Hello,
As you may know, the .sldasm (meaning Solidworks assembly) is an archive file.
Meaning in it there is not just a single model but an entire assembly with their own .sldprt files.
To solve your problem: Have you tried using Autodesk Fusion 360, that's what I work with. It's free and capable of opening .sldasm files.
