Helix in Fusion360

Creating a helix in Fusion360 using coil command

  1. Step 1: Use Coil command to create a coil

Use the included coil command in Fusion360 to create a coil with the following parameters

    Section - Triangular (Internal)

    Section Position - Outside

You can select the required diameter, height and other parameters such as type or number of revolutions.

This will create a coil with the inner edge of the triangular section being the required helix.

  2. Step 2: Creating 3D geometry

Create a new sketch with any sketch plane.

Use the command 'Include 3D geometry' under Project/Include in the create drop down menu while selecting the inner edge of the coil (as shown in the figure)

This will create a 3D geometry, which is the required helix. This helix will be purple in colour, this means that it is still a projected entity and cannot be used just yet as it is still linked with the coil.

  3. Step 3: Breaking link with the coil

Select the purple helix and look for this link symbol (given below)

Click on this symbol and press delete to remove it and break the link.

The helix will be unlinked and control points would be visible in the helix

Now from the browser tab, under the bodies folder, select the coil body and delete it to get the final helix

As you can see the helix is shifted towards right with a distance equal to its radius. You can move it to the required place using move command (move type - sketch objects)
