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.
Design can be made in any software as long as STEP or IGES file and rendering is provided.
This Challenge starts on April 24, 2013 and ends on May 23, 2013, at at 11:59pm UTC.
Winners will be announced latest June 23, 2013 on GrabCAD.
One person can only win one prize.
The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature.
Private entries must be shared with carla.eid@nokia.fi, kaspar@grabcad.com and sara@grabcad.com
Private entries will be made public after the end of competition

those were the days when Nokia produced monsters like the 7610, 6600, 3230, n 95, n 90, even n8! now we have WP crap! hardware and build is still same, solid, top notch, number one!! just the software gives me second thoughts............

what exactly are we designing? are we creating the case ( wireless system), or is the case existing and we need to make a design for it (physical appearence) ? or is it entirely different from that and we need to design accessorys other than its case?

Cool challenge, a few questions...
Is the idea we base our design on the wireless charging technology, or can we come up with something entirely seperate from this?
I checked out the bluetooth speakers... can you give any details on how much information can be streamed via bluetooth? Is video possible?
Is it possible to include the idea of an APP that would be included as part of the product?
Can't wait to get started :)

Hi everyone, I'm super excited about this challenge. I was reading an article couple of months ago about Nokias view on 3D printing and now we have a challenge here in GrabCAD - how exciting is this.
The original article is here - http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/01/18/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-lumia-820-and-3d-printing/

We have focused the design brief based on your feedback and recommendations, thank you! Think Lumia 820. Think something that ties into wireless charging. We will be uploading the CAD files for you to use soon. Keep an eye out!
teigan almost 11 years ago
i think what is confusing everyone is the term "case". they are thinking in terms of the retarded apple convention of selling a phone that requires the customer to purchase an additional protective case because their phone is so dysfunctionally fragile that even light usage will damage the surfaces. non-apple phones are less demanding on customers and purchasing a case is truly optional. when nokia talks of a "case", they are referring to the outer shell of the phone, which of course comes with and is an integrated essential part of the phone itself.
Anil almost 11 years ago

Ethan Bella almost 11 years ago
Im pretty confused by the description of this competition. Is the goal to create a case for the phone and also a design for the wireless charging pad, or is it something else. It looks like it is asking for a case that permits wireless charging for the phone but I dont see how that is necessary being that wireless charging is built into the phone alredy. Any clarification?

Dragan Beljan over 10 years ago
I agree with you Tomasz. Fairest thing would be that the Nokia Lumia 820 gives all competitors. It is not a specific cost for such a large company.
And each of these works can be used for the benefit of the companyv
jamie over 10 years ago
some very sore loosers commenting here. Grabcad offers people the chance to win some small prizes donated by large companies - no one forces anyone to take part and therefore you should be grateful to be given the opportunity to showcase your work -FREE of charge.
teigan over 10 years ago
hilarious results. better sell off my remaining nokia stock before it's too late.
jamie over 10 years ago
The difference between your design and the winners, Tomasz - is that the winners looked alot better. More thought had been put in to presentation as well as design. This time you were just unlucky, and im sure your not the only person in the entire world to dream up a concept of creating a better camera lense for a mobile phone. Good luck in future competitions. This is all just a bit of fun.
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
I am very sorry to hear about the response from everyone on the choices!
If you feel a finalist is a copy of another entry please contact me at sara@grabcad.com and we will work with the Nokia team to better meet your expectations.
This is all about rewarding the best entries and we won't settle for less for our Community! This week we will reevaluate, so send your feedback to me as soon as you can (if you've already posted I'd love to hear more details in an email from you.)

I agree with you Santiago Ti the table is for IKEA not NOKIA ;) and i am sure that it would look nice in my bedroom but i really can't imagine NOKIA selling the phone and selling the table as the phone accessory :)))))))

