I am using the autodesk vault program, my company is having recurring problems with people shecking things in and out out of turn and it has been the source of a multitude of problems. I will make a complex model and check it into the vault, then another guy will check it out to do a drawing, then my supervisor will check it out to review it, leave it open on his computer all day, then somebody will check it back in, and then somebody else will check back in an older version, and by the time it gets back to me what used to be a perect model now has constraint errors and a mixture of old and new parts. what i would like to do is prevent other users from being aable to check a model out but i want to do it without having to release the file. Any suggestions?
VAULT PRO SHOULD BE ABLE TO CONTROL THIS COMPLETELY (... BUT IT IS EXPENSIVE)
WHAT WE DID (ON VAULT / VAULT COLLABORATION): THE MASTER MODELLER (OR THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR A CERTAIN AREA) CHECK OUT EVERYTHING. THEN OTHER PEOPLE CAN'T CHECK IT OUT. IF THERE IS A COMPONENT THAT THE MASTER MODELLER HAS GOT CHECKED OUT, BUT SOMEONE ELSE NEEDS TO WORK ON IT, HE CAN JUST UNDO CHECKOUT THAT COMPONENT(S). THEN WHEN USERS CHECK IN SOMETHING, THE MASTER MODELLER UPDATES HIS OUT-OF-DATE COMPONENTS AND CHECK THEM OUT TOO.
END OF THE DAY, TO DISABLE THE LOCK, THE MASTER MODELLER "UNDO CHECKOUT" EVERYTHING.
IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO CLEAN UP WORKSPACES. WE RENAME THE WORKSPACE FOLDER EVERY MORNING BY APPENDING THE PREVIOUS DAY'S DATE TO THE FOLDER NAME IN WINDOWS EXPLORER. THEN FETCH ALL THE FILES FROM VAULT AGAIN.
IF SOMETHING IS MISSONG, THE PREVIOUS DAY'S WORK CAN JUST BE COPIED INTO THE CURRENT WORKING FOLDER, CHECKED OUT (WITHOUT OVERWRITING) AND CHECKED IN.
THEN EVERYBODY MUST UPDATE THEIR WORKSPACES AGAIN... IT IS A LOT OF WORK, BUT IT CAN BE DONE.
thank you, i will try that.
