Hey there community members & challenge entrants!!!
For the next 27 days, I'm yours :)
If you need a 3D model or knowledge of personal vaporizers to get started, here are some great links to get you in the mindset:
Rock Vapor Challenge Sample
joyetech EGO Electric cigarette
Alternative to smoking, e-cig system

Outside of that, feel free to ask questions to me, or any of the members of the jury.
Looking forward to your entries!

It is so cool that I see Tommy Mueller is here as a jury :)
Matthieu Lemaître almost 10 years ago
sorry i won't participate to this challenge because i think that e-cig are mostly made to make more and younger childrens adicted to nicotine
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Thanks for your point of view Matthieu Lemaître While there are pros & cons to e-cigs and personal vaporizers, this is probably not the space to debate it. I will also state, Rock Vapor is aligned with, and always will be for mature adults of legal age.
...
However I would like to add, I'm a fan of the PV for several reasons. Growing up around San Jose, California I watched the sidewalk, city streets, and highways become littered with cigarette butts from smokers over a ten year period. I watched roadside fires start from the daily commuters, from their casual tossing out the window of lit cigarettes. Everywhere you go, an accumulation of cigarette butts.
...
Personal Vaporizers reduce waste, are reusable & recyclable. Just one a many good reasons to convert to PV's from the standard tobacco products.

ALEXANDRE DROT almost 10 years ago
17mm ,are you search an "ego" like or a mod?
Travis Priddy almost 10 years ago
Hi Alexandre, we would like to have a great design in both categories if possible. The desired outcome would be to have a cool ego style PV, and a higher end mod with a similar and related style. The first launch will likely be an ego style PV, depending on the designs we see here.
Jonathan Brazeau almost 10 years ago
Nice client Tom and Sara. Good luck to everyone.
Jonathan Brazeau almost 10 years ago
functional or aesthetic design?
Travis Priddy almost 10 years ago
Hi Jonathan, certainly we need a high functioning unit, but we are not looking to reinvent the PV with this product. I would recommend selecting a higher end but standard range of functionality for ease of manufacturability. This will be our first hardware launch and is geared to give our customers a great, stylish, and recognizable option for vaping our e-liquids. The aesthetics absolutely need to be top notch and should really speak for the brand, quality materials and durability are important.
Jonathan Brazeau almost 10 years ago
"not looking to reinvent the PV" - Good to know. Sounds good Travis, thanks.
paultahar almost 10 years ago
"over-discharge & short-circuit protection, auto power-off, and 10 second cut-off during vaping." according to that, should we design its electrical component too?
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Hello again paultahar These PV features in question are programmed into the circuit board's hardware and modulated by the user by exterior control buttons.
...
No need to design this PC board's layout, but I would make your best effort to include room within your design to accept a power board, buttons, and a possible LED display for said modulation. Make sense? :)

Stoyan Shumkarov almost 10 years ago
Hello, I'd like to ask what type of batteries are used, so that we can check for their dimensions? Also, what should be the dimensions of the display and the liquid container?
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Hi there Stoyan Shumkarov ;)
Great questions
...
In reference to the battery used: Your design will dictate the ratio & scale of the battery we'll be able accommodate for manufacturing a winning entry. There is a plethora of battery sizes, styles, shapes, and power ratings for digital vaporizer batteries, so sourcing a battery to fit the design is likely solution. With some quick research, you should be able to find a form factor to base your design off of, and make a good design choice going forward. With that being said, be sure to include a link to a battery you choose within your entry description.
...
As for the display: Much of the same information mentioned for the battery can be said for the display, and a link from your research & sourcing should be included in your entry's description. I could do a little better here though, and give approximate measurements of a standard digital display tuned for digital vaporizers... so...14.6mm x 7.1mm would be a good aspect ratio for the screen size, but don't let it limit your imagination.
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
You might be on to something there Pavluha :))
Stoyan Shumkarov almost 10 years ago
Thank you Tommy,
Another thing about the battery, can you tell how many volts it will be? To choose its type. And I guess you probably know what the electronic device that works inside the PV will be, can you provide some basic dimensions of it too? Including the container for the liquid. Or if the last also depends on our design, is the some requirement for its volume?
Thanks!
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Sure thing Stoyan Shumkarov
...
The working voltage for a quality digital vaporizer is between 3V-6V, and dependent on your design & creativeness, the battery charge of 600mAh up-to 3500mAh is required. A current trend with digital vaporizers is the "modding" of the battery to create a more significant vaping action.
...
As for the electronics: There may be up to 2 PC boards needed to make a functional & manufacturable design, and it may only need to be 1; all design dependent. So...If it were only one PC board and the entered design is accommodating the PCB layout for a single PC board, a dimension of 40mm x 14mm is the minimum allowance. If it were 2 boards: 30mm x 14mm and 10mm x 14mm is the minimum. HOWEVER, don't let these numbers get in the way of your imagination ;)
...
As for the vial: These reservoirs contain anywhere from 1.5ml up-to 2.5ml of oil; maybe more, maybe less.
Jonathan Brazeau almost 10 years ago
Tom, how stringent are the dimensions? can we go larger than 17x17mm? I want to use a larger battery.

