Velodroom Bike Accessory Challenge

Get creative and submit your dream bike accessory! Velodroom is looking for ideas that match their brand and mission.

Velodroom is a bicycle accessory brand with a unique take on the world of cycling. They focus on smart and inventive solutions like their current light system, which is detailed below.

Create an accessory that solves a problem cyclists face in their daily trek - make practical and intelligent with a dose of Velodroom style (see pictures and video).

The Velodroom bicycle lighting system is designed to address the issues of nighttime and daytime urban bike commuting. It is a one of a kind bicycle light set, with embedded sensors, powered by USB-rechargeable battery. The lights turn on with bike movement and switch off 60 seconds after the bike has stopped. Built in accelerometer analyses the motion of the bicycle and turns on the rear stop light while braking. This possibly saves your life and certainly looks stunning.

We will NOT be accepting entries for the challenge for ONE week so there is enough time to ask questions, talk with Velodroom, and make sure GrabCADrs know what to expect from the jury.

We will accept submissions starting on April 29, 2013 with updated specifications and requirements based on your valuable feedback and questions.

Requirements

  • We are looking for all ideas that you can relate to bicycles, riding and lifestyle of bicycle riders – may it be a new bicycle horn or a laptop bag you can attach to your bike.

  • The design has to match current lighting system design and brand.

  • Solutions CAN use electronics – be creative – our electronics team loves challenges.

  • We are looking for design ideas and concepts, so CAD files are not required. You MUST submit a sketch or rendering and include a description detailing your idea.

  • STEP and IGES files are an added bonus and can help make your idea more tangible.

Rules

  • The competition is open to everyone.

  • You can submit several designs.

  • By entering this competition, you
    1. Warrant that the work is your original work.
    2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
    3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.

  • Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.

  • Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members.

  • Tag your model with “velodroom”. Only entries with valid tag will participate!

  • Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library through this Challenge page will participate in the competition.

  • Winning designs will be chosen based on the rules and requirements.

  • This Challenge starts on April 29, 2013 and ends on May 29, 2013, at at 11:59pm UTC.

  • Winners will be announced latest June 23, 2013 on GrabCAD.

  • One person can only win one prize.

  • All cash prizes awarded through Paypal (http://grabcad.com/faq#money). Void where prohibited.

  • The sum of the Awards is the total gross amount of the reward. The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature.

  • Private entries must be shared with indrekn@gmail.com, andri.laidre@gmail.com, setblaster2@gmail.com, peter@eland.org.uk, kaspar@grabcad.com and sara@grabcad.com

  • Private entries will be made public after the end of competition

The jury will be comprised of cycling enthusiasts, journalists, Velodroom designers, and GrabCAD engineers.

    John, accessories should fit multiple bikes. If you want to use bicycle models in your project feel free to browse GrabCAD library - there are plenty of models to choose from. You can submit your own bicycle ideas too.

    Siddarth, you can submit ideas that use sensors and other electronics. Just describe what the electronics should do and our electronics team will find a solution how to realise it.

    Simonr, it is not possible to buy our lights just yet. The fastest way to get a Velodroom light is to participate in this contest and If your idea ends up in top 4 then we will send you one from our prototype series. Looking forward to see your cool idea!

    Mathieu, during recent years micro-USB is the most commonly used charging port. It's mandated for mobile phones by EU (http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/rtte/chargers/index_en.htm) and even accepted by Apple, providing micro-USB adapters on the EU markets. Additional plus is, that according to standards, micro-USB plugs must survive at minimum 10,000 insertions.

    This happened in the past with another competition - that's the tricky thing waiting for the deadline. Then we got the response the other concepts which were uploaded at last did not enter the jury. Make sure the next time you send it in a day before the deadline.

    Do you know what is the deadline?
    So far, I did not say, because you did not do a problem.
    I can therefore speak only as it is not fair to the other competitors.
    But the previous two challenges, several days later upgraded to entries.
    Before you argue with, please check the date of uploads.
    Anyway, I was looking forward to the new ideas transforming.
