Finlay, some new challenge!
Thomas Stokhof de Jong over 10 years ago
What an exciting new challenge! Is the task to make a new design or to mod the current razor crazy cart?
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
Yeah, new Challenge - let's see what you all can do with this one! @Thomas Stokhof de Jong the task is to modify the current cart and then go crazy with renderings and animations.

Mmmm nop... I will lost 2 or 3 weeks learning Solidedge. This challenge should be for students.
Петар Трлајић over 10 years ago
guys I am gonna participate so you can all give up righte now!! :D
just kidding, wich you all best luck and one question for Sara.
in description they say that we have to render the model using intergration, I mean there is no way that I am going to delete my ST5 to install ST7 for 45days just to use integration, so is it ok to render it by using Keyshot normaly?
Thanks,
Petar
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
@Петар Трлајић I love the excitement! You can use KeyShot for the renders and animations. The integration makes it easier for those using ST7 but you're not limited to it if you own both. I can't wait to see what you're working on!
Петар Трлајић over 10 years ago
thanks Sara, as the rendering with my PC can take 10 days I better get started immediatly... :D

why the restriction of solid edge usage ?
this is unfair and a cheap way for marketing their products

Restriction to solid edge?
Pffftt Marketing at its finest huh?
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
Think of trying out Solid Edge as a chance to learn something new. We're offering a base Crazy Cart model to work off of to help lower the time needed to get started. Last Challenge, we encouraged Solid Edge/KeyShot users and those new to the software to team up and create something together.
Philip LaRoach over 10 years ago
Does a parasolid count as a Solidedge file? That's the filetype available for download so I thought it might be worth asking.

Must be using by solid edge to this task ??
chaouki ben hassine over 10 years ago
hello
I could not get the license for solid edge although I filled the entire form present on the site except that there is not my country (Tunisia) so I put other.
if directory you can help me please.
thank you
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
@Philip LaRoach You should import the parasolid into Solid Edge, make your mods, and then export the new model as a native Solid Edge format (along with exporting a STEP version).
@project_118 Yes, that's right. Start with the Razor Crazy Cart File by downloading it from Razor USA Crazy Cart on GrabCAD. Be sure to use the official logos and decals provided there, as well. You should also download a 45-day trial version of Solid Edge at http://siemens.com/plm/try-solid-edge.
@chaouki ben hassine Try the number provided, 800-807-2200, or the support page at Solid Edge if you're having issues getting the download. Be sure to check that your browser allows downloads and try a different one when filling out the form.

Are jet engines allowed? Any way i'm in
Cadstorming over 10 years ago
Is it's possible to fit a sligthly more powerful motor in the available space? My design requires one for a reasonable performance and usability.
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
We've got some fun entries coming in! What are you thinking about for your entry???? Any trouble using the new softwares so far? Any teams forming? I have so many questions...
.
@Jeremy Hooter praveen kumar Part of the Challenge is giving a new software a try. So trying Solid Edge and KeyShot are a must. It's a great way to learn something new and add to your skill set.
@selwin lisand Mod that crazy cart like a jet! Go for it! But, the jet engine may be a little much for the cart to handle. Be sure to explain what you did and why.
@Cadstorming If you can find a way to make that work, then yes! Now that you say that, it makes me think of how cool it'd be to see one with a clear engine cover like an old hot rod. http://www.bongos.net.au/images/detailed/27/Greased_Lightning_08.jpg