Joshua Scheringer almost 10 years ago
fun challenge :)
Taylor Franklin almost 10 years ago
great to know. it would be great to use a bigger battery with the increase of popularity with battery mods
Cameron Reid almost 10 years ago
Does the 170mm length include the tank? Also are we able to use our own dimensions? I recommend getting away from the cliché long dildo-like vaporizers, sooooooo passé..... Let us try different shapes? Just give us the dimensions of internal components to work around and we can create something different, easier to carry and stylish.
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Absolutely Cameron Reid create something different & stylish. Guidelines are are simply that, and they are by no means the boundary box to your entry. We're hear to create the future of PV's, so rock it!
...
With that said, a large majority of the PV market purchase products in a "pen" shape form factor, and these products are easy to hold & pocketable. Bear in mind the end-user experience and you'll do just fine :)
Cameron Reid almost 10 years ago
Thanks Tommy. I am a PV user so I am well aware of the opportunities in the market.
Taylor Franklin almost 10 years ago
is there a set guideline as whether the vaporizer button is on top of the pv or the bottom, or is this just a preference.
Travis Priddy almost 10 years ago
One tip, we like the idea of the button looking like our logo.
Kris G almost 10 years ago
Hello all, great challenge.
My main concern is the shape of the battery. I want to make something different than the ordinary pen shape but i think the shape of the battery is holding me back...
Are you going to use the batteries on the market or can you make a custom one with a more complex shape? Curved and tapered like shape....
Thank you in advance.
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
A custom battery is most likely out of the "budget", sorry ;/ Christos Georgoulas I can see your point though, with a vast amount of batteries with round form factors; a semi-static design constraint.
...
However, the current variety & availability of batteries should enable some outstanding concepts & manufacturable products as-is.
...
Good ahead and create an entry doing your best to accommodate for the battery variable, then we can work it out online through the comments to provide an adequate solution ;) Sound good?
Kris G almost 10 years ago
Thank you @Tommy Mueller for the tips. That makes things easier.
benjamin almost 10 years ago
Hi I read something about the user being able to set the Ohm, watt, voltage and puff counter... puff counter brings an image in my head, but what exactly happens when you alter the other three? cheers, Benjamin
Tomica Vukovic almost 10 years ago
Dear fellows. As a man who is worked in applications for industrial air cleaning and unfortunately tobbaco user and who is read a many papers about airborne contaminants, this challenge I found from engineering ethics very discutablile.
Making oil mist in a presence of crowd of people in continuity action is very dangerous beacuse aspiring that air, you bring yours lungs in situation as I seen long time before in big cities and what we have now in crovded China cities which you lead to lung deseases which is often hard.
I do not want to be ill !!!
Cameron Reid almost 10 years ago
Hi @Tomica Vukovic. I understand your concerns however you are completely wrong! As an ex-smoker and an educated person, I conducted extensive research into any possible hazards before trying vaping. Although in its relative infancy, any scientific study in relation to vaping has been resoundingly positive. Here is one such study for you to peruse,
http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2458/14/18/
The liquid used Is not oil. There are only four components used to make e-liquid and I recommend you school yourself as to their properties.
I truly believe vaping to be a life saving method of quitting cigarettes and as harmful to health as not smoking at all.
james lenane almost 10 years ago
@Cameron,have to agree with you as been using one for over a year and with out a doubt one of the best devices to be made in a long time but biggest battle at the moment is a lack of education as a lot of people damn it without knowing the facts and there has been a lot of studies done but seemed to be ignored. It's great to see something that was done by the people for the people and gave many people there life back..anyway looking forward to this challenge for sure...vape on=)
james lenane almost 10 years ago
Hi guys will you be sticking with a regulated device or is there an option for a mechanical mod and if so are you looking at a 22mm and only other question is the atty and connections, have you a preference for either..thanks!
Ignasi Sagré almost 10 years ago
am I the only one who thinks we are missing some FEEDBACK from ROCK vapor to evolve our designs in a way they fit better the company needs/whishes? I mean.. maybe i'm wrong.. >.< but the good point about this challenges in communities such as Grabcad, is the chance to interact..
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Hello Ignasi Sagré and @all
...
I'm here to give feedback in every instance appropriate for curving the design; okay I missed a comment or two, but I've responded quite a lot. Rock Vapor team will chime in and have to some degree :) ...and I bet you'll hear more from him and his group in the next two weeks as the challenge nears its end.
...
A quick share how things got started here...
...
This design challenge was created as a result of when Travis from Rock Vapor contacted me for freelance work in 3D. We started a Workbench project initially, but soon realized that there's an opportunity to feature this as a GrabCAD challenge, and this is also why I'm here on the jury and representing Rock Vapor on this challenge ;)
...
I then asked a question on GrabCAD here:
https://grabcad.com/questions/putting-on-a-grabcad-challenge-and-i-need-your-input
...
A few weeks later here we are! In the midst of creating the future of vaporizers! All of the members of the jury here have complete faith in the GrabCAD community to bring the best designs forward, and the RTV team know what they like!
...
Essentially be creative, insightful, and do some research into your own design. The rewards for the top three winners could lead to so many more opportunities including contract work on future designs. Don't let the "numbers" interfere with your innovations; just go for it!
Ignasi Sagré almost 10 years ago
Ohh.. i didn't know that Tommy, i thought you were just representating Grabcad, and i was waiting for some Rock vapor's member input! >.<
Thanks for being so helpful with newbies!
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Hey man, no sweat!
Have fun, but play to win!! ;P
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Great question james lenane Any designs which can adopt to current available clearomizers/atomizers components will provide an adequate cost-effective solution for those entered concepts. There's quite a variety already available and small changes can be made to these standard parts to fit your design intent, if applicable. Also If needed, there are great models here on GrabCAD to gain access to these standard parts, and to adapt for your design.
...
The other solution is creating the "first article" prototype of the new reservoir, and develop the tooling/molds necessary to build in quantities; like with any new technology. This *IS a viable option provided that the winning 3D solution is ready for this phase.
...
Essentially, engineering will be done on an as-needed basis to accommodate the winning Rock Vapor designs; reservoir, battery, electrical, etc. However, entries which have done the ground-level work in design, but also offer manufacturable solutions to make a viable product will trump over all else.
...
In each case the winning entry/ies will be based on Travis's earlier comment, "The desired outcome would be to have a cool ego style PV, and a higher end mod with a similar and related style. The first launch will likely be an ego style PV, depending on the designs we see here."
...
My interpretation of this is... that an innovative new vaporizer has a chance to win the challenge, and an equally cool-looking, adaptable to current technologies, digital vaporizer has a chance to win.
...
Hope it helps!

