Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Swedish super sportscar manufacturer Koenigsegg is redesigning their front and rear hood release handles and they have a challenge for you. Come up with something light, strong and beautiful and your solution might end up on one of the fastest cars on the planet.
They need a new, bespoke and lightweight solution to replace the standard one used at the moment. Current solution (front & rear) consists of a release handle and a back plate held together with one bolt and a plastic snap-fit. The back plate legs are fitted with rubber profiles to increase friction to rocker B-surface. New handle should be interchangeable with the current carry over component and should improve ergonomics and clearance to the door hinge. The new version can be a release handle assembly of any kind as long as the boundaries remain the same (rocker, door, dashboard carcass etc.).
Both front and rear handles mount to carbon fibre panels which can vary in thickness. You have to take this into account when designing new handles! The carbon fiber panel including paint and clearcoat have a final thickness of 3,5+/- 0.5mm. Also have in mind that carbon fiber B-sides are not tooled surfaces.
Light weight design
Materials - aluminum or carbon fiber or both.
Ergonomic - lever should be easy to grab
Interchangeable with the current carry over lever (It doesn't have to look anything like the current part - it just cannot be bigger)
Improved clearance to the door hinge
Simple enough to manufacture
Simple enough to assemble
Current standard handle is spring loaded
Lever has to be able to pull the cable at least 20 mm
Lever should look like it belongs to a super car not a family saloon
Do not stare blind at that currently used standard release handle assembly and the back bracket (you might not even need a bracket > saves weight). Only use them for critical references
Please keep in mind the finger loads - the lever gearing should be similar or better (lighter) than the current handle solution.
Winning design will be chosen based on the function, style and weight.
The competition is open to everyone
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize money will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members
You can submit several designs
Only models uploaded to GrabCAD library will participate in the competition
Only models uploaded through this challenge page here will participate in the competition
Tag your model with “koenigsegg” to make it easier to find.
You may upload a private model but you need to share access to indrek@grabcad.com
Privately uploaded models will be made public after the competition deadline
Models can be done in any CAD software as long as a STEP or IGES files are also uploaded
Competition starts: 21st of September, 2011
Competition ends: 5th of October, 2011
Competition winner will be announced in GrabCAD’s blog no later than 10th of October
Koenigsegg is a Swedish manufacturer of high-performance sports cars based in Ängelholm. The company was founded in 1994 in Sweden by Christian von Koenigsegg, with the intention of producing a world-class supercar. Many years of development and prototyping led to the company's first street-legal production car delivery in 2002.
In 2006, Koenigsegg began production of the CCX, which uses an engine created especially for that vehicle. The CCX is street-legal in most countries, including the United States.
Apart from developing manufacturing and selling the Koenigsegg line of supercars, Koenigsegg is also involved in "green technology" development programs, including the CCXR ("Flower Power") flexfuel supercar. Koenigsegg is also active in development programs when it comes to plug-in electric cars' systems and next-generation combustion engine technologies.
In March 2009 the Koenigsegg CCXR was chosen by Forbes to be one of the ten most beautiful cars in history.
In December 2010 the Koenigsegg Agera won the prestigious BBC Top Gear Hypercar of the Year Award.

SWEEET. Is the rear hood release in that orientation to be operated while standing next to the vehicle?

what about an additional price?
-5 hours of full speed in a brand new koenigsegg, a set of
high performance tires und fuel on the nordschleife nürburgring?

"Interchangeable with the current carry over lever"
Is this a hard rule??

better to ask not to get a boat with: /
can be change the arrangement or assignment applies only to design the handle?
Tanel Välja over 12 years ago
How about the top 6 people can get access to their factory in Sweden and see how they are making these awesome beasts?
Dassault over 12 years ago
as an option for a prize! a good suggestion!
Shridharan over 12 years ago
Can we upload t model only in solidworks. Is t STEP file s necessary...??
Dassault over 12 years ago
there are some questions:
1 - is it possible to change the design, but use the same hole on the car
2 - changing only a pen, or you can change everything, but maintaining the requirements of Karl
3 - interchangeability is a strict factor, or I can step back a little
for the quick response will be appreciated!
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
I was wondering if we are only designing the handle, or the handle and pocket as well. I have a new idea but it requires both pieces to be replaced but still bolt into the existing package. Is it possible to get some clarification on which pieces are "fair game".
thanks!
Jonathan Robson over 12 years ago
Thank you for the update to the requirements, makes it clear now :)
Back to the drawing board, lol.
Dassault over 12 years ago
the rules have changed, it's good. But google translator translates badly:
- I can change the handle and pocket
- can I use my system open
I understood correctly??
someone tell me what I understand correctly:)
Jonathan Robson over 12 years ago
You can change what you want, as long as it is not bigger than the current system and functions within the means, I think basically don't change the cable system for instance to a solid linking system and don't make something bigger than the Volvo system.
Dassault over 12 years ago
COOL ^ _ ^
thanks a lot, so I understood correctly:)
I think after such responses will boom!
good luck to all colleagues.
Let the best man win!

