Show off your skills and solve real design problems
The SSC (Shelby Supercars -http://www.shelbysupercars.com/) design team would like to create an exciting challenge opportunity for the auto-enthusiast design engineer out there. They need an interior design that has an appearance and feel that is cutting-edge, semi-futuristic, elegant, purpose built and follows the already completed exterior body design of the Tuatara.
Here is a narrative to describe the Tuatara: The SSC Tuatara is unadulterated adrenaline created to produce the ultimate driving experience. It is powered by an ultra-high-revving twin turbo V8, and generates 1350 hp at a maximum speed of 275 mph. With a compelling purpose, the SSC Tuatara beautifully balances soft, sensual volumes while taking its inspiration from prototype race cars and the innovative spirit of the American aerospace industry. The teardrop shaped canopy suspended atop the fuselage-like body and vertical stabilizing fins distinctly reflect its fighter jet influence. The use of light weight exotic materials throughout the design are featured externally by the cutting edge technology encompassed in the one-piece carbon fiber wheels by Carbon Revolution. This technology acts as the foundation for strength, beauty and extreme performance of the Tuatara. Please see the attached photo's to direct your imagination. At this point of the design process, we only need design concepts (not detailed component drawings) and we love the idea of having the imaginations of numerous engineers working on the early stage of this important part of the process. Please download the attached specification that will provide the general design space parameters for this challenge.
The Ultimate Aero interior photo's were not provided to guide your imagination (we want to obtain a completely different style/design), they were only provided to offer visual perspective for steering wheel placement, deep foot-wells, and radical slope of the windshield.
Interior must have A/C- Heater Vents
Interior must have display instruments (Could be one display or many individual instruments) Normally would include Speedometer, Tachometer, Water Temp, Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, Horsepower Gauge, Transmission Temp, Fuel Level, Turn Signal indicators, etc.
Design should feature a centrally located, large touch screen to control everything from A/C- heat controls, Navigation, Power Windows, Power Mirrors, Sound System, Full Time Rear View Camera. This is not mandatory but can be utilized in the design.
The Tuatara comes standard with a 7-speed H-pattern shifter (centrally mounted on the console). But SSC also offers an optional steering wheel mounted paddle shift for the clutchless customer. Use the H shifter if only doing one version.
Shelby would like to see 3D models as well as photo realistic renderings for visualization purposes
Dimensions given in the DWG are general dimensions just to base some interior concepts from. SSC will be shifting dimensions slightly during the passenger ergonomics study, but they need to make a decision on a basic concept to get started.
SSC is looking for a conceptual design for the interior package, including: Seats, dash, console, instruments, door panels, A/C-Heater Vents. The design doesn't have to be finalized.
Winning design will be chosen based on the appearance and feel, design and elegance of the interior.
The competition is open to everyone
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members
You can submit several designs
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition
Only models uploaded through this challenge page here will participate in the competition
Tag your model with “tuatara” to make it easier to find.

Wow ! That's an awesome challenge !!
Night would be short to accomplish this but that's just great !
Wish good luck to all the engineers :)
Sylvain Gerber over 12 years ago
You're right my friend ... about this very very nice challenge .... and short nights !!!!

Just looking at the drawing of the interior space, and some of the dimensions seem to have been omitted ( the location of the gear lever, the distance from the top of the wheel arch to the roofline and the detail of the transmission tunnel ). Also, the plan view and the side view are conflicting ( in the plan view, the top of the sill appears to go all the way to the back of the interior space, but in the side view, it stops where it meets the firewall ).
Are you able to provide more information about this please.
Cheers
John Huizingh over 12 years ago
I only have 2 views is that correct?? If so , I then think we are missing the front view or not?
John Huizingh over 12 years ago
Because the position of the steering wheel and pedals is now not clear for example, a 3D model of this drawing would be even better of course.

Very interesting - Shelby the well-known name in motor racing
Alireza SKH over 12 years ago
sorry guys but what is a H shifter.
John Huizingh over 12 years ago
That is just the pattern for the gear changes.
Something like this:

I feel that SSC search only IDEA in this competition??!!