Hi Cameron. I see the study and one important fact is missing. In area of airborne contaminat, primary value is size of contaminant. If size of it drop below 0.5 microns we take this as very dangerous for human lungs beacuse this kind of particles stay in lung and it is very difficult to go away .
Area of chemistry is so huge that average consumer know nothing of it. It not exist a safe chemical. The best case is asbestos. Originaly it is chemical neutral for human but beacuse a fibers of it is small (less 0.5 microns) they acumulate in lungs over years and after 40 years wwe have campaign to forbide using of asbestos.
If one wish to stop smoking must one morning wake up and deside to stop it, everything else is selfcheating. My father do this (he is smoking 40 years), my few ex coworker do this, but I delay this moment. main trouble with today tobbaco is enormous using of chemical in tobbaco manufacturing.
Effects of using e- cigs we can see for 10 to 20 years.
Edward Otter almost 10 years ago
Great challenge. My only concern is I do not believe we should be making them look 'appealing for the young generation'. Remember, the idea of an e-cig is to help smokers to quit, not have a growing craze with flashy e-cig gizmos. Its very much like cigarette companies having colorful boxes, hence the new sliding doors in large supermarkets to prevent the younger generation seeing them and becoming tempted. Just a point.
I believe morally the e-cig idea is brilliant and has been hugely effective so far, but bringing out multiple flavors and flashy new e-cigs will only entice the non-smokers and children.
Cameron Reid almost 10 years ago
Hi Tomica Vukovic, thanks for that information I find it very interesting and a new angle I am yet to fully explore. Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin have been consumed by humans for quite some time in medicine and baked goods eg doughnuts, cakes etc. I would like to think that any potential carcinogenic material would have been identified by now, but maybe not? With only two other ingredients being nicotine and flavouring I am failing to see any potential harm. However particle build up in the lungs is not an area of expertise for myself. Surely the potential for particle build up in vapour is minimal next to a particle such as asbestos? Either way, as you smoke and I vape, I find it extremely difficult to imagine what you are doing is in any way safer than vaping....?
Sam almost 10 years ago
Is this a phillips morris subsidiary or other of such a place? or started by individuals who left the company and along with others with the technology and money. That are wanting to truly help those who smoke find a better alternative?!
If it is the latter i hope you succeed, and rock on.
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago

