Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Open to students worldwide, Extreme Redesign is an annual 3D printing challenge created
by Stratasys, Inc. that invites students to design an original piece of art, jewelry or
architecture, or to make an existing design better. This year, extreme redesign features 3
categories:
• Engineering: Secondary Education (middle/high school students)
• Engineering: Post-Secondary (university, college, or post-secondary students)
• Art, Jewelry & Architecture (student of any grade level)
Don't have access to a 3D printer? No problem! To enter, individual students or teams must
create and submit their designs files in .STL format with a compelling description
highlighting the designs inspiration, meaning and impact. The more info the better – images,
renderings, videos and screen shots of the design are encouraged!
Entries will be accepted through (April, 24, 2020), but the earlier you submit, the more
opportunity you have to get feedback on your design and have a chance to improve it and re-
upload improved files before the submission window closes.
The Art, Jewelry and Architecture Category
In this category, you are encouraged to use your imagination and express your creativity in
submitting an artistic, unique and original design that takes full advantage of capabilities offered by 3D printing. Consider different 3D printing methodologies (like FDM or PolyJet)
and materials available, and pick the best method for the production of your design. We are
looking for designs that are aesthetically pleasing and evoke emotion. In this category, the
description is especially important - and we encourage you to be creative with the
description as well! Let us know what inspired your design, what is the meaning of your
design and what impact you'd like it to have.
Check out images of some of the past winners of Extreme Redesign Art, Jewelry or
Architecture below, or visit Extreme Redesign Challenge winners page here. You can also
see some of the past challenge submissions uploaded on the Stratasys Education Extreme
Redesign GrabCAD account here.

Hello,
I have a question:
To what extent is something considered art?

Congratulations to all of the finalist, there are some very cool designs posted! I would like to give my feedback for some of the designs.
My favorite designs are “The Starry Night - Redesigned With Moving Parts” and the “Anamorphic Text Art”. I think the Starry Night especially followed the themes of this challenge, Art and Redesign, very well, and it is also the only entry that actually 3D printed their model, as opposed to just making a computer rendering.
I noticed that some of the entries do not follow all of the contest rules:
The “Shield to Heal” rendering is very impressive, but I do not think it would be possible to print, especially at a degree that will still allow the moving parts to work smoothly - also given the scale of the model (it is fairly small, as per the contest rules). Also, it seems the designer has received his PhD in January of 2020, and this contest is only open to students, so I am not sure if this still is in accordance with the rules.
I have a similar critique for the “Guards Themselves” rendering, it has tremendous detail, however either the model would have to be scaled up immensely (and thereby be too big for the contest requirements) or these details would not print nicely. Also, the designer intends for the model to move with the wind, which seems unrealistic for 3d Printed mechanisms, even with a large amount of lubrication and sanding. I would like to see actual printed models of both of these designs, to see if they are actually possible to print.
This challenge specifies that the description is very important, and must be a minimum of 200 words, however the “Gem Call Whistle”, the “Basileia”, the “Anamorphic Text Art”, and “the Solar Pod” do not meet the 200 word requirement.
The “Basileia” and “Physalis Lamp” also both seem to be too tall for the contest requirements, but both are otherwise very cool concepts.
Lastly, the “Coral Bracelet” is also a very pretty design, but once again I would like to see it actually printed, as I imagine it would be a very difficult print, or would require a large amount of support material, which could make post-processing a nightmare. I think the design itself is very interesting, however it is definitely not optimized for 3D printing, and might be better suited for a different manufacturing method.
I wonder how strictly the judges will consider the rules of the contest, when choosing the winner. That said, best of luck to all of the finalists- all of the designs are very impressive!

The Anamorphic Text Art has to be my favourite amongst all of it's fellow competitors as it is not only very well designed but also makes me wonder how the creator did it. Great combination of art and engineering

Amazed to see all the final entries. Good job by everyone. Two of them that especially caught my eyes were Cryptex and Anamorphic Text art. Cryptex looks like an ancient piece of art fused with modern cryptic technologies. Anamorphic art has been around for quite a while now and humans have always been fascinated by this art. It makes it even interesting to think of this redesigned text for use as a personal decorative item, which was also the motive of this challenge.
