Show off your skills and solve real design problems
We challenge you to design a new docking station that can hold and charge both the new Apple Watch™ and the current iPhone® 5, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus (*).
The goal is to make not just another dock like the many that are out there, but an exclusive accessory that fits Carus' brand aspiration. Besides its functionality as a docking device, it must maintain a representative appearance even when no phone or watch is docked in.
The dock should be a nice place to rest and charge the watch, and should also have an iPhone dock with a lightning plug. Since the Apple Watch will usually get charged at night, the docking station would most likely be used as a bedside device. This is, however, not a general criteria. Rather, the dock should work in multiple home environments. Nice to have would be spin-off products resembling stand-alone watch docks or iPhone docks.
Thinking of likely environments, we ask you to be creative and think of additional side features it could contain. Maybe it could include a nice bedside lamp, for example.
What other cool features can you think of? The material used should be aluminum. Raw materials can either be extrusion profiles or solid aluminum. Feel free to combine it with printed glass. Carus’ technological expertise lies in aluminum machining, laser engraving, electronic development as well as software development.
If a final product based on a winning design is entered into any design award competitions, the winner will be listed as designer.
(*) iPhone and Apple Watch are trademarks of Apple Inc.
You must include:
- STEP or IGES version.
- Description supporting your design.
You are encouraged to include:
- Native SolidWorks version.
- Great renderings are a plus!
Technical requirements:
- The watch charging part of the dock must include Apple's standard watch charger.
- If your design finds the room, you are encouraged to include additional USB sockets.
The winning design will:
- Match Carus design
- Be unique
- Be sleek and simple
- Be marketable
- Be manufacturable with our current technology
Additional guidelines (added April 30):
- Please DO NOT include Apple logo in your design.
- Carus logo file is for downloading below.

Very nice challenge! But is it possible to find the Apple standard watch charger specification somewhere?

Do the specs for the design need to be done in Metric?
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Yes, the units should be set to metric standards.

Hello abhishek,
the logo itself does not match any known font. It has a cousin so to say, but each letter was manually altered. I could however, provide a vector graphic for the logo.

I have few questions :
1. Are we must include 2 a lightning plug in our design? first for iphone charger sign and second for apple watch?
2. Are all material must aluminium? are injection plastic are considered?
3. Are the charging method still use manual method (plug the cable into devices) or can use wireless charging method? The apple watch are charging and attach with magnet system isn't it?
Best Regards,
Ridwan S
Ridwan Sept almost 10 years ago
I see the video and I have a questions about manufacturing process :
Are the mass production method use CNC Machining and the finishing with hand made to get precisious and quality products? Or we can use aluminium stamping, casting, forming or another method to create a product?
Are we can added color painting finishing process? or the product must have metalic texture and color (silver)?
geo almost 10 years ago
... or the product must have metalic texture and color (silver)?...
I think, all of our designs are made by men and the designs are to masculin.
But the half of the customers are women. Perhaps we try some designs for women.
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Hello Ridwan,
1. The design must have a lightning plug only for the Iphone. The apple watch has a seperate MagSafe charger. Please find the specifications on your own. I have one here and could give dimensions if not otherwise found.
2. Thats a good point. Of course it is not wise to let the phone have direct contact to aluminium. It would cause scratches on either part. There can and should be a lining. This can be a material of your choosing. Injection molded plastic or rubber part is ok.
3. The iphone itself does not support wireless charging. So please use the lightning plug. As for the watch, the MagSafe is induction charging already.
4. Yes any aluminium part should be CNC machined, not injection molded. Basic shape can be aluminium extrusion profile though. And you are right, the precise machining and the handcrafted finish make much of the products quality and appearance.
5. The texture can be either sandblasted, polished or grinded as the othere carus products. Please consider: Polishing is expensive, and grinding can only be applied to flat surfaces. The color can be silver, black, champagne, bronze or gold.
Best regards,
Mark-Anton

Ridwan Sept almost 10 years ago
Sorry if i ask to much, How about the minimum thickness that's considered? Are the minimum radius are 3mm? or every edges of the model must have radius 3mm not more/less than 3mm?
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Hello Ridwan,
no worries about questions. Just ask if you are unclear about anything. Everyone will benefit.
Product quality should be number 1. But it has to stay reasonable to a degree, of course. There is only so much people are willing to pay for a dock.
3mm radius over corners is more like a design guideline, not a rule. And not over every edge anyway. If you check other carus devices, you see that the long edges are quite sharp. They only have a radius of about 0,5. More like a smooth deburr.
Best regards,

Hello Reda,
unfortuantely it is a problem. As you might know, apple is quite strict about these things. As using the apple logo might imply to some people that it is an apple product. Sorry for not stating this at the beginning. We just didn´t think about it. So we would ask you to please remove the logo from "The Station " so none of us has to hassle with any of their lawyers.

A Design Challenge?
This is a request for talented people to submit valuable work on spec to a for profit organization. This degrades the value of quality product design.
Kristopher almost 10 years ago
Jim, welcome to GrabCAD! And why do you feel the need to question a company's route of manufacture? If you don't like it, don't participate. How exactly does this degrade value? Each and every entry challenges the design of all and causes designers to think outside their norm. I think there is less value in a single individual designing products because of it coming from 1 mind, 1 imagination and 1 preset way of thinking. To question innovation is wrong and narrow minded.
Facundo Rodriguez almost 10 years ago
Are we allowed to submit more than one design?
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Facundo, please read the rules of the challenge. "Multiple entries are welcome."
But "Only 1 award per person. "
Jim Jackson almost 10 years ago
Hi Kristopher - As a designer we are constantly trying to raise the awareness of the value of design - your thoughts, talent and experience has value - if you give your intellectual property away for the chance to win a prize you place no more value on your design than you would for a ballot in a draw. What is our time worth?
You are right you do not have to participate - I just hoped that a company that claims to value timeless design would not pose such a contest.
I am not questioning innovation - innovation is my life's blood - innovation should be valued more than by giving it away. The value I see in GrabCad and other communities like it is by giving of your talents to other individuals helps to raise up the entire profession and allows for more innovation.