We updated the DWG file in the specification. And yes please remember that SSC is looking for a conceptual design for the interior package, including: Seats, dash, console, instruments, door panels, A/C-Heater Vents.
The dimensions given are general dimensions just to base some interior concepts from. SSC will be shifting dimensions slightly during the passenger ergonomics study.

are sketches accepted...? I mean hand drawings with different views of the front board and gadgets on it . for those who cannot finish the 3d in time...
Jerod Shelby over 12 years ago
Yes. Sketches will be accepted but will be graded on a lower scale than a 3D model/ rendering.
Benjamin Garson over 12 years ago
Just a quick question : 7 speeds means reverse included or 7 Drive + 1 Reverse ?
Jerod Shelby over 12 years ago
7 Forward gears + 1 Reverse. (8 Total)

Wow what an amazing opportunity! I hope I can free up some time and give it a shot!
Jerod Shelby over 12 years ago
Hi Matt,
I actually was admiring some of your work a month or so back, when we were deciding when to do this challenge. I would love to see what your imagination would come up with for this challenge. Hope we get that opportunity!
Anthony Samboer over 12 years ago
Unfortunately it does not look like this competition is being well supported thus far. Many still busy with the CRK electric car. It's a pity though as this is an excellent opportunity. Maybe an extension should be considered. More time will mean more entries and better quality designs.
John Huizingh over 12 years ago
No extension please because after this challenge I will focus on the CRK challenge again. The CRK challenge is 8 days longer than this one. If there will be an extension it would be very difficult where to prioritise.
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
Thanks Jerod!!! I have an idea brewing in my head and i started a layout last night. The sketches provided make it a little tough for the way i go about the design but since it just a concept i think it will be great. How far do you guys want to take the design? I mean in terms of electronics. I think the car is beautiful and deserves some really trick components(that might not exist yet:)).

This challenge is AMAZING! I am new to Solidworks and I am pushing my skill to the limits. I have learned more in the last week than the last three months. GRAB CAD ROCKS!!! Thanks SSC!
Benji Cepeda over 12 years ago
Is there a chance you could upload a top view of the car in order to give an idea of the front glass extension, I've downloaded the drawings but that's not clear enough to make an accurate model.
Edward Smith over 12 years ago
What is the EXACT time this competition is over? What time zone?
Rob Sawatsky over 12 years ago
Awesome. This contest is amazing! To everyone who's submitted: great work guys/girls! Hopefully I'll be able to submit before the deadline. Just like Edward, I'd also like to know the exact timeline for it.
Thanks for this contest SSC and GrabCAD!

I'm not absolutely sure if I calculated the timezones correctly, but you should have 4 more hours.
Rob Sawatsky over 12 years ago
Anyone care to confirm?

Heh, yeah that was my tired brain talking. Mixed up yesterday with today. Sorry Arbabali. The approximate time count is in the challenge header too.

Hi, does anyone know how much time does it take for an uploaded model to appear in the challenge? I've uploaded a model about an hour ago and I can see it in my models and library search but it doesn't appear here as an entry, I've checked for the tuatara tag and it's all right, anyone has an idea?
Benji Cepeda over 12 years ago
I've uploaded another model, both from the link here at this challenge in "Submit your design now, Upload model" but I still can't see it. Hope there is no problem for you to see it, but is in library however
Sylvain Gerber over 12 years ago
Same for me.
I upload when he left nine hours Before the deadline ... I hope you will have no problems.
I participate as a team with Benjamin Garson and for him it worked ... the time one of us is visible I think it's good?

