It really depends on the STEP file.
SOLIDWORKS has a Feature Recognition add-in which will attempt to identify features in an imported model. Those features are then sketched, and rebuilt so a feature tree exists.
For simple parts it works sometimes.
For complex parts, you might get some features.
Give it a try and see how it does for your model.
open file in solidwork and save as to every you want
Normally When you open a step file with solid works it will open. but the model features wont come.
Only SW2015 and above versions has a option to get back the features of your model.
When you open a step file with solid works it automatically converts it.
