Show off your skills and solve real design problems
RedHarbinger challenges you to create unique reservoir cover designs for their high-end, liquid-cooled computers.
Computers are an extension of the work you do. Shouldn't every part look its best and tell the world that you mean business when you sit down to design? RedHarbinger thinks so, and we agree.
You must include:
- STEP or IGES version
- Rendering
You are encouraged to include:
- Native CAD file format
- Model for every tube length option.
- Rendering including every tube length option.
- Detailed description of design
The winning design will:
- Fit within the CAD template.
- Not include logos or text.
- Be unique.
- Be manufacturable.
- Be simple and aesthetic.
- Match the RedHarbinger brand.
Dimensions and details:
- Minimum wall thickness: 1.5mm.
- Lengths of the tube: 100, 200 or 350mm.
- Design can be for any or all lengths (all is preferred.)
- Fewer than 20 closed loop cuts.
- Reservoir covers material: Stainless steel.
- Colors and finishes: Brushed silver or Satin black.
The competition is open to everyone. Multiple entries are acceptable. Team entries are welcome - prize will be transferred to team leader. Participants may only win one prize per Challenge.
Tag your entry with “redharbinger” when uploading to GrabCAD. If you submit through the "Submit entry" button, this should be added automatically. Only entries with valid tag will participate. Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD through the "Submit entry" button on this Challenge page will be considered an entry.
By entering this competition, you
1. Warrant that the work is your original work.
2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited.
3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.

I have a SW 2012 and I can't open the file. Place the STEP file.
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
Our mistake. I'll get that uploaded as soon as possible. Thanks @Branko.
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
The 'Download specification' button should now include 100mm, 200mm, 350mm STEP templates along with SLDPRT file. Have fun!

In the design .... do we have to create end caps and if so is there a spec?
If not ... how is the cover supported at each end?
Scott Bruins over 10 years ago
Hi Doug- You do not have to make the end caps. The cover caps are part of the reservoir and will support the cover. The cover will slide over a 60mm reservoir such as an EK-RES X3 (http://www.ekwb.com/shop/reservoirs-and-acc/reservoirs/ek-res-x3-250.html)

Can we design a part that goes inside the reservoir that pairs with the cover? Or is this strictly a cover only challenge?
James Milliner over 10 years ago
The 20 closed loop rule does that include the logo?
Stephen Nyberg over 10 years ago
The requirements state that our designs should not have any logos, can we use the RedHarbinger logo in the desing?
Matthew Stonebraker over 10 years ago
@James Milliner, I'm not sure that any of the entries thusfar follow the 20 closed loop rule. It may be that if you're careful to obey it, you could be the only eligible entry for winning, haha.
Tommy Mueller over 10 years ago
@Matthew Let's help those entries out then :)
My suggestion is that every entry should count up their "closed loops" and include that info on their entry project page; should help out a lot with discrepancies to the rule
Scott Bruins over 10 years ago
To address some of the questions so far. 1:The contest is for the cover only. 2:You may use the RedHarbinger Logo but no other company logos will be allowed. 3:The 20 closed loop rule does not include the RedHarbinger Logo if you choose to include it in your design. 4. We may change the number of closed loops allowed but the fewer closed loops the better.

I'm under 20... Questions, what about lathe operations? would that count as a cut? Please let me know asap, also, how thick can we get in wall thickness?
Scott Bruins over 10 years ago
Hi Jonathan, No lathe operations will be allowed. Were looking for designs that can be easily cut on a laser. The wall thickness is also set and cannot be changed. Thanks
Ian over 10 years ago
What exactly are you meaning by "closed loops"?
Scott Bruins over 10 years ago
Hi Ian, By "closed loops" we mean enclosed shapes. For example a "0" is a single closed path where "8" is enclosed paths. Make sense?
Ian over 10 years ago
Yes, thank you. Just wanted to make sure I was counting the correct loops. I'm assuming this is because of the manufacturing process?
NARAHARI over 10 years ago
is the reservoir cover made from seamless tube?
Dragan Beljan over 10 years ago
Can you show on some example, what is 20 closed loops?
Stephen Nyberg over 10 years ago
the closed loops can be counded as the number of parts that will be removed. when the cut is made each individual scrap part that is removed would be from one closed loop. I hope this expination helps a little.
Kyrylo Novikov over 10 years ago
Hello. What is the thickness of laser cut?
Joe Valverde over 10 years ago
Thats a good way of putting it Stephen
Rashiga Walallawita over 10 years ago
Any details on the manufacturing mehtods used for production of existing cover designgs?
Scott Bruins over 10 years ago
The covers are cut using a laser.
J.P. Fraley over 10 years ago
Could you give dimensions or a SW file for cap and fasteners. Adding caps and fasteners to the challenge would be cool too.
J.P. Fraley over 10 years ago
Also do the cuts for the RedHardinger logo count as part of the 20 closed looped cuts?
Joe Valverde over 10 years ago
J.p the cuts for the logo do not count towards the 20 closed loops:-)

What is the clearance of the laser cut from the edge ?
chandan over 10 years ago
if i will take inch instead of mm then there will be any problem ......
pls ....ans it fast
chandan over 10 years ago
i took it just 350 and 61 and 64 inch..
Kris G over 10 years ago
I have a question about laser cut. How take off the sharp edges when the cut is done. I mean fillet is not an option here, am i right? So there cannot be any rounded edges like a fillet or a tubed shape, only sharp edges?
Gandhi Perkasa over 10 years ago
Hi ann saint you may have to read all the comments above, not only the requirement, and see that there is some additional information in the comments..
A D over 10 years ago
@ Christos, there is a process named vibratory finishing or tumbling or mass-finishing, the edges are after the process a little bit round (0,1-0,3 mm).
A D over 10 years ago
@ Kirill, the thickness of the laser cut is dependent from the wall thickness, for more thickness is more energy required and this will increase the cut thickness, in our case the thickness will come to 02-0,3 mm
Frederik Vollbrecht over 10 years ago
Wow, i'm surprised about the results, so many other rly nice designs. Hard job to be part in the jury I think.
Loved this challenge! Congrats to all participants!