Travis Priddy almost 10 years ago
Tommy is spot on, this Challenge has blown my mind! I believe some of these designs have a great shot at hitting the big time in the vapor industry. Keep the great work up, and know that I am watching with great interest. I see a great future for some of you in this line.
Travis Priddy almost 10 years ago
Hi Sam, I worked at Philip Morris for over a decade, and always dreamed of starting my own company. When I left the company in December of last year, I created Rock Vapor Technologies, along with an amazing crew of co-founders including 2 other former Philip Morris employees. We are not in any way affiliated with PM or any other tobacco company. I believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking based on the research out there that I've read, and my vision is to provide an alternative to the millions of smokers out there that can increase their enjoyment and reduce their risk.

Excuse me.....i hav a prob....i designed a model....but at last only I understood that the dimensions I used to do in mm was actually saved in inches....so the size has varied very much....but the proportions are correct....will this be a problem...??
Sara Sigel almost 10 years ago
@Ram I recommend making the changes and uploading a new version. When you upload the file it should give you the option to replace with a new version as long as the filename is the same.
Michael Gilling almost 10 years ago
@Ram what does it matter if it was saved in inches? That's just a unit thing, just change the units in your file. It shouldn't mess with any dimensions that you put down. Only thing i can see being a problem is that mm does not easily convert to in so you might end up with odd looking numbers.

What a great opportunity grab cad is for all of us to upload or designs which is such a useful tool for myself and the like.
However, I find it very disheartening when taking part in a competition when rules are not obeyed and then those that do not comply get through.
"Approximate build dimensions: 170mm x 17mm x 17mm". I just think, do not put this if you are not going to stick to it.
Its just difficult to take part in something where rules ignored by the jury who set them.
Makes the whole process unfair on those who do abide by them.
I think all entries are great and well done to all whom got through!