I had the same problem :S, I upload this model before the deadline Tuatara Modul

the competition seems to be still active , as is seen in the website , is there any chance of beig considered for the competition if a design is uploaded at this stage ? can someone tell me is the competition still open to upload ?
Andrei D over 12 years ago
well, I cannot see the Upload button anymore, in the "Entries" page, so it's closed. I guess is active because the winners are not yet chosen.
Benjamin Garson over 12 years ago
Hi ! I've seen the results and I would say congratulations to all the winners, their design were great, no doubt :)
I just want to add just something that really disappoint me and I hope Josh, Indrek and M. Shelby would read this and think about it :
What is the right position to have when you are in the jury and leave tons of comments on entries ?
When I see the winners, I have to say that I'm not surprised, they received lots of comments to make some modifications from M. Shelby. Is it the definition of a challenge ? As I was another guy working hard, sacrificing hours of sleep, to model and make an entry, my thoughts were this week : is it necessary to continue until the delay, the choice was already clearly done on Sasank's entry... I'm not an extremist but when you are in a jury, you can give your opinion, maybe once or twice but not 20 replies like for Sasank. It is not very respectful for the other competitors. I'm very disappointed by the non-human attitude on this challenge.
It's my opinion, and only mine.
And to be clear, I don't complain about the results ! I just don't like the attitude.
M. Shelby's challenge was great and I thank him to have given Grabcad the opportunity to do it.
miniskooge over 12 years ago
Thanks Andrei !! for clearing my query .. and your kind reply :-) .
Edward Smith over 12 years ago
Benjamin, I was wondering the same thing. I've been waiting this whole time to see who got 4th. The way it settled down no one else got 4th, lol.
All that being said, at the end of the day it is Shelby's money and his competition. Grabcad is just the platform.
I'm new to modeling on Solidworks. I hadn't used a loft until this competition. I learned a lot about Solidworks so no complaints.
Rob Sawatsky over 12 years ago
Hey Benjamin,
You and Sylvain did some great work on your concept. I really like the detail in the seats and, as usual, the rendering skills are fantastic.
I think your comment about Mr. Shelby's involvement in the challenge raises a good point. If this were a challenge based solely on competition then a juror's guidance could be seen as being partial or biased. The issue lies with the structure of the challenges on GrabCAD. The fact that entries are visible and downloadable and comments are allowed before the contest is closed changes the dynamic of the contest to more of a true crowd-sourced work project. I would argue that design can greatly benefit from criticism and iteration and so, in this situation, the earlier submitted works were able to benefit from Mr. Shelby's vested interest and the time remaining before the deadline.
If you look at it as a job instead of a competition, I think it makes perfect sense. Mr. Shelby is expecting results from this challenge and I think it's entirely fair for him to guide the models toward more acceptable forms.
That's just my opinion on the subject.
Nic over 12 years ago
Congrats to everyone that partook in this great comp. I must say I have the same feelings as Ben, but must agree with Rob. I think in future I will try and get in with an early design concept and try get as much feedback as possible. I think community involvement plays a big part here on GrabCAD and rightly so. Sasank has been very involved and offered lots of support to everyone. I just look forward to the next comp. For now I will just wear both of my GrabCAD tees...at the same time....as a reminder of my failure ;)
Benjamin Garson over 12 years ago
Thanks Rob for you nice words on our work with Sylvain.
You know, I don't care about loosing challenges, that's the game ! :). The challenge was great, and it pushes ourself to give more and more each time and that's the important part.
Clearly, in a natural project life, to propose early concept to a client and make some iterations to find what the client really wants is normal. M. Shelby pay for the challenge, I agree with you, and I don't blame the fact that he was really enthusiast with the top 3 designs. What I dislike it's the fact that almost one week before the end, we already know who would win the challenge. Why giving a deadline so ? It seems to me that nobody could have a better idea than these designs (I don't mean I had better idea), but when you put an entry to a challenge, everybody could say to him : I have my chance. And in fact for this one it couldn't.
If I say that, it's because, I've followed several challenges on Grabcad, and it never has been done like this. Sometimes the 'Sponsor' put one comment to say that he likes a design, or give a little advice, put that's all. This time it was a bit too much for me... On the others challenges Amarok, Exobike, Koenigsegg, the results were not perfect and it always needs some home engineering/designing to fine tune the design.
The involvements asked by M. Shelby could seriously be done after the results and I'm sure the winners would have made them without asking money or something back (because a grabcader is crazy and driven by passion ;).
Well, I can see some of you have the same feeling, so I'm not as crazy as I thought :D
Once again, I congratulate all the winners, their entries are great, and thanks again for both M. Shelby and Grabcad to bring us the opportunity to spend so much time involving ourselves on design and CAD modelling instead of sleeping ;)
Nic over 12 years ago
Well put Ben. Another thing I would appreciate right now is a little feedback on the winning models. I'm sure the GrabCAD team will have more to tell us in the coming days. Perhaps just a few points as to what design elements were strong/weak in the individual entries. I know I would find this most helpful in my future designs, particularly for the finishing touches. It will be very interesting to see how the final interior will be manufactured and if we will see any of the elements seen in this comp make it to production.
