Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Heroes Too challenges you to rethink the water bottle.
As an international NGO committed to combatting climate change through the power of individuals, we call upon the global design community to help us create a water bottle unlike any other.
We call it the Cause Bottle®—a bottle that acts as a vehicle for change.
Heroes Too is also dedicated to creating sustainable behaviors. While awareness of eco-bottles has increased, millions of plastic bottles are still released into our seas, soil and shores. “Swimming in an ocean of plastic” is a real issue and everyday plastic negatively impacts impacts marine life and their surrounding ecosystems.
The Cause Bottle works as a trigger to get people to rethink their decisions daily, whilst also contributing to efforts to combat environmental degradation. This is your chance to be part of a global movement!
Unless declined, we will feature our winning designers on all marketing and packaging. Winning submissions will be judged by a panel of philanthropists, designers, brand experts, and advertising pioneers and then will be featured on Kickstarter.
Get your creativity hat on and rethink the water bottle!
You must include:
- STEP or IGES version;
- Rendering of your design;
- Short description of why your design is functional.
You are encouraged to include:
- Native CAD version.
- The cause you want to support (Water Conservation, Deforestation or Environmental Education & Awareness).
Judging criteria:
- Originality of design;
- Ease of manufacturing;
- Ease of use;
- Comfort level when using with one hand.
Technical requirements:
- Drinkware type: hydration water bottle with lid.
- Material: 18/8 stainless steel bottle & plastic lid.
- Optimal capacity: 21-28 oz / 621ml - 828ml.
- Production processes used: injection, co-molding and hydroforming.
- Must use food grade material.
- The bottle must be able to stand on a flat surface.
- Not mandatory, but if possible the bottle should fit into a car cup holder (reference size: about 3.5” wide and 2.25” deep).
- Design should be easily produced for commercialization.
- The bottle should be designed to be leak-proof.
- The bottle needs an area for logo branding.
- The walls must be at least 1mm in thickness for cold drink and 1.5mm for hot drink.
- The lid can be a screw-on / tight fit but must not be too tight. Torque tolerance is within 2kg – 2.5kg.

What is the meaning of "18/8 stainless steel"?
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
This is the more technical answer.
While all 300 series stainless steels share this 18/8 mix, slight differences in chemical composition between the different grades of the 300 series do make certain grades more resistant than others against particular types of corrosion. In the fastener industry the term “18-8″ is often used as a designation for a bolt, nut, or washer manufactured from 300 series stainless steel material that has the 18% chromium/8% nickel alloy mixture
This is the simpler answer.
The grade of the steel that is most commonly used in housewares products. It is rust resistant and food safe.
Stephan H. Tobias (BuseHase) about 9 years ago
fine, thanks raymond ;-)
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
My pleasure :)
Ben Ewing about 9 years ago
Hi everyone. One clarification needed to be made on the technical requirements: the bottle should be made of 18/8 stainless steel and the lid should be made of plastic. The technical requirements above should now reflect this! Hopefully this helps as you continue to work on your submissions. Thanks for participating in The Cause Bottle Challenge!
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
More than likely the lid will be made from plastic, however we left it open to see what came out the entries.
Ridwan Sept about 9 years ago
I have a few questions before following this challenge :
1. So what is the core of this challenge is how to make mainset of someone so reluctant to throw the bottle . In order to reduce the amount of garbage plastic bottles ?
2. The bottle must have a style and also features more than a bottle generally , so as to make a person do not throw it away ?
3. Must use steel for the body of the bottle ? may not use plastic ?
4. Is it permissible for us to combine the steel body and plastic for the body to create stylish accessories ?
5. It crossed my mind about the picture for the bottle in question here , whether as a thermos ( to keep the temperature of the fluid temperature ) ?
Valerie Yi Mei about 9 years ago
"Currently in the drinkware market, there are a few trends designers may want to be aware of, though they do not need to be factored into their designs:
- bottles that infuse various flavors, like fruit, into water are popular."
Do we have to suggest the drink for the bottle too? I am a little confused about this one.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Forgive me Ridwan and Valerie for my late reply. I offer a reason rather than an excuse: one of my duties is to attend events, to network for sponsors. Last night was a bit too much free flowing champaign, therefore afterwards I was not in a fit state to address your question:)
1. The core of this challenge is to reduce the use of single use plastic bottles. The trend is for increased sales of bottled water - not good.
2. We choose stainless steel for the body because it is inert and can be recycled over and over at end of life use.
3. We leave the choice of design of double wall (insulated) or single wall to the designers. In some countries people like to drink hot or warm water.
4. There are existing products on the market that allows the user to infuse fruit flavour into their water by adding any variety of fruit. We pointed this out, but you don't have to go that route.
5. Water is life, it is also the best fluid for hydration.
6. We could end up making bottles from more than one designs.
I hope I have answered your questions.
Looking forward to your entries.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
A bit more elaboration: the core of this competition is to find AWSOME designs that we will produce and market. We want to encourage more people to use refillable containers.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Some interesting figures:
a. In the U.S. 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown out every hour.
b. Less than 30 ptc. is recycled
c. The rest ends up in landfills and in our Oceans.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Wishing everyone a great weekend, although I shall still be looking out for more wonderful design entries!
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Miguel, look forward to you joining our competition :)
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Did I say we could end up making bottles from several design? Some time I repeat myself - I guess its an age thing.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Interesting figure:
a. China contributes about 3.53 million metric tons of plastic waste to world oceans.
b. Indonesia contributes about 1.29 million metric tons of plastic waste to world oceans.

