Model parts should fit, be scaled to or be cut into sections of no greater than 28.5 x 15.3 x 15.5 cm.
Assembly can be via snap fit, bolts, screws or glue. See www.makerbot.com for more information.
Models can be done in any CAD software as long as .step or .iges and .stl files are also uploaded. Renders/Screenshots are also required.
Tag your model with “replicator2”. Only entries with valid tag will participate!
The challenge is open to everyone except GrabCAD and MakerBot employees.
Team entries are welcome. In case of team win, prize will be transferred to team leader who is solely responsible for splitting it among team members.
You can submit several entries.
Only entries uploaded to GrabCAD library through this challenge page here will participate in the competition.
Challenge participants are also strongly encouraged to post on www.Thingiverse.com – where .stl files should be posted under (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/). See this example : www.thingiverse.com/thing:31686

Martijn Loonen about 12 years ago
i really like 3d printing and have a fair amount of experience with it. I was wondering if the models needed to be print readyv
Robert Steiner about 12 years ago
Yes - the models should be designed for assembly and the individual parts suitable for 3D printing. The file format for 3D printing is .stl
Alfonso Gonzalez about 12 years ago

Martijn Loonen about 12 years ago
Are there more design guidelines than a wall thinknes and max. size?
Robert Steiner about 12 years ago
@ Mohammad - .stl files please.
Robert Steiner about 12 years ago
@ Martijin - parts should be designed for assembly - either by pin, snap fit, glue or fasteners. We are open to creativity on your design(s).

marcos about 12 years ago
Model parts should fit, be scaled to or be cut into sections of no greater than 28.5 x 15.3 x 15.5 cm.
Robert Steiner about 12 years ago
@vaibhav - The finished model can be any size. Individual parts are limited by the size of the build plate.

Hi. Can Makerbot use transparent materials?
Alexei Kositsin about 12 years ago
Do i miss something or this challenge is to make a future car (2040) ??? I just saw spider and cutter... ?!
Sara Sigel about 12 years ago
Yes @Alexei you should create futuristic transport - whether that means a car, bike, personal plane, or whatever is up for you to decide. Write out a description of why you chose what you did in the description. Have fun!
Marcus Wolschon about 12 years ago
Why do all these challanges want us to break the tagging function in Thingiverse?
Car-models have nothing to do with "replicator2". They are no bug-fixes, improvements or replacement parts for that printer and thus should never have a tage labeled like that!
Also GrabCAD is missing a way to specify the license of your design.
..oh and "sign in to comment" leads you to the start-page, not back to this page to comment on.
Sara Sigel about 12 years ago
@Marcus we use all member feedback to help make GrabCAD better. Thank you for letting us know! Sorry about your frustration with tagging. You can feel free to come to me or submit an "I wish this page" from anywhere on the site if you come across any other issues.
Vaibhav Bhujbal about 12 years ago
@Robert- I still didn't understand . Please tell me more in details :)
Alfonso Gonzalez about 12 years ago
@Nenad Negrievski, no they just have transluscent but no transparent plastics, i think, check their webpage!
Ioannis Skarlatakis about 12 years ago
I was wondering if you can print on one hit a set of parts (ex. Shaft & bearing) with the appropriate tolerance to allow any DOF (Degrees of freedov :) )...
Ioannis Skarlatakis about 12 years ago
Additionally what is the smallest diameter of a spring that can be build To be more precise I am looking for the diameter of the wire (I presume 1.5 mm but I want to be sure...)
dano vinson about 12 years ago
How does one submit a model (or project) that is already posted here? Would changing the tag to "replicator2" on the project enter the contest?
Ioannis Skarlatakis about 12 years ago
Is there any specific reason that I can not see my submission???
I tagged it as "replicator2" and submitted it through the challenge page....
Is there any kind of delay??? Please advise asap...
Thanks in advance

