Show off your skills and solve real design problems
CyDesign challenges you to create CAD models of a passenger car.
CyDesign Labs is building a detailed physics based modeling and simulation environment and seeks
great looking components to populate a library of components to use in this simulated environment.
CyDesign Labs is in need of CAD surface models of different components that would be part of a car.
The challenge is that the final designs must not replicate existing, trademark and copyright protected
components, and must be an entire set of components.
Given a list of basic automobile components, a set of basic images and basic specs (see below), can you
produce a set of surface models that are rendered into small, 3D CAD visual files? If so, cash is in your
skills.
Submitted entries for each set must include models of each components listed in that specific set; entries which do not have the requested 3D CAD visuals and models for each component of the set will not be considered.
Each set has five different models to be provided. Four sets have the same type (wheels/tires, engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions); one set has multiple types (set 5).
The following car components must be modeled and rendered:
SET 1
Wheel and Tire Combinations (one model and visual rendering of each, 5 total as a set)
• High Performance Racing Tire with Aluminum Wheel - 245/40 16 tire size
• High Performance, Studded Racing Tire with Steel Wheel - 17 in, steel wheel, P245/65R17 tire size.
• Wagon Wheel with metal rim - R17 “wheel/tire size”.
• Common Passenger Tire/Wheel - 17-in. 5-spoke alloy wheels with P215/45R17 tire size.
• Common Bicycle Tire/Wheel - ISO 559 mm, 26x1.0 in to 26x2.5 in, found on most modern mountain bikes.
SET 2
Engines (one model and visual rendering of each engine, 5 total as a set)
• Front mount, Inline 6 Gasoline Engine, approximately 3 liter displacement.
• Front mount, Inline 6 Gasoline Engine with Turbocharger, approximately 2.5 liter
displacement.

• Typical transmission found in Group B Rally car: 5-speed manual, AP twin plate
paddle clutch with cerrametallic linings.
• Typical transmission:5-speed manual, mid size, 4 door, passenger car size.
• Typical transmission: 7-speed automatic, mid size, 4 door, SUV vehicle size.
• CVT, compact car, 4 door, passenger car size.
• Bulldozer transmission, capable of having: a) Planetary gear and multiple-disc clutch with hydraulically actuated and forced lubrication, with 3 forward and 3 reverse speeds.
SET 5
Other Car Components (5 total components as a set)
• Auto Body Frame, typical of those found in Group B Rally Cars
• Transaxles (one model and visual rendering of each)
- 4 wheel drive (aka AWD), typical of those found in Group B Rally Cars
- 2 wheel drive
• Typical Rally Car Suspension (one model and visual rendering of each):
- Front: independent, double wishbones, twin coil springs and telescopic
dampers, anti-roll bar.
- Rear: independent, double wishbones, twin coil springs
dampers, anti-roll bar, adjustable toe control link.
Each component in the set should be rendered into an individual 3D Graphic image size of approximately 256 pixels by 256 pixels size; submitted file sizes much larger will not be considered.
Each component model can be done in any CAD software, but entries must be submitted as a STEP, .obj, and .png file type for each component in the set. Entries without each file type for each component in the set will not be considered.
The 3D CAD models for each component in each set should have:
• Only external surfaces modeled and rendered; no internal surfaces/components needed/required.
• Mono-chromatic coloring with minimal shading required; do not need complex, multi-light source shading.
• One axis of rotation.
• Uploading CAD files of rendered models without permission to your GrabCAD profile is not allowed.
• The submissions will be judged on realism, creativity and composition.
• Each component in the set that is visualized must not replicate existing or previously produced, recognizable, components which are trademark and/or copyright protected by their respective owners.
The competition is open to everyone; public entries only.
One engineer can submit several entries, but no more than one will win a prize.
Tag your rendered set with “Car Component Challenge” when uploading it to GrabCAD to make it easier to find.
Each component in the set should be rendered into an individual 3D Graphic image size of approximately 256 k pixels by 256 k pixels size; submitted file sizes much larger will not be considered.
Each component model can be done in any CAD software, but entries must be submitted as a STEP, .obj, and .png file type for each component in the set. Entries without each file type for each component in the set will not be considered.
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition.
Only models uploaded through this challenge page here will participate in the competition.
The competition ends 10/29/12.
The contest sponsor has the right to use the winning entry for marketing purposes and becomes owner of the winning design.
$1,000 cash + CyDesign Labs T-Shirt (L or XL) for most realistic, best looking 3D CAD models of components provided for each set. 5 distinct sets are listed for creation, so 5 first prize awards will be given.
2nd Prize: $500 cash + CyDesign Labs T-Shirt (L or XL). 5 distinct sets are listed for creation, so 5 second prize awards will be given.
Submissions will be judged upon timeliness of submittal, accuracy of 3D models relative to the requirements and rules noted above.
The judges will be comprised of CyDesign and GrabCAD staff.
CyDesign Labs is developing a physics-based modeling system that will let engineers quickly assess design options and continuously test against requirements during the early design phase. Should the vehicle have conventional or hybrid drive? How will thermal loads affect an implanted medical device? Providing answers to these questions early in the design results in a more robust and reliable system.
CyDesign Studio, the flagship product, is a the only model-based design optimization platform with integrated requirements management that enables organizations to design complex systems with better, faster results.