jamie almost 10 years ago
I dont normally comment after the results have been issued even when i am a finalist. But anyway why not -
Im grateful to be in the top 14 - but due to the comment from the judges it looks like my entry wont be in the top 3. I have to disagree with the comment though as i believe (as a time served engineer in injection mouldings and steel fabrication) that my model is just as easy to manufacture as any of the other designs whether it be made out if plastic / steel or aluminium.
@Edward - i do sympathise with you - i too have been in your position were you stick to the rules and you dont get anything for it and yet you see other designs picked that far out way the guild lines. But i have learnt my lesson through this - i suggest in future you do what i do and take the rules as a pinch of salt and bend the rules. If you still dont win at least you have a design you believe in.
For my top 3 (not in any order) I think these are the best - i have taken the 2 rules / guidelines - "Next Generation appearance"
- "Marketable & cool!"
These were the guidelines i used to create my entry and are what i believe the winning design should mainly be based around.
e-smoke by ignasi.sagre-1
ROCK VAPOR -The KRACKEN by gregory.j.peck-1
SG ROCK by stefan.gales-1
The rest i see as basic vaporizers and too similar to the original. They dont give enough difference to be "Next Generation appearance".
Thanks

@Jamie - I understand how it works now. this comment was not solely aimed at this competition but others over the time I have been a member.
To be fair to the judges on this occasion it did say approximate dimensions, therefore going outside this would not be wrong.
I have taken part in others where there is a definitive rule which is broken.
Again well done to all.
My top three would be:
3) SG ROCK by stefan.gales-1
2)i-Tri Vapor by jamie-75
1)ROCK Vapor M1-,ecig by alexandre.drot-1

Thanks GrabCAD for the opportunity to participate in this challenge. I think the judges picked some great designs for there upcoming product. This is really a great way for a start-up to get access to a pool of iterations at a margin of the cost of traditional product development. Good luck to all the finalists!

Well, there are so many similiar ideas to mine entry in shapes and materials...it looks like there are a lot of "telepathists people" out there :) so I will vote for the trully original designs by look and functionality, my top of finalists starting from most liked by me:
1. SGCHL ROCK
2. Rock-PV-Stylin
3. i-Tri Vapor
4. e-smoke

Hey everyone! I'm traveling right now, but I'll be going around to all the entries that I favorited (there were many) and release my full review on their individual design; coming very soon.
...
I'm also throwing together an animation to recap ALL the challenge entries and their efforts, and of course a focus of our top finalists.
...
Nearly every design entered here in this challenge was a feasible concept. Narrowing down the results was a challenge in itself!
...
More to come!

Thank you for picking my design among the finalist. It is a great honor.
This was one of the best challenges.

The Kracken looks as if my fingers will finally have something to do. I hate the water pipe looking ones, i am always kind of afraid to use it around in public, and if im around a police man forget it they always give me a spooky look. The Kracken though doesnt give off that kind of look or feel, cant wait to get one.

hey Mr Tommy Mueller , how is the full review on the designs going , and where can we find it
Tommy Mueller almost 10 years ago
Heya Kafe ammar! Just waiting for the final results to get posted for this challenge ;) We should be hearing the news soon! Afterwards, I'll be posting notes on the many individual challenge entries. I don't want to "put the cart in front of the horse", as they say.
Also a recap of this challenge (by way of animation) will soon follow the GrabCAD post on the winning final results.
More later!! :)

After clicking the render button in Adobe After Effects...
It looks like a six or seven hour render!
...
Just under six minutes of video but loaded with graphical effects and the entire cast of 89 entries. Worth the wait; hang in there!

jamie almost 10 years ago
I am glad that the results showed the next generation of vaporizers and not something that was just a bit different from the original design. well done to everyone - some great entries.
jamie almost 10 years ago
interesting - what are the issues greg?
Sara Sigel almost 10 years ago
@6a703f68 I'm sending you an email so we can talk through things.
jamie almost 10 years ago
@Sara - quick question regarding the following - 4th - 10th Place
RTV PV or opt for cash value (wholesale price) + GrabCAD multitool.
What is the Wholesale price of an RTV PV. I dont smoke so the PV is pretty useless to me.
Thanks

Cool no points (Travelar), score is outside the range. Positive or negative, that's question? :)
Showing design intent, what does this mean? criteria points are for this?
Sara Sigel almost 10 years ago
@jamie I'll respond via email with details.
@singlefonts Sorry about that, I've fixed your description :D
