STEP / IGES format
Hello, are STEP and IGES file format different formats? Can I open them with SOLIDWORKS 2020 and SOLIDWORKS 2016?
Thank you for answering me.
Accepted answer

Both STEP and IGES files are considered "exchange" formats that are widely supported across all of the major CAD applications on the market. They are different formats with pros/cons for each. Generally speaking, the IGES format is better for more complex surface geometry which will prevent or minimize import errors. If you want to open a newer SolidWorks file (2020) on an older version (2016), then converting to either STEP or IGES will work well for this. Just keep in mind that you will only be importing a solid body without the feature tree.
