Crutch Accessory Challenge

Create a 3D printable attachment for crutches that allows you to carry a drink and a plate of food.

We have a man down here in the GrabCAD office. Our Director of Products and Support, Grant, was recently injured playing ultimate frisbee. He fractured his tibia and has been on crutches for the past two months relying on his colleagues and friends to assist with carrying items for him. After speaking with Grant he shared his obstacles of using crutches. The most irritating one of all was trying to carry food and/or a drink from the kitchen to his desk or while at home. We thought of a great idea to make this into a Challenge and leave it up to the Community to design two accessories he can attach to the crutch to carry his food and a drink without spilling.

Requirements

  • Your entry must include: 1. Native CAD files in any format 2. Renderings optional but encouraged: 3. Suggested orientation for optimal part strength when 3D printing. Bonus points for providing pictures/video of accessory in action, FEA to ensure the strength of your submission.

  • Technical requirements: Your design must be 3d printable via one of the widely available 3d printing methods: FDM, SLS, SLA or PolyJet.

  • Judging criteria:
    Judges will weigh a variety of factors but will place special attention upon the following:
    - Your design must be have the ability to accommodate a range of different styles of cups, cans, bottles, dishes, and bowls.
    - Can not spill any of the contents while using the crutches.
    - Attachable to a standard crutch (Hole size: 6.8mm, Screw Size: 4.63mm). This model was found in our Community from one of our own, Chris Buerckner, to help you get started (Crutches)!
    - Cup attachment must hold at least 12 fl oz (360 ml) of liquid without spilling.
    - Dish attachment must hold at least up to 2 lbs (1 kg) combined of food and the plate.

  • ENTERING THE COMPETITION The Challenge is open to everyone except employees and families of GrabCAD, Stratasys and the Sponsor. Multiple entries are welcome. Team entries are welcome.   By entering the Challenge you: 1. Accept the official GrabCAD Challenges Terms & Conditions. 2. Agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges (Jury). 3. Warrant that you are eligible to participate. 4. Warrant that the submission is your original work. 5. Warrant, to the best of your knowledge, your work is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited. 6. Warrant neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trademark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person. 7. Warrant participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment. 8. Are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. 9.   • SUBMITTING AN ENTRY Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD through the "Submit entry" button on this Challenge page will be considered an entry. Only public entries are eligible.   We encourage teams to use GrabCAD Workbench for developing their entries.   Entries are automatically given the tag "crutchaccessory" when uploading to GrabCAD. Please do not edit or delete this tag. Only entries with valid tag will participate in the Challenge.

  • AWARDING THE WINNERS The sum of the Awards is the total gross amount of the reward. The awarded participant is solely liable for the payment of all taxes, duties and other similar measures if imposed on the reward pursuant to the legislation of the country of his/her residence, domicile, citizenship, workplace, or any other criterion of similar nature. Only 1 award per person. All judging decisions are final.   All winners will be contacted by the GrabCAD staff to get their contact information and any other information needed to get the prize to them. All team awards will be transferred to the member who entered the Challenge.   We will release the finalists before the announcement of the winners to give the Community an opportunity to share their favorites in the comments, discuss concerns, and allow time for any testing or analysis by the Jury. The Jury will take the feedback into consideration when picking the winners.   Winning designs will be chosen based on the Rules and Requirements.   Entry deadline is August 25th, 2017 (11:59pm UTC). The finalists will be announced by September 4th, 2017. The winners will be announced by September 14th, 2017.

  • SPEC REFINEMENT We want to make sure that you have all of the information that you need to tackle the challenge. As such, in the first week of a challenge we may refine the specifications or offer clarifications based on member feedback. Please ask any questions that you have!

    I think that something that goes around your neck and rests on your chest/belly would better solution than attachment for a crutch. It could be attachable to a crutch when you don't use it but not sure if that would meet requirements for this challenge

    It may be worth noting that all crutches may not be like the example in the description. I have an old set of crutches - the diameter of the aluminum tube is slightly different (19mm or .75 inch) and mine do not have the flat area on the tube. The difference may be geographical (mine are from the U.S.) or age (mine are 24 years old).

    Sorry, but the model of the crutches - by Chris Buerckner - is available in the format for users of "SolidWorks" only. An additional provided STEP-file (.stp) would be surely helpful for all users of another CAD-Software.

    Focus is wrong here. Anything attached to crutches is a wildly complex and unnecessary exercise. The body is the best place to carry anything. Some kind of gimballed harness to wear leaves your crutches free to wave around, drop, leave them on buses etc. etc. Let's see some entries based around the torso. Far more practical.

    And just to mention. It would be good for Grabcad to always have an active challenge. Even if the prize is just a T-shirt. Some people just enjoy the challenge the right to say they made a better widget than anyone else. The prize doesn't necessarily need to be large the challenge is what needs to be epic.

    Nathaniel Andresmooi, my printer print bed size is 200mm by 200mm and it standart in a lot of printers. There are a lot of different typs of printers with a lot of bed sizes so I cant give an absolute answer...

    In the
    Da Vinci Gear Challenge
    "Stratasys Direct Manufacturing can make single FDM parts as large as 36 in. x 24 in. x 36 in. (X, Y, and Z) (914 mm x 610 mm x 914 mm)"
    So I believe they have access to a bigger printer?
    Useful for longer parts to be one solid structure.

    Pick a team captain and upload under that one person. You can mention credit in description. Grabcad won't be responsible for splitting up the one t-shirt etc. That would be up to you.

    it is good to see this kind of activity here. when i was teaching 3D printing kids camp this summer, we often would come to this page and look at the wide variety of designs from all over the world. shame the rest of the world can't come together as well. Bravo Zulu to all of you!!

    good catch on entry dates question. there is an august 18th date and a 7 day count down on the clock yet. for fairness sake use the later date? Up the the contest owner I would say. i know I would appreciate till the end of the weekend as I am still drawing up my own :)

    Going to be difficult to hold everyone to the 3D printable requirement without printer dimensions. Additionally many of the ideas are great but use non 3D printed parts which isn't allowed according to one of Olivia's responses. Short of perhaps a screw to attach to the crutch (Screw Size: 4.63mm) since it is listed. I don't believe anyone has done FEA yet so no proof of 2lb supporting strength everyone will just be guesstimating. Judging seems it will come down to can it print?
