Mice are a personal preference. If you're going to take the time to learn an unconventional device, odds are, you'll adapt to it and like it. If not, you're wasting your money.
Trackballs are good when you need to precisely position the cursor and have it hold it’s position momentarily. That’s something not normally needed for CAD. Otherwise I find you spend too much time moving a trackball around as compared to a good mouse. I tried using one for a while for CAD and the result was a cramped hand and significantly reduced productivity.
On the other hand tremendous productivity gains can be had by adding a 3D input device in addition to the mouse. A device such as the Spacemouse Pro from 3dconnexion is highly recommended. Once you try a space mouse you will wonder how you ever got along without one. Changing from your average mouse to a high resolution precision mouse from a company like 3dconnexion will also have positive results.
