Office Chair Wheel Mount

How to model an office chair wheel mount.

  1. Step 1: Sketching

Like with any other project, the first step is to sketch the shape that we want. In this case the basic shape of the wheel mount as seen from the side is like in the above figure.

  2. Step 2: Extrude

The second step in making a wheel mount is to extrude the sketch that we have made before to the desired width of the wheel mount.

  3. Step 3: Creating The Middle Portion

The third step is to sketch another shape on the horizontal plane, that is perpendicular to the sides of the wheel mount.

To create the middle portion, we simply draw a rectangle with a dimension of the axle width of the wheel by the diameter of the initial arc length. In my case the dimensions are (16 x 51) mm.

  4. Step 4: Extruding The Middle Portion

After the sketch, we can extrude it vertically until it meets with the arc of the first extrusion.

These are the settings that I used for the extrusion.

  5. Step 5: Creating A Hole For The Axle

Before we extrude the hole, we need to mark the center point of the hole. In my case the center point for the hole is at the center of the arc.

After marking the center point, we can then extrude a hole right through the middle portion with the diameter equal to that of the wheel axle, in my case it is 14 mm.

  6. Step 6: Creating The Mounting Mechanism

To create the mounting mechanism to the legs of the chair, we first draw a sketch on the top side of the wheel mount with a diameter equal to that of the mounting hole.

After the sketch is done, we can extrude the sketch to the desired height, and add a chamfer at the upper end of the extrusion.

  7. Step 7: Adding Fillets

The last step is to add fillets into the sharp corners so that they are safe to use and to make the wheel mount look much better.

  8. Step 8: Finish

    And we are done!
