I would start with the tutorials that come with SolidWorks.
When I first started to learn solid works, I tried doing it myself. I found out that what was taking me 3 hours really takes 10 minutes. its hard to teach your self, not that it cant be done. but for a few dollars you can go to school and have someone at all times to ask questions.

Solid works is not something that can be taught by email
Download models and study how others have designed their model
Simple at first then more complicated
Model something you enjoy or understand
