Show off your skills and solve real design problems
Create an accessory that is 100% 3D printable that can help make your commute a little more fun or easier. Think of a product that is innovative and useful for those windy and rainy mornings, or that helps you bike on roads with heavy traffic, or something that will make your bike look or function way better than everyone else’s. This is a challenge just for fun so let your imagination soar.
1. Make your commute easier
2. Improve the capabilities of your bike
3. Make it more fun to ride.
Pick the one that you can design!
While the accessory needs to be completely 3D printed, you can use the desired tools (screws, nuts, etc) to attach it to a bike.
We will pick three finalists for each of the above goals.
1st Place "Make your commute easier": $200 + GrabCAD Swag
1st Place "Improve the capabilities of your bike": $200 + GrabCAD Swag
1st Place "Make it more fun to ride": $200 + GrabCAD Swag
Judging Criteria:
1. Printability
2. Design
3a. How it affects my commute
3b. How it improved the capabilities of the bike
3c. Just for fun
4. Optimal Weight (not too heavy, not too light, just right)
5. Ease of attachment
Prefered Submission file formats:
- STEP (single part or assembly)
- Solidworks files (single part or assembly)
- Final design STL (single part of assembly)
- Renderings / Images (Required)
- VRML (If part has color related information)
Printer being used: F370 (FDM)
PolyJet can be used if the part is purely aesthetic
Dimensions of the printer: 14 in x10 in x14 in.
*You can only use additional materials to attach it to the bike: strap, screws, bolts, tape etc.*

Does the accessory have to be printed as one piece? Can it be printed separately and assembled together after printing?
Noe Avila over 7 years ago
so I understand the pieces can be separated and screws can be used to join
Olivia over 7 years ago
Hey Kaan Korkmaz, The accessory has to be able to be printed as one piece!
Kristie McKibben over 7 years ago
Can you have an assembled final part made up of different 3d printed parts? By the submissions uploaded it looks like you can. But I just wanted to verify since I was confused after the above comments.
chris fredette over 7 years ago
Can you add a rubberband? Otherwise I'd have to add a leaf spring that would not be ideal.
Daniel Whitaker over 7 years ago
I created an innovative assembly with 4 parts that can be fastened with screws and nuts. I already finished the design and was wondering where in the rules where it states it has to be one solid part and also if it is not, will I be disqualified from the challenge??
Kaan Korkmaz over 7 years ago
@Kristie McKibben , @Daniel Whitaker I believe @Olivia has already answered your questions above in response to my comment.
Ritviz Doshi over 7 years ago
can we submit multiple designs ?
Daniel Whitaker over 7 years ago
Will I not be considered for a prize if it is multiple parts? That response did not answer my questions.
Lance Skelly over 7 years ago
Can a previously uploaded model be entered into this challenge?
Zulfiqar Islam over 7 years ago
Can we have an standard model of bicycle?
Component size, attachment mode will vary on the bicycle model.
Olivia over 7 years ago
Hi Lance Skelly, as long as it's yours.
Olivia over 7 years ago
Daniel Whitaker, The part must be able to be printed as an assembly. The only time you can use nuts/bots/attachment accessories is for attaching the 3D printed part to the bicycle.
Nathaniel Andresmooi over 7 years ago
For example if you print two halves of your assembly and you join them with a screw and nut over top of the handle bars. You cannot have layer upon layer of screwed on parts. As I understand it.
Spas Spasov over 7 years ago
What if I make a whole bicycle frame that is not possible to be created with other than 3D printing
Spas Spasov over 7 years ago
I mean.. what is the maximum size?
Kaleb Tuinstra over 7 years ago
Since the F370 can print with ABS, and QSR support, will it be used? or do we need to design it to print without support?

Flying Pedals
The idea is fantastic. You can develop this idea for connecting with bicycle straps.
A sensational gadget, but in my opinion for the injection molding method - not for 3D printing. The only ardument for 3D printing - prototype execution (single execution).
In my opinion - the model does not show the potential of the 3D printing method.
Marcin Frydrych over 7 years ago
Free Size Holder
Very good presentation!
The idea is interesting, although the availability and diversity of handles is huge.
You can develop this idea with an openwork structure (weight+). This will positively affect the emphasis on the use of the 3D printing method.
At the moment, the model does not show the potential of the 3D printing method.
A useful gadget, but in my opinion it can be done with a different method - not for 3D printing. The only ardument for 3D printing - prototype execution (single execution).
The argument that the detail is very simple to print 3D does not appeal to me. In my opinion - it is not meant to be simple :) It has to be spectacular.
I'm sorry if I write incorrectly.