What does 256k by 256k mean? I hope its not 256000x256000 pixels...
Romano Gaspari over 11 years ago
does high performance tire mean slick one?
marcos over 11 years ago
i dont really get what we have to do .... do we have to model all that parts ? or just a set ? or just one part of each set ?
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Comed,
it is supposed to be "256 x 256 pixels". the "k" is not supposed to be there and will be removed.
David Hinz over 11 years ago
marcos,
we are asking for submittals by set. so, a person can just model one particular set (ex: the wheel/tires) and submitted the set (5 models) for the challenge.
a person (or team) could also decide to model multiple sets and thus compete for multiple parts of the challenge.
remember, though, each set is comprised of 5 models each.
hope that helps.

how many mounting hole wheels must have got?

these contests specs are getting more and more tedious to read through.
CCG over 11 years ago
No offence but this is not a contest...this is hard work for nothing....i wish i had money to make my company...and then put challenges to grabcad so it would result a great design paid with low price and high profit for me.Good luck with this gent's.
Ibrahim Sanih Ahmed over 11 years ago
mmmh... haha... i was going to write up a few questions regarding the reqs. but then i saw the deadline!!! hehehe... talk about rushing something...
Romano Gaspari over 11 years ago
once again: how many mounting holes for the wheels and the disc brake? there is no support for this challenge and the requirements aren't clear enough!
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Romano: Please use 5 hole designs for the wheels; high performance tire should have some tread; no slicks, as those will not work in environments where the road suface is not super smooth.
All,
Please note, the visual size is 256 x 256 pixels; the requirement of 256 k x 256 k is wrong and will be changed ASAP.
Romano Gaspari over 11 years ago
the same 5 holes for the break discs?
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Hi Romano, You bet, the same 5 holes for the disc brake components as well would be great. Thanks for asking specific questions and participating in our challenge.
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Marcos, apologize for the delayed response, but wow, nice wagon wheel!
Yes, each of the 4 sets has a crazy component (wagon wheel, lawn mower engine, mountain bike disc brake, bulldozer transmission).
Variety is key for our component library, so having a crazy component helps to illuminate that capability of our product.

is there always gonna be a winner in these contests? or if the customer doesnt like any , maybe nobody wins..? yes or no?
Jordan Waite over 11 years ago
why can't i upload my designs?
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Marko Lukac - nice set of rims, but remember, the set to be created as a valid submittal needs to all of the items listed, and the wheels should include tires:
Keep the entries coming!
David Hinz over 11 years ago
John,
I am confident the GrabCAD community will provide designs and submittals that meet our requirements and be compelling enough to determine a winner for each set requested.

Feedback and questions addressed:
Tomas - like the direction you are going for the SET 1 entry - all the wheels/tire combo's across the different formats.
Santoo- Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members.
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Tomas,
To your question on wagon wheels, we prefer wood wheels with metal rims, similar to your first link. For vehicle modeling purposes, it allows our mechanical engineers the ability to construct a complex model of a wood structure with a metal rim, vs. an all metal design.
David Hinz over 11 years ago
Om Prakash Yadav
A disc brake with rotor would be great. see http://www.expertcarcare.com/maintenance-guide/brake-system. some folks only have the actual pads, which are useful as well. we will be looking at the entire set as well as individual parts.
Size of vehicle?
850kg to 960kg would be a typical weight.

@Garrett and to all participants. We just noticed this and we'll get some more clarification from CyDesigns. Obviously we should follow all rules and requirements - fairness first. Please be patient and send me a private message if you have any concerns or questions. I will be sure have your feedback heard by all.

@Arfi'an I will contact you via private message and hope you will reconsider.
Sara Sigel over 11 years ago
Thank you to our community! You pointed out a mistake in the results and we have corrected our error. We apologize, a winner can take home only one prize in any challenge. For that reason @Tomas will no longer be the 2nd place winner of Set 3. We talked it over with him and apologized. There is a silver lining in this mistake. Now, we have a new winner to celebrate! Please congratulate @Garret Taylor for getting the second prize on Set 3. Thank you again for letting us know and for being patient while we straightened things out.
