Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Given simply an image of the Detroit Diesel DD13 engine, can you produce a detailed surface model? If so, cash in on your skills. CyDesign is launching 6 challenges, each with a different engine or transmission up for modeling. Each of the 6 challenges has a $500 prize for the best model. Win all 6 challenges and you could have $3,000 by the end of the week.
CyDesign is populating a small library of engines and transmissions used in the modeling of vehicles and vehicle capabilities. Currently, they have a few pictures and 2D graphics of these select engines and transmissions, but need to have 3D CAD models for each engine and each transmission. This challenge centers around modeling the Detroit Diesel DD13 engine.
No internal surfaces or components are required- only external surfaces must be modeled and rendered.
Dimensions (H x W x L) 53.0 x 51.5 x 58.3 in
A simple google search can pull up additional pictures and specifications as needed.
3D CAD models submitted should be similar in fidelity to diesel engine and diesel engine
Models can be done in any CAD software as long as STEP files are uploaded
The 3D CAD models only require external surfaces rendered; no internal surfaces/components needed/required
Mono-chromatic coloring with minimal shading required; do not need multi-light source shading. 3D CAD models only require one axis of rotation
Uploading CAD files of rendered models without permission to your GrabCAD profile is not allowed
The submissions will be judged on realism, creativity, composition and file size (smaller is better)
The competition is open to everyone
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members
You may submit several entries
Tag your rendering with “3DCADSTP” when uploading it to GrabCAD
All 3DCAD files have to be public
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition
Only models uploaded through this challenge page here will participate in the competition
Entries to be submitted as .stp files
The competition ends 8/10/12
$500 for most realistic 3D CAD of the model provided
Submissions will be judged upon timeliness of submittal, accuracy of 3D models relative
to picture(s)/diagrams/images provided and file size of final CAD file (smaller is better).
The judges will be comprised of CyDesign and GrabCAD staff.
CyDesign is developing a physics-based modeling system that will let the engineer quickly assess design options against requirements during the conceptual design stage.
Should the vehicle have conventional or hybrid drive? How will thermal loads affect an implanted medical device? By providing answers to these questions early in the design, a more robust and reliable system will be built.
CyDesign Studio will help the engineer manage key requirements, keep them pertinent to the design, explore the trade space of possible design alternatives, assess the viability of these alternatives, and provide guidance resulting in a much better final product.

I just want to make sure the Engine we're modeling is the Detroit Diesel DD13 right? I ask because couple of the images shown above are DD15's
Gabe Blanchet about 13 years ago
@Kira great point. We'll fix that ASAP
Romano Gaspari about 13 years ago
error on deadline
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Kira, we will update the figures; yes, we are needing the Detroit Diesel DD13 engine to be modeled. The majority of the figures have "DD13" labeled on the engine cover.
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Romano, we are looking for a very efficient contest, hence yes, we need to end the contest this week (Friday, 8/10/12). Thanks for checking

Regarding the size of the model. Is it acceptable to only upload the assembly of the model w/o its constituent parts? If this is possible, i'm planning to just convert the whole assemble into a single part and upload that instead.

detailed model....in such short time...i have to quit my job to make only one on time....but 6 models....hmmm that is a strange challenge not a unique challenge....nevermind....good luck
Mohomed Nusry about 13 years ago
Hey friends, hope this video will help you with the design.

in my opinion, the best way to take advantage of the grabcad community would be to break this huge task into smaller tasks and give a smaller amount. for example, oil pan $25, fan $25,transmission $100, etc.
Kira about 13 years ago
:D Thanks Mohomed and Therdoros! I've been going crazy trying to decipher some of these low res pics from Google :P
Aykut Dana about 13 years ago
I need a month for this challenge :)
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Kira,
Yes, only need the final assembly for the use ; uploading a single file would be fine.
thanks
David

@Allan
re: "Uploading...." ; the goal is to make sure the files uploaded are viewable to the community and judges. Need to make sure permissions are correctly set.
thanks,
David

@Allan
re" "do you want CAD files...."; the .stp files from the selected design are meant to be used by a Unity 3D player. I am not requesting the actual .3ds/.dxf/.etc files at this time.
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Allan - my team is using the .stp files for viewing and other efforts, so we are using a conversion utility.