Anthony Samboer over 12 years ago
Must say Congrats to all the winners. I really enjoyed the project and learned a lot. @ Nic, please don't consider your entry as a failure. You did well, you should be proud.
Nic over 12 years ago
Haha, nah Anthony never... was just a snide jibe at myself ;) . Just makes me want to try harder. Cheers
Sylvain Gerber over 12 years ago
I have to say that I have also the same feeling as Benjamin.
I had the impression to know the winner before the end of the challenge.
Of course I respect the jury's decision and I think the winners did a great job (although I find it a little strange that the first and the third is the same person).
My disappointment is more at the way things were done.
From my point of view, a jury can comment on entries, but does not guide one or more participants.
He will judge the entries for what they are and choose the winners at the end.
All modifications can be made once the challenge is over between Mr. Shelby and the winner.
And it is normal to make adjustments between what we did for a challenge and what needs to be done to reality.
I can understand that Mr Shelby has a crush on a design but it must reserve its decision until the end of the challenge.
I asked myself if I would go to the end of the challenge but considering all the work we had done with Benjamin, we decided to finish but I can imagine that some will be discouraged.
The competitions are really exciting and it was really the case on this challenge ... no doubt about it!
They are the means to excel and to test other approaches.
Thanks Mr Shelby for this great challenge!!!
Again I respect the jury's choice and I congratulate all the winners... You really deserved guys !!!
Thank you GrabCad for all these challenges ... they are very high level !!!
I look for the next one!!!
John Huizingh over 12 years ago
I agree with the opinions above. This was the strangest competition I was in ever ( also one of the coolest by the way but OK). Because to me also along the way was perfectly clear who would be the winner. ( for example :what else would be the reason to send a personal e-mail to a competitor while the competition is still running).
Allthough I did know the winner allready it did not stop me by the way. I just wanted to make my design better because, like mentioned above already, most people uploading here act out of passion.
To me also the feedback could have been done after the winning concepts were chosen, allthough I understand and appreciated the enthusiasm of Mr Shelby but I think that would be more fair to all the competitors. At least than the entries are all judged equally. What might have caused this situation by the way is that there untill a couple of days before the deadline only a few entries were uploaded when Mr.Shelby started to give feedback . Suddenly it went quick and there were more than 30 entries and offcourse giving feedback to all the competitors will cost a lot of time then.
To summarize: A very very cool challenge but here and there some strange things happened.
Looking forward to the next challenge!! Maybe SSC also needs a Electric car ??:-)
Rob Sawatsky over 12 years ago
Hey Guys,
This is the first challenge I participated in, so I guess I didn't have any expectations. I just rolled with it as feedback came. I do agree with the viewpoint that modifications could be made after the winner is chosen and I feel it is strange that 1st and 3rd were won by very similar entries from the same person.
I'm grateful though, for the feedback and comments that I received and congratulate everyone who submitted. It was a big challenge in a short time.
Thanks again to GrabCAD and Jerod Shelby for the opportunity.
David Dearing over 12 years ago
Congratulations to the winners. Nice designs. I too would add a voice to those who are concerned about Judge "coaching" during the contest period. Perhaps the winning approach is to go ahead and post your drafts, get input from the head judge, and mold your design into the winning entry as you go. I'm not sure that is terribly fair, but it is the way "real life" goes- you get input from your customer from start to finish as you go. Strange to apply this to a contest, but what can you do. Looking forward to more excellent challenges like this one in the future.
John Huizingh over 12 years ago
What also could be a idea David is that there will be a pre-selecting round. First all the competitors upload their designs within a giving period. In this period the judges can not give their comments, so it is just uploading.
The 5 best designs go to the next round and in this round they improve their design together with the judges or project owner in this case Mr.Shelby. This process is visible for everybody else on GRABCAD (because this is very interesting for everybody to follow) but the only people who can upload are the 5 best designs.
This period is also for a given time and after this period the winner will be chosen.
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
Great competition. You got some top notch results Jerod! I wish i had more time to put into this or hopped in when it started. I hadn't been following this comp too closely other than leaving a few comments but going back through it does seem a bit odd the number of comments and direction given. It is more in line with a client relationship so I can see how some people are seeing it as unfair. I do think the changes you asked for from Saansk really wouldnt have affect the outcome so they could have been asked for after the comp. I had a lot of fun planning an interior since this was my first. I look forward to any future challenges you send to GrabCAD. From the results you got I have a feeling we will be seeing you again!
Congrats to all the winners! Great job to you and to everyone else that participated.
