Removing a Model in SolidWorks and Fusion 360 – Detailed Steps
SolidWorks
To delete a model in SolidWorks, follow these steps:
Method 1: Delete the Model File
Close the File in SolidWorks – Ensure that the model (part, assembly, or drawing) is not open in SolidWorks.
Locate the File:
Navigate to the folder where the model is stored.
The files usually have extensions like:
.SLDPRT (Part file)
.SLDASM (Assembly file)
.SLDDRW (Drawing file)
Delete the File:
Right-click on the file and choose Delete.
If you want to permanently remove it, empty the Recycle Bin.
Method 2: Remove from SolidWorks Vault (PDM)
If you are using SolidWorks PDM (Product Data Management):
Open the PDM Vault: Go to the PDM Vault View in File Explorer.
Locate the Model: Find the model inside the PDM folder.
Check In/Out Status:
If it is checked out by someone, they need to check it in before deletion.
Delete the Model: Right-click and choose Delete.
Permanently Remove (If Needed): Ask an admin to permanently remove it from the vault.
Important Considerations in SolidWorks
If the file is used in assemblies (.SLDASM), deleting it might break the assembly.
Always check for external references using:
File → Find References
This helps ensure that other files aren’t dependent on the one you are deleting.
Fusion 360
Fusion 360 stores files in the cloud, so deleting a model requires different steps.
Method 1: Delete a Model from the Data Panel
Open Fusion 360 and sign in.
Access the Data Panel:
Click on the nine-box grid icon in the top-left corner to open the Data Panel.
Locate the Model:
Navigate to the Project folder where your model is saved.
Right-Click the File:
Select Delete to move the model to the Trash.
Method 2: Permanently Delete from Trash
Open the Data Panel.
Click on Trash (bottom of the Data Panel).
Find the Model you want to remove.
Right-Click and Choose "Permanently Delete".
Important Considerations in Fusion 360
Undo Deletion: You can restore files from the Trash unless permanently deleted.
Linked Components: If the model is referenced in an assembly, deleting it will cause missing references.
Version Control: Fusion 360 keeps a history of versions, so deleting a file removes all previous versions.