Ridiculous prizes
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
We created this challenge because of the global reach of the GrabCad community, that the issues and problems we are addressing is global and one that is getting worse. We believe the solution lies in behavioural changes in each and everyone of us, "Protecting Our Planet Through People Power”.
Wish we could afford more generous prizes:(
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Hi all, out competition is featured on Inhabitat online magazine. http://inhabitat.com/designcompetitions/submit-your-ideas-for-a-revolutionary-new-eco-bottle-to-the-cause-bottle-challenge/
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Hi Roger-Marie, I think the idea of putting ice cubes into the bottle is a personal preference. For example in a hot place like China or Hong Kong, many people prefer to drink room temperature or hot water. I don't want to which right or wrong.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Meant to say, I don't want to say which is right or wrong.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Speaking as only one of eight judges, I am blown away by the entries, it going to be a difficult choice. But please, please make our choice difficult, bring on the entries.
Mart Berghs about 9 years ago
Ever wondered why you always get ice cold water in restaurants or soda with lots of ice in fast food chains? Prevents/block that your appetite decreases and therefore eat more.
Roger Couture about 9 years ago
I participate in this challenge to observe the influences which transpose from a design to the other one.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
For myself, I use several bottles: one for my beside table, during the night I like to a sip of warm water, in my office I have a couple of bottles of water that I take from home. Then I carry around a bottle for hot drinks and for refill at coffee shops.
We create the sea of change individually, for example when I go to a restaurant, they alway as if I want still or sparkling water: I will say tap water please.
I am by no means perfect, everyday I learn.
I do this for my four grandchildren.
Mohammad Amin Khorasanchi about 9 years ago
hello Raymond Yap
is it possible not using stainless steel, becuase it doesn't have any flexibility.
could you suggest another materials in order to build the body of bottle?
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Amin, I agree other material like plastic might have more flexibility than stainless steel, however within the constraints we have many really wonderful design submission. Please persevere.
Roger Couture about 9 years ago
And glass?
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Roger-Marie, hmm glass, glass does have a tendency to break, and so usually it would be sold with some sort of protective covering. Because the likelihood of breakage (legal liabilities also, imagine if it break when a child is holding it), that would make it not so sustainable. Also when it is broken, most likely its disposal would end up in a landfill and not recycled. So the answer is NOT:(

Roger Couture about 9 years ago
Thank you Singlefonts, but Ray tells us that the future did not come yet.
I wonder then, if there is one materials which we can mold and recyclable in spite of any deformation.

@Roger-Marie Couturehere, an example, in any case, in the right direction?

That information on glass was quite surprising for me, I thought that new development in glass was no longer possible or a option.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Love to hear of future development and news on glass. Our manufacturer of bottles tells us glass is not a good option at this moment.

Dear GrabCad community, to show our warmth and appreciation and to reward human capital: we are working on a form of royalty to be share with the winning designs. More in the next few days.
Roger Couture about 9 years ago

Roger Couture about 9 years ago
Miguel, some time the main part is not a part of technical specifications.
Ben Ewing about 9 years ago
Hi d6b34e50,
As the finalists and winners are being selected, we will be evaluating the submissions based on the technical requirements and judging criteria.
We strongly encourage all entrants to check that their submissions meet the technical requirements before the entry deadline on April 6th. I would hate for someone's amazing design to not be selected because they forgot one of the requirements. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask them!
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Many thanks to Miguel (jasson), Roger-Marie Couture and Ben Ewing for reminding the community.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Designers,
I have refrained from commenting on individual design entries for two main reasons: I am not a designer, there would be a danger of me putting my personal imprint on the outcome. I would prefer the individual's creativity to shine through.
I can’t speak for other judges; my opinion is shape and form is very important, when the Cause Bottle is sitting on a shelf, the visual impact will make the shopper want to reach out and hold the Cause Bottle. However an overriding parameter is, it must be manufacturable (cost) is important.
Abhijeet Das about 9 years ago

