You have one assembly group and you want to costomize some things such as change dimension, cut a shape, add a part etc. but you don't need interupt the existing one. Normal method >> You must save as exist assembly to be new assembly , and save as exist parts to be new parts and then replace all part from old part by new part in new assembly. Smart method >> Just replace name of part or assembly by New name as you want. Not require to open solidworks program. I will show you step by step.