Thanks for the update!!!!

I'm new to grab cad and I saw a lot of sweet models so far. But how do you get the specifications on the sizes of the peices to which to design for a challenge? I downloaded the specifications but didnt see anything but pictures.
John Evans over 12 years ago
I uploaded the Door hinge as an Inventor Assy with Positions added. Easier to work with. DM Projects
Greg over 12 years ago
Jason, the original file is in CatiaV5 so if you have Catia that will work. Otherwise you require a STP translator to import the file into your current CAD system. Hope that helps
Jason Weber over 12 years ago
Well that poses a problem. I've never worked with Catia and I dont know how to get an STP translator. I'm currently taking a class in college. I could see if they have something there. Would there be any GrabCAD engineers that would translate something like that for me or is stuff like that not done through GrabCAD?
Kristina Narusk over 12 years ago
Jason, if there are no volunteers to help you out, I suggest to post a question to the <a href="http://grabcad.com/questions">Q&A</a> section about what's the easiest-to-use STP translator and how to do the importing. You will learn and others, too :)
Danny Tasmakis over 12 years ago
Question: Is it possible to find out roughly how much pulling force is required on the lever to open the hood?
Shridharan over 12 years ago
Is there any specific dimensions on which we have to work....? am a begeinner, anyone answer fr tis.....
Cemal Uslu over 12 years ago
i agree ,more informations are needed.. a few dimensions maybe...
Danny Tasmakis over 12 years ago
As for dimensions, I believe if you stay within the bounds of the current Volvo leaver you'll be right.
Shridharan over 12 years ago
but where to get that volvo lever dimension...? Is t already given here..
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
Shridharan, you get the parts in the download.
Jon Gunner over 12 years ago
Hi all, great effort so far. Please keep in mind the finger loads - the lever gearing should be similar or better (lighter) than the current handle solution.
Diego Montero over 12 years ago
The current lever multiplies the finger loads almost in a 3:1 rate :D
I have to come up with a new idea now... hahaha
Shridharan over 12 years ago
what we Have to desgn, only the lever..? Or both the lever & housing..?
Diego Montero over 12 years ago
Both.. Take a look at the entries people already send and you'll understand :D
John Evans over 12 years ago
Diego, yeah I'm in the same boat. New design...
Jon Gunner over 12 years ago
Very impressed so far. There will be a follow-on challenge once this one is closed. Keep up the good work!
Brian Donovan over 12 years ago
hello. I'm new here. I just uploaded a model/images for the Koenigsegg challenge. My entry doesn't seem to be here. Is there a delay?
Stephen Smyth over 12 years ago
Im having trouble opening up the Step file. Could someone save it as a solidworks 2009 model by any chance. Or is it even needed for the contest?
Thanks
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
There was a big explosion of entries today! Good luck to everyone! There are dozens of great and unique designs here. I'm sure the judges have their work cut out for them.
Shridharan over 12 years ago
At now its showing...."About 7 hours more"...I uploaded a model,bt it s nt displayed in Entries...anyone answer pls..
Troy over 12 years ago
I don't see one of my models either. It was there yesterday but now its gone.
John Evans over 12 years ago
Absolutely beautiful designs. Makes mine looks, well, like they belong in a barn. :-p While many don't meet various criteria, almost all are fantastic.
Josh Mings over 12 years ago
Hi everyone. Concerning models that were uploaded, it's likely from a timestamp-file update difference. If you update a file the timestamp also updates and can make the model disappear from the results. This is intended, but I know some may simply be adding missing data. If your model is not display, please email me at Josh@GrabCAD.com and we will discuss. Thanks.
Nic over 12 years ago
Some good designs, just surprised no one went with the Koenigsegg Ghost emblem.
Jon Gunner over 12 years ago
Just like to thank everyone for their participation. I am very impressed with the level of quality overall. We will review all models next week and announce the winner in due course.
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
Thanks for the opportunity Jon, Koenigsegg and grabCAD!
Troy over 12 years ago
Its past the 10th, did I miss the announcing of the winners or has it not been posed yet?
Matt Perez over 12 years ago
Troy, Jon said they would review the models this week. I don't know that they gave a date but the announcement will be on the Blog.
Jon Gunner over 12 years ago
Hi All,
I have spent the past few days downloading the models and reviewing them according to the following criteria;
function
package
installation
materials
engineering
aesthetics
None of the entrants have fulfilled all criteria set in the specification so it has been difficult to work out our top six. We will release our decision Thursday 13th October (tomorrow) to Grabcad who will compile with their results and the winners will be duly announced.
Tim M over 12 years ago
Jon & GrabCAD - Thanks for the opportunity. It was a fun.
Cheers,
Tim
