tips on creating path mates

Here are some things you can try;
-
Step 1:
First make a sub-assembly of a single link and shoe.
-
Step 2:
In your larger assembly with your path insert your sub-assembly and apply any mates needed.
-
Step 3:
Right click on your sub-assembly and open the "Component Properties" window.
-
Step 4:
Make sure the "Flexible" option is checked under "Solve as" and click "OK"
-
Step 5:
Right click on the sub-assembly in the feature tree and select "copy with mates"
This will allow you to select the mates (such as the ones to the path) which will be the same and then select the the mate (ie concentric to the pin) that will be different between each sub-assembly and just start clicking to insert them.