I hope Samsung and IKEA would make their challenges here also so I may showcase my ideas (and of Jamie's too) free of charge ;)
Julius Siador over 10 years ago
I've appreciated your keen observation, Santiago. I can't help but recalled Philips' HUE lighting system featured in Apple stores as their iphone and ipad accessory:
http://www.newscenter.philips.com/main/standard/news/press/2012/20121029-Introducing-Philips-hue.wpd#.UdLxPazi6Rv
So, you're right, Branko: What's left is an IKEA innovation for anyone like me who haven't yet encountered a lighting furniture designed like that. ;)
Julius Siador over 10 years ago
N-Gage handheld Game System and Nokia Lumia 820 GamePad Flip Case are my choice for 1st- and 2nd-place respectively. I just can't understand how some entries entered as finalist being sloppily designed if compared to their non-finalist counterparts, i.e. in the camera-accessory category. Perhaps some jury never looked closely (or haven't yet figured out how to view) the CAD models with the powerful and most intuitive GrabCad 3D viewer;) Otherwise this should have been a showcase of game controllers dominating the field of finalists :D
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
Nokia listed down 2 key areas and 1 requirement:
1) What designs can you develop for their charging products?
2) Can you integrate their Qi Wireless charging system?
3) The design has to match CURRENT Lumia design style (requirement)
I found this sentence highlighted Nokia's intention for sponsoring this challenge "Nokia has been pushing for wireless charging as an inbuilt function on all of their phones". It clearly stated again that Nokia wants wireless charging solution, so it should be the primary criteria, the others are secondary. Ask yourself whether your design followed the above criteria and requirements before pointing fingers on others.
On why some designs are selected and some are not, we just have to believe in the judging panel decision and move on. Making a scene here will be unhealthy for this community nor it is helpful for your career. It might even turn away potential challenge sponsors and employers.
As for future challenges, don't wait or tell GrabCAD what to do. Help them spread the words and benefits about crowd sourcing in design if you have connections. Since my entry to Lite Plus challenge, I had so far get local BlackBerry and Sony interested; hoping they will feedback this site to their HQs, so that we can get more challenges on GrabCAD. If all 250k of us do our part, I probably start having nightmares about challenges.
Thanks
jamie over 10 years ago
@Tan Wei Kok - well said, the best comment posted on here.
Julius Siador over 10 years ago
Jamie and Tan, in this imperfect world, expect some valid comments from sore losers, then move on. We're in a technological age already and moved long time ago from Dark Ages when critics were repressed. Such outcry you've seen here are one indicator that this maturing community is very active and making their presence felt. In retrospect, some critics here can even justify the sentiments of some panel or individuals in the jury as the selection of finalists from such vast entries cannot be unanimous to the jurors--well, there is still a statistical probability I could be wrong ;)
These critics here are not a nonsense grumbling bunch such as that featured in the parable of harvest workers in the Bible. These are unpaid individuals with their own sense of IP rights. As human, we all have our personal appreciation of events and the jury cannot exclude themselves from the scene.
Personally, I believe I'm among the few who never cared of losing their IP to challenges such as this. I don't care if I win or lose because the right of being in the challenge is an experience worthy enough for me. Also, I don't even bother to pull out my designs or withheld them from public view if it is truly revolutionary or somehow a disruptive innovation. I even contemplate on improving my non-winning public entries further and sharing them. Moreover, it's a personal shame for my part to pull out some highlights in my entry if ever I will be counted as one of the finalist for the lame reason that companies might copy my design without due acknowledgement--its a public entry anyway.
I encourage anyone to share their IP and put their trust in their creative powers and let go of their creations for the good of the GrabCad community. We are definitely a bunch of inexhaustibly creative brothers around here! Let our presence be felt!

BTW I know great minds think alike and more than one can come to the same conclusion, but as much as my position was a bit overdrawn, it served its goal.
GrabCAD needs a forum.
zalb over 10 years ago
It's useless to comment and be angry... I have already stopped thinking about it. I rather took some time and modified my Lumia 710 for wireless charging. There is no such CAD software that could do it better than me with some tools and my hands. Looks fantastic and works fantastic.
If you have an very perspective idea that could bring you millions, you just don't share it in public, but patent it. That's all.
Have a nice day everyone!
jamie over 10 years ago
when are we going to find out the results in placement order?
Tan Wei Kok over 10 years ago
Is there a need for placement order since all are getting the same prize? Everyone is already a winner =) How I wish Nokia include a job offer as prize :p
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
The final results have been posted! We apologize for taking so long after the initial announcement of the finalists, as we wanted to incorporate your feedback and make sure we placed the entries based on the main goals of incorporating wireless charging in an inventive way and matching the Nokia Lumia brand's look and feel. We hope that you see this in the results and will congratulate all the winners, honorable mentions, and participants.