pedders about 12 years ago
design engineers are much more likely than mechanical engineers, like me, in this type of competition ... they have better tools to make models more attractive ... because this contest has nothing to do with the real possibilities of the car of the future, but is merely a design competition, which awards more attractive design so that the real possibilities of the technology ... I guess that's something that designers do not have: the mental block of what is possible and what is not ... in this sense, never will win in a contest of this kind ...
Ioannis Skarlatakis about 12 years ago
@Sara Sigev Hi there I hope you are fine could you please update on what happened with the last models as they still don't appear in the list...
Additionally something happened and the models reduced from 138 to 135 this morning how can you explain that !!!
I put my trust on you and the GrabCad team...
Many thanks
Luis Cordoba about 12 years ago
Great contest, good luck to everyone:D!!!
Bryan Morris about 12 years ago
You guys are some seriously creative individuals, MakerBot's going to have a hard time with this one! :D
Chris about 12 years ago
@Pedders - You underestimate where a real designer comes from. We have a great background in both engineering AND art. We are able to make functional products that work superbly and look amazing at the same time. After all form follows function. Yes we are allowed to take some creative license, be we are not tied down by what is possible, allowing us to dream in new directions.
Guillaume Cabandé about 12 years ago
I can't find my project in the list while I have ulploaded it (http://grabcad.com/library/sealin) in due time. Can you help me ?
Ioannis Skarlatakis about 12 years ago
@Guillaume Cabandv Well I don't know what happened & what causes that problems but still no one reply to my maseges ...
Alexei Kositsin about 12 years ago
Just wait. they will sattle it up. not the first time.
Ioannis Skarlatakis about 12 years ago
Happy to hear it...
Sara Sigel about 12 years ago
@Dano You have to upload it through the "submit entry" button and add the "replicator2" tag. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please note that if you delete your model you'll lose all likes and points associated with it - maybe something new is the way to go.
Sara Sigel about 12 years ago
Hi everyone, there will be a delay as the challenge comes to an end with your entry showing up in the Results tab. Just be sure to upload through the "submit entry" button and include the tag "replicator2". Once the Challenge is over, I will refresh the entries and you should then see yours. This could take up to 24 hours. If you're worried, you can send me a PM with a link to your entry before the end of the Challenge and I will check all of them for you. Good luck and sorry for the inconvenience!
Sara Sigel about 12 years ago
I have updated the entries and your work should now be included. Please send me a message at sara@grabcad.com if you do not. Winners will be announced by February 11!
Kevin Put about 12 years ago
Thanks for fixing it and for the info Sara. Let the waiting begin :-)
Driton Z almost 12 years ago
Its 11th of february... :)
Alexei Kositsin almost 12 years ago
Yes, finally. It will take day more to finish. As i remember Sara's msg. Good luck to all
Ridwan Sept almost 12 years ago
congrats to all winners :D
Ioannis Skarlatakis almost 12 years ago
Congrats to all winners... I am not really sure what the main criteria for the selection were or the order of the winning models but never mind....
Let's stick on that this Challenge had a lot of innovative models with good ideas...
Honestly, I was expecting the “Hybrid Transportation System”, the “Cheetah quadricycle” or the “Saesta” to be in the winning list… but again that is my opinion… ;)
However, I am really happy about “LB1” to be included I really enjoy that Model!!!
Congrats once more to OMEGA… Looking forward to see pictures from your actual 3D printed model!!!
P.S. The story on 2039 was so Awesome! (Circular magnetoplamadynamic Thruster) Seriously!!!! ;)

Tim Gueller almost 12 years ago
Google search minority report hovership. Look at alpha, then read rule 5.
Ioannis Skarlatakis almost 12 years ago
@Tim Gueller You have a good point on what you are saying... Why don't you try to contact a member of GrabCad (Sara Sigel) to check their opinion... I don't know Tim maybe we miss something!!! ;)
Sara Sigel almost 12 years ago
We are looking into it with the MakerBot judges. Thank you @Tim and @Ioannis
marcos almost 12 years ago
very nice work, and congratulations to all the participants except "the pirat winner"
Driton Z almost 12 years ago
Tim Gueller, good point! Its ok for the people that come on the 45th place, but not the winner.
Sara Sigel almost 12 years ago
After lots of consideration (thank you for reaching out to us), the judges and GrabCAD decided the design is 'similar' but we don't believe infringes on the Minority Report model. So without further ado, congratulations to all winners. This was such an inventive and creative Challenge, I enjoyed all the entries!
Ioannis Skarlatakis almost 12 years ago
Obviously it was just a funny challenge... But everyone have to admit that the judgement it was even more funny...
@Sara forgive me if I am rude, as it is not in my intention. You will just find me on the other side of this decision.
As a matter of fact if it was about the copyrights of both models that have been submitted by the same user, he would have been in the court and you know that.
Apparantly the similarity is so big that touch the plagiarism!
Regards
IOANNIS
P.S. 1
Just a little bit disappointed...from the facts that doesn't match on what you believe as a committee.
Nothing more to comment and thank you for reconsidering a different point of view (Tim's).
P.S. 2
Hey look at me I am smiling again...take care.
Chris Dermody almost 12 years ago
Unless, as per the comment referencing rule2, (which is now deleted) that the submitter was part of the team that worked on the models for minority report, and had permission from relevant copyright owners to submit to the competition, then no rules were broken really were they?
matthew gueller almost 12 years ago
I think the quality of the models of the winners was pretty good for a competition like this. Nevertheless, I do believe that if someone introduced a product to market that looked similiar to a Makerbot Replicator 2X, Makerbot would most likely challenge them on it.
In my opionin, there is some lose of credibility on the judges for not recognizing and working around the issue
Pt the question out there and let the community decide. GradCad is a social site, let the users vote and see what the community has to say.
Scott Bruins almost 12 years ago
I don't like online voting. It becomes a contest to see who has the most friends willing to sign up for the site and not who has the best design. I much prefer to have a panel of "expert" judges. I think the contest went well and the winning designs are very good.
marcos almost 12 years ago
mmm what if just everybody wait for the next similar challenge to do our best ..... and between us the participant check randomly one model once in a while, then before the day of results if someone see something suspicious tell it to the grab cad staff..... maybe is time to move on ..... the winner was already designated .....
Alfonso Gonzalez almost 12 years ago
I would like to know why @omega doesn't reply to the Grabcad community... also questioning if he's really a designer or just an ideas borrower, we know as he said there are pradigmas or archetypes in common, which are the basis for analogues and holomogues in everything, for example in comparative biology. But here, personally, it's too, ya know whata mean!
Let's him (@omega) encourage to answer aobut this topic.
Cheers to everybody, and congrats.
Miguel Riego almost 12 years ago
It is really a shame to see that the winning entry is a copy of one of the Star Wars Space Pods and the second winner is nothing but the work of a kid with no design understanding of a transportation product There were MANY interesting and quite well though out ideas.that could had won. Congratulations to all the participants and really what a shame

3D printer just to market is relatively expensive, after all, is a technology that has just started, manufacturing cost is relatively high, after a period of time, technology is more and more popular, the price drop.