As I am revisiting my entry I realized my design (Reforestation Bottle) is very specific and functional towards a single cause, reforestation. Was that not the requirement of this challenge or was I supposed to submit something that could is universal in design and be branded based on whatever cause someone wanted to purchase the bottle for?
REDA DJABRI about 9 years ago
What do you think of my latest design?
Heroes Sick Bottle Mate
sean tomen about 9 years ago
Hello Raymond,
Thank you for posting the challenge.
I had a look at your website and noticed you already have a branded, stainless steel, plastic top bottle for sale. http://heroestoo.com/shop/stainlesssteelwaterbottle/
Can you give us some feedback on what areas that need improvement with your existing bottle?
In the conditions you mention that the winning submissions will be featured on kickstarter, but what exactly does that mean? Will Heroes Too be running a kickstarter campaign with the design?
Regards
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
A happy Easter holiday to everyone, health and peace and love to all.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Devin Sidell, one of my aim was to encourage creativity as much as possible.
Therefore your design submission interpretation was not necessarily wrong. Yes, you could dedicate your design submission to your choice of cause. The majority of the community chose the path of a more generic design.
So at the end of the day please focus your thoughts on DESIGN, DESIGN, DESIGN!
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Reda DJABRI, although "sick" was not one of our cause, your design storage idea would be a universal need. Your design would beg two main questions:
- are the storage idea practical and welcome in a consumer market place?
- can it be manufacture cost effectively?
We are targeting a mass market for the chosen design (designs), therefore it must have mass appeal.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Sean Tormen, our current bottle is a generic design chosen from a manufacturer of bottles, the design is not unique to Heroes Too: not our own design.
We have always felt that we needed our own UNIQUE design.
In turning to the GrabCad community, it is an extension of a platform we created; the Sustainable Design Competition, initially started with universities, the next step was to open it to a global community.
It is with People Power that many issues such as environmental degradation will be solved: hence our recently launched EcoPledge (http://heroestoo.org/) program, making changes, one individual, one school and one corporate (one country) at a time. And so the GrabCad community has become part to the solution.
The winning design (designs) will be use to launch a crowd funding campaign. We believe we have the making of a great story to tell: a successful GrabCad Challenge is part of that story.
In time I want the GrabCad community to say "yeah, we were a part of that".
Devin Sidell about 9 years ago
Thanks for the clarification Raymond! My submission could actually work as a more universal design when the "digging sleeve" is removed/not included. Then again reforestation, education and water conservation all seem to tie together anyway so maybe the sleeve is still OK.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear Community Members,
As we enter the closing round of the design challenge, I would really like to hear your views and comments on how we can make an even better challenge the next time round.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

best luck to everyone. some really had special ideas......
#David about 9 years ago
@ Raymond, thanks for a setting up interesting challenge...it was cool to see what people came up with. A couple things you can do for future ones though: 1) Up the awards to something that meshes with what you are asking people to design and accomplish: $500 for creating a new water bottle that will somehow replace people's desires to buy and use plastic water bottles is quite a bit low and even more so when you consider the amount of people, and naturally pockets (7) on the panel in my opinion. 2) Royalties are also a good way to get some serious minded folks involved, you just have to make sure they are aware of it. Had I known about the royalty I probably would've entered one of my designs despite the quite..well "interesting" prize amounts ; )
#David about 9 years ago
@Raymond: Also maybe something like "STAINLESS STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL,STAINLESS STEEL" might not have been a bad idea, lol.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
Dear David, the educational programs we are launching, we believe will lead to profound behavioural changes, which will be a positive impact for the environment. We are also running literally on a shoestring. One of the reason we are offering the royalty is, we recognise the prize was somewhat low.
I will take all comments on board, to make sure we run an even better challenge the next time round.
Raymond Yap about 9 years ago
My deep gratitude to you the GrabCad Challenge community and of course to GrabCad for hosting this design competition: but most of all our sincere appreciation to all the designers who submitted their designs ( and to those who thought about it), for without your submissions, we don't have a challenge.
Till next time.

I am fairly new here however I have to say this. It seems to me some of you could use a lesson in ''good sportsmanship''. Some comments I've read are down right rude to the judges /companies that are paying to run this challenge. If you want to suggest a entry that you think they over looked that's fine but to criticize their choices and others work is very poor sportsmanship. Just a thought, good luck to all.