Air Pump Integrated Bicycle
Cool :)
If you turn the action (valve) you get an air shock!
I want this! It's sad that it's just a concept.
Marcin Frydrych over 7 years ago
FLEXiBiKE
In my opinion, a great model for 3D printing (visually).
Positive impression.
Will it be strong enough?
Maybe - printing in a more complex position. Stretch when installing the phone.
Good job!!!
Marcin Frydrych over 7 years ago
Windshield Handlebar
That would be very useful to me!
Nothing more nothing less!
Good job!

Telescopic Mud Fender
Really clever!
But, like many others...
...in my opinion for the injection molding method - not for 3D printing. The only ardument for 3D printing - prototype execution (single execution).
In my opinion - the model does not show the potential of the 3D printing method.
But, YES!
It can be printed 3D - if it is the only criterion.
I'm sorry if I write incorrectly.

Congratulations to all Finalists!
I am wondering if the work will actually work as I go through this challenge.
And that can be an opportunity I think the relevance of bicycles and 3d printing Many thanks to grabcad!! Now, I will wait for the judges' choice. ٩( ᐛ )و

I find it amusing that one of the finalists doesn't even connect or have connections to a bicycle which completely contradicts the whole "Bike Accessory" aspect of the challenge. Simply amazing!

1. Bike pouch by Vener Basical
Looking at the other finalists - it forms part of the scheme. Great idea! To me, too easy for 3D printing. You can buy the right material and cut it out :) The idea itself deserves to be congratulated!
2. Mock Gauges for a children's bike ;P hehe

DHANASEKAR VINAYAGAMOORTHY over 7 years ago
@joe cole Bicycle bubble machine on thingiverse is not mine and more over this is not that model this model is entirely different from that one because it operates similar to windmill concept.
i was impressed with that fun accessories while seeing the image i have mentioned it on my description also.
and you can show many similar models but engineering is making design efficient and simple.
if you want to consider in that view then all the models in the contest are already exists including all types of holder, all types of fun equipments, pedals, handlebar etc.
it is about how simple you are making it to 3d print it.
Have a great day
Marcin Frydrych over 7 years ago
Thank you Joe Cole
I did not think that people could copy so. Shocked.
DHANASEKAR VINAYAGAMOORTHY
"... all the models in the contest are already exists ..."
Not all accessories can be found. Find my Mock Gauges & Ignition Switch for kids or other as you can ...
There are ideas and there are copies. This is a competition - a bit of creativity.
"it is about how simple you are making it to 3d print it"
I do not agree. In my opinion, it is not meant to be easy. It's supposed to be WOW! :)
In 3D printing, I like that you can do something that can not be done any other method (other method is more wide complex and complicated)
[I'm sorry if I write incorrectly]
DHANASEKAR VINAYAGAMOORTHY over 7 years ago
@marcin i commented to joe msg because my model is creative and different from the one he showed so before commenting first go through the design. if i want to copy that design i would have just uploaded that stl file which he showed..
and as per the competitions we can upload anything which is our design if you show my design or model i can i agree that i have copied some where.. thats is the reason i uploaded with all native formats..
also i appreciated joe's comment because everyone has the right to express their view and you don't have rights to point my name and express your view. if you have something in mind express on your point view only.
anyway have a great day..

Looking at all the finalists I feel that the flying wings has quite a good potential to make it into the market as a viable product, it has a simple design concept, looks easy to manufacture with 3D print technology and with the addition of colour(s) such as flag motif's would appeal to the younger age group market of 3 - 8 year old's. If they could be manufactured with some sort of reflective finish would even be an additional side safety feature. A possible win win.
Marcin Frydrych over 7 years ago
If you were to produce it.
What would be cheaper?
3D printing or injection molding process
In my opinion, in this case, 3d printing only for the prototype :)
BUT...
I agree with you - "flying wings" can win :)
(looking at the judges' descriptions)

3D printing is amazing!!!
"This opens up a new world and can not be machined or molded from plastic with traditional manufacturing methods. Able to be created as a part of multiple-generation parts. Can be 3D printed."

Good luck in design.