In the "must include" it says a Keyshots animation is required. The version I downloaded from the link above doesn't include the animation functionality. Is this a requirement? If so is there a way to demo this?
Philip LaRoach over 10 years ago
I've also had problems uploading ST7 files, I'm only give the ST6 or lower option.
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
My Keyshot doesn't seem to have animations either.
Originally the "Animation Wizard" button was greyed out. I checked for updates, updated, and now I can click on the "Animation Wizard" button. But now it prompts me to "Upgrade to the full Animation module", which takes me to the Keyshot website to purchase it.
Am I supposed to get the 14 day trial so I can do the animations?
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
Okay, I found you need to do all the animation movements and such in a Solid Edge assembly, and then have it opened and rendered in Keyshot.
Wish I would have known that before watching all the Keyshot animation tutorial videos. Oh well.
Петар Трлајић over 10 years ago
first software I used in my career was SOLIDEDGE, now after viewing the crazy cart 1h in ST5 I give up...
it is so hard to work with SE after you use SolidWorks for 2 years... :(
Tommy Mueller over 10 years ago
As far as software: If you like Solidworks, you'll love this: http://www.onshape.com/
Tell them Tommy Mueller sent ya!
...
I think Solidedge proved too much of a learning adjustment to compete in this awesome challenge here, but those who have entered have done extremely well ;)
...
However, I guess there's still two weeks left to "buff" my SE skills!
Maybe, just maybe :)
Best of luck everyone!
Петар Трлајић over 10 years ago
SolidEdge is actually one great software, but you see I remember the time I was using it and competing as high school student in Belgrade capital of Serbia, I won 4-th place in that modeling competition as I was skilled.
Righte now after using SW I think I will never get back to SE, and SIEMENS has to learn to improve the interface and software, not marketing.
Thanks Tommy, can you introduce me shortly the site you linked, you can send me a message. :)
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
While the interface could use some work, I think the power and ability of Synchronous Technology more than makes up for it.
selwin lisand over 10 years ago
Solid edge not running stable on my ( VAIO svt1312m1es) how com. Its got 4 processor. And i can not seem to upload step, loosing data in the proces , solid edge assembly also not readable after uploading, please advice.
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
Selwin,
There's a lot of things that can affect stability, so I can't begin to guess which one(s) is causing you troubles.
I see you have a .step file uploaded. I'll take a look at it and see if it worked.
I see you only uploaded the .asm file. That doesn't contains enough info about your design. I think you need to upload all the Solid Edge files too (.asm, .par, .cfg)
In the meantime, do what you can to make your entry even better.
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
Selwin, (and anyone else with .step file troubles) it looks like some of your parts are made of Design bodies and Construction bodies. You have to either:
Turn all the construction bodies to design bodies before exporting them.
-or-
When you export your design as a .step file, there are three buttons "Options...", "Save", and "Cancel". Choose "Options". There check the "Export solids (constructions)", hit "Okay", and it will include all the construction bodies in your .step file when you hit "Save".
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
I hope I'm not posting too much, but I figured out a simple way to do some animation that might be of some help to the other participants. Just look for my Animation folder and you'll find the Solid Edge files I created.
Philip LaRoach over 10 years ago
Scott I'll check out your render method, thanks for the feedback.
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
Ugh, it took a lot of trial and error to get my latest animation to do what I wanted, but I figured it out. I'm still working on my own entry, but I'm happy to help anyone who needs it so they can avoid the same frustrations.
Jonathan Brazeau over 10 years ago

Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
Thank you @Scott Rodgers for generously helping fellow GrabCADrs with tips on animations and STEP exports! You rock. Be sure to give back by giving him feedback and sharing any tips you have, too!
.
@selwin lisand Let me know if you're still having issues and I'll ask the Solid Edge team to track down some help articles for you.
@Philip LaRoach Are you all set? I'm happy to help if you're stuck anywhere. It looks like you're learning and progressing well, so congrats!

Daniel D over 10 years ago
@ Sarah Sigel I'm a little confused concerning deadline informations. The challenge information page says, the contest ends 21th November while the overview states, there are still 6 days remaining. What's true? Thank you for clarification! ;-)
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
Thanks for finding that typo @Daniel D! The Challenge ends November 23 at 23:59pm UTC. The Challenge countdown is correct.
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
That's a relief because I need every hour I can get. My scenes have a lot shiny parts and several light sources, so it's taking my computer 24 hours to render 16 seconds of animation at 800 x 600 x 30 fps. It does look nice though.
For those still needing to get animation done, I would recommend keeping it simple, using a lower resolution, and/or using a lower framerate. There's still enough time to get something impressive done.
Sara Sigel over 10 years ago
These entries are looking goooooood. Get yours uploaded soon and save time for those animations! Only 3 days left!
Philip LaRoach over 10 years ago
Scott good advice, Two nights in a row I've started renderings and have had them crash before I woke up.
Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
Philip (and anyone who had a crash), even if it crashes while doing an animation, the rendered frames are still saved and you can pick up where it left off. You'll have to use a program (I use VirtualDub) to stitch the frames together into a movie.
.
Another time saver, any scene in your animation where everything is stopped for a while, you might want to have KeyShot only do one frame before making things move again. You can just copy and paste that one frame to make it into a dramatic pause.
.
If you see yourself running out of time, just pick out the animations you want to show and just render those scenes. It won't be perfect, but you'll have something to show for your work. I put together an amazing final scene, but it would have taken 5 days to process. So I'm rendering a few clips and will put them together right before the deadline and pray it's good enough.
Philip LaRoach over 10 years ago
Scott, good info. I have gone a little basic and rendered each frame and used windows movie maker to put them together stop motion style.

@Francesco Arfilli @Scott Rodgers You shouldn't update your entries until after the selection process like @Thomas Stokhof de Jong says.

Scott Rodgers over 10 years ago
I don't really have a native CAD that can do it right now. If I get a paying side job in the near future, I'll get a Solid Edge subscription. If there's any time left over after I've done the job, I'll look at finishing the Cartenstein.