I have only one question: in the description you wrote: CyDesign is launching 6 challenges today, each with a different engine or transmission up for modeling.. So where are the other 5?
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Comed and others: We will launch the other 5 challenges today or tomorrow. Please look for them and participate.
Tejas Deshpande about 13 years ago
Do we have to make new 3d designs or use the existing "step file" that is available ?
Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
Thanks David.
angel about 13 years ago
i am not able to understand what to do?
do i have to submit a 3d cad model in .stp format made by myself.
or
i have to render the models whose link is given on this competition page.
or anything else.
please reply
Nick Hampton about 13 years ago
Would love to enter but 3 days for a quality product would require a full time commitment.Unfortunate as it is a great challenge.
angel about 13 years ago
please reply to above said query
martin about 13 years ago
Is this a joke?
Tejas Deshpande about 13 years ago
Do we really have to make a new model from ground up ???
Abhijeet about 13 years ago
Anybody in joking mood out here? :D
Abhijeet about 13 years ago
Such engines i dont think can be done with just a single image provided. Any plans available for this?
Farzin Raafat about 13 years ago
the time is so short!!!!!!!!
Ian Cummings about 13 years ago
David: When is the final deadline cutoff? Are submissions allowed until 8/10, 11:59PM? Which timezone?
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Abhijeet - no plans available ; attempts to contact mfg were unsuccesful, hence the effort with the awesome GrabCAD community.
@farzin - 5 more contests start today, with a 7 day length.
@Ian - this contest ends today ; i will be happy to review submissions that come in as late as 12 mid Pacific time (California).
naveen thontepu about 13 years ago
by reading i understood that its a great comp
but can u clearly say what we have to design for the comp do u need just the fan, the outer cover and the oil pan or
do u need us to design the images that are posted up to the miniature detail
clearly me up with the fast.
thank you.
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@naveen and others - given the short timeframe for these contests (5 more start soon), i know that the amount of detail that is possible is limited, not infinite. the second entry is heading the in the right direction, use this as the best guidance i can give.
Philippe Voinov about 13 years ago
I have the same question as Iam, when is the deadline _time_? Thanks
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@philippe - this contest ends today ; i will be happy to review submissions that come in as late as 12 mid Pacific time (California).
Philippe Voinov about 13 years ago
@david I'm sorry but I'm still a bit confused as I'm in Europe. Are there approximately 10 or aproximately 20 hours left?
BELAID Amine about 13 years ago
the photo it is not clear please change it.
David Hinz about 13 years ago
All, we will have 5 more challenges kicking off tomorrow.
3 transmissions and 2 more engines. please check back.
great interest so far.
David Hinz about 13 years ago
@Philippe, about 8.5 hrs left (~3:30pm here in Palo Alto CA).
Michael Fritzenwallner about 13 years ago
@David Your last comment was a bit of misleading.. i worked long hours just to submit it on time and now there's a whole day left?!
Farzin Raafat about 13 years ago
i uploaded my file, tried 3 times,it is in my page, but it is not in contest entry!pleaseeeeeeeeee helpp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ármin Fendrik about 13 years ago
Send it to the e-mail given above in comments, and your work will be listed.
Kaspar Kiis about 13 years ago
Hi everybody, we will not miss off any of the entries. Just have another look at http://grabcad.com/challenges/cydesign-part-1-detroit-diesel-dd13-engine/entries and send me an e-mail directly to kaspar@grabcad.com if your entry is not listed. Thanks.
Farzin Raafat about 13 years ago
could someone explain about the balance of fake details, and the file size?
Cemal Uslu about 13 years ago
I'm sorry but I don't believe if winner is a real winner.
Philippe Voinov about 13 years ago
Why not? His model was really good, he deserves it. (btw. this contest needs to be moved to "finished" not "selecting winners")
jaxon about 13 years ago
winners model looks good, but another models look better and more realistic. it's your decision
Awp Harsh about 13 years ago
agreed with Cemal Uslu & jaxon
