AUTO(R) 2012 DESIGN CHALLENGE: CREATE URBAN ELECTRIC MICRO VEHICLE.
The urban mobility market is booming. By 2015 thirty million scooters will be sold annually. People are buying them to move quickly through urban traffic, to park where cars cannot and to save on fuel. At the same time, many commuters avoid purchasing two wheelers because they’re frequently uncomfortable and only drive well in nice weather. This niche is so big that manufacturers are starting to create vehicles just for this demographic. Motorcycle companies are experimenting with larger and more feature-filled motorcycles while automotive companies are shrinking their vehicles. These companies are all fighting for the same consumers.
We challenge you to create the most desirable urban vehicle of them all.

Urban mobility is a hot topic right now, but traffic jams have been around since Babylon. One hundred years ago Peugeot hired Ettore Bugatti, then a young Italian engineer, to create a small car for mobility in Paris. After WWII, the average European could not afford a car, so in the 50s and 60s many budget microcars, nicknamed “bubble cars” emerged. Now, microcars are coming back!
Ground-based vehicle - no flying saucers please
Three or four wheels - but remember that this is a microcar!
Small footprint - easy to move around and easy to park is essential in big city
Single seated or tandem (1+1 or 2 seats) - 90% of commuters ride alone, but people like to have possibility to give someone a ride
Enclosed cabin - nobody wants to get wet or cold. Open vehicles are welcome, so long as they have a roof, either soft or hard
Small boot (trunk) capacity - what do you carry around city? Laptop, sport bag, shopping bags...
Electric vehicle - it just makes sense
Excellent style and design

CCG about 12 years ago
Do we have to use a 3d software or it can be done with pencils and paper....i like the second bether....i like to draw
Kaspar Kiis about 12 years ago
@Ghioca Claudiu. It must be done in 3D software. You can team up with other members that might be able to help you out with the 3D design.

To much work for such a small prize....my oppinion...our designs can be used to make a real city car....they get the money and fame and we get the "motivation". But i will get into the challenge just for exercise.....

Hello all!
I have two quick questions. Me and my friend will enter this competition as a team. I am new to this site so I wonder how we go about doing that. My other question is in what category we will end up. I, the designer has not yet worked in the automotive industry and my modeller teammate is currently working in the industry. What will happen?
Daniel Tomicic about 12 years ago
@FPF We welcome teams, so feel free to work together on this project. Since one of you have experience from automotive industry you'll enter pro category.

how do I add here a car that I already loaded in my profile a while ago, but that fits this contest?
Emil Pop about 12 years ago
Grabcad has serious technical problems, here is the standard message:
Sorry, but something went wrong
We have been notified about this issue and we will take a look at it shortly. Try again in a minute!
This is coming up 20 times a day when pushing the button to upload a model, or to load a review, or the upload button itself after selecting the file to be loaded, or simply trying to see somebody's profile or project.
How can people participate in contests or upload models if the site itself is broken?
joost about 12 years ago
does someone know how to create a B1 format presentation (microsoft publisher doesn't work)
Kaspar Kiis about 12 years ago
The upload problem has now been fixed. Sorry about that and thank you for your patience.

Hello does someone know how to create a B1 format presentation
Stoycho about 12 years ago
Hello!
I think that B1 Presentation is actually a panel with dimensions: 707/1000 mm (portrait format). But I have another question: how do I upload a project for the competition? By e-mail, sending my B1 presentation, or uploading here, on the webpage? What does "Privately uploaded entries" mean? Let's say I want to upload B1 presentation privately... Thanks :)
peterr about 12 years ago
Hi There,
I am wondering in regards to this competition, what is the promotion like in order to further our careers, has anyone been 'discovered' through these types of contests? also do we have any protection over our ideas?
thank you much!
Kaspar Kiis about 12 years ago
@Stycho please upload the B1 format as "Cad file" to our library. Privately uploaded entries mean that your design will be seen only by people you share the CAD file with. For example on this challenge you need to share model with daniel@scuderiazagreb.com and kaspar@grabcad.com
Kaspar Kiis about 12 years ago
@peterr terms and conditions can be found from the following page: http://grabcad.com/challenges/terms
Daniel Tomicic about 12 years ago
@peterr You'd be surprised how many people from automotive industry follow this kind of contests. There are designers who event got employed in this way.
Daniel Tomicic about 12 years ago
@joost For B1 presentation use Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop, Corel Draw or some similar project.
Rasa Ahnkrep about 12 years ago
for this challenge, i would need to submit 1 3D model and 1 2D model in B1 format, is that correct? i learned about this challenge just now, can i make a basic undetailed 3D model and finish up the rest in my 2D?
Kaspar Kiis about 12 years ago
@Rasa yes you can as long as 3D CAD files are attached.
Kaspar Kiis about 12 years ago
Thank you to all the participants. Can everybody please make sure they have their entries listed: http://grabcad.com/challenges/urban-e-v/entries If no, please send me an e-mail to kaspar@grabcad.com
