Proprietary File Formats

Much as I appreciate those who share the results of their efforts on sites like this I have to ask why they bother when they post them in proprietary formats that the people who most need access to shared stuff i.e. non-professionals, quite clearly can't afford the insanely expensive software required to open them.

There are perfectly decent, well known file exchange formats to use that everyone can access. Why wouldn't you use them?

This looks like an open-ended discussion, not a question.
Anyways, those file formats are used so that users of the same software can not only see the model, but also check out the way of modelling.
As for those who can't afford such software, feel free to contact the uploader and ask him to upload the model in another format.