So the final selection is per person, not per design. What's the point of adding more designs? That's like building a swimming pool in the garden while you can not swim.

Erik Janssen, by adding more designs one can increase the probability of winning and demonstrate to the judges and the community, their capability to come up with a broad range of design concepts

Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Hello Monir,
It is not a rule that it must support both variants. But you can assess yourself that supporting only open straps would automatically limit potential customers. I don´t know the ratio of open to closed straps sold. But considering that the watch is designed to allow a quick change of the straps it is probably wise to support both.
Best regards,
Mark-Anton
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Monirs question sparked an idea in me for an additional feature. Has anyone of you thought about that people might have several different straps for their watch, to change depending on the occasion? Would it not be nice to have a place to store them?
Just a thought. Maybe you can make something out of it.
Best regards

Monir Behzadpour almost 10 years ago

Flaviano Crespi almost 10 years ago
I have a question for Mark Anton Duffner:
The connector Lightning for iPhone 6 is composed of the part of the contacts with dimension about 6,75x6,68 mm which enters the iPhone female contact,
a second rigid part with size 12x7,7 mm, another one semi flexible part that protect the electric cable with size dia 3,9 x10,
after begins the cable itself, which can be bent into a convenient curve.
So if the connector is placed in a vertical position the minimum distance between the bottom of the phone to the support surface 0.0 of the device is:
7.7 +10 + the radius of the cable curve, suppose 10 mm,
total 27.7 .... 30 mm.
The question is this:
If the position of the iPhone is perfectly vertical, will be used in full parts the Apple Lightning connector accommodated in a container with the minimum height above mentioned (about 30 mm), or Carus can produce a special connector similar to Lighntin but with minimum size vertical extremely small, perhaps with horizontal output at 90 ° so as to be housed in the supports "a tile" with minimum height that characterize the brand Carus?
If the answer is yes, what is this minimum height?
Thanks for a response.
Best regards
Flaviano Crespi
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Hello Flaviano,
while I salute your obvious efforts towards technical feasibility, in this case I can ensure you that you don´t have to worry about too little space for the lighting connector. We will not be using a standard charger cable as delivered with a phone. The connector will be a component mounted on a pcb below the docking port. No cable attached. These connectors are available in different configurations for manufacturing companies directly from Apple as well as from different Asian third party suppliers. Unfortunately I am not at liberty to share the detailed technical specs because of a confidentiality agreement.
But to give you a rough assessment, I guess the minimum thickness should not drop below 12 mm. Increased by the depth of any potential pocket in your design to hold the phone.
I hope I was able to answer your question sufficiently.
Good luck and best regards,
Mark-Anton

Hi I saw a question on here a few days ago that has not been addressed. I was wondering the same thing. Erik Janssen asker 13 days ago Is there also a royalty opportunity? Today I saw on the Carus website that this is a new thing they are marketing. I think some royalties for the winner will be nice. http://www.carus-concepts.com/en/accessoires-en/.
is there going to be any for the winner. Please advise.
Mark-Anton Duffner almost 10 years ago
Hello Orlando,
I did not reply to that question because I had no clear answer to it, yet. We had pondered on this even before Erik asked. Fact is, we are not prepared to guarantee any royalty agreement as part of the challenge. Partly because it would automatically prompt tons of questions and legal issues. However, we don´t rule it out either. The way we I see it, any design selected, however detailed, will still need a lot of engineering, adaption and reworking. After selecting a winning design we will contact the engineer outside of GrabCad and discuss with him the possibility to participate as a freelancer in finalising the design into a manufacturable product. Another conceivable contribution could be the creation of photo realistic renderings for the purpose of marketing. This will of course, mainly be a matter of the persons abilities to do so. At that point we´d more than willing to compensate such efforts in form of a royalty agreement. Everyone please understand this as a possibility, not a guarantee!
Any details of such an agreement will be part of a personal negotiation outside of GrabCad. Therefore, I will not answer any further questions regarding royalties.
I hope this to be an adequate answer to Eriks and your question.
Best regards,
Mark-Anton

Hello Mr Mark,
A small clarification... Will the Apple Watch charger be included with the product or has to be fitted in by the user ? Either ways I understand it is the standard charger from Apple that is going to be used.
Apple manufactures two types of chargers, one entirely of polished metal and the other with plastic coating ( which increases the thickness by appr. 1.3 mm), which comes along with the sports variant.Though the latter is good for preventing scratches, I just wanted to know your take on it if the charger is going to be included with the product.
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Chris.

David and Josef, you're right, but It is advisable to remove the iPhone cover when you will recharge it, because it can create an overheating on battery. Despite being developed with nanotechnology, it does not have a cooling system such as PC, so it's best to remove the cover to damage the device during charging, Maybe that's why some people didn't develop the dock with some space from covers. :)
David Pedersen over 9 years ago
You right Iris. But again that is why there are many types of covers which does not enclose the phone completely. For example the bumperframe types of covers.
David Pedersen over 9 years ago
By the way Iris what are you referring to with "Despite being developed with nanotechnology, it does not have a cooling system"?

"Thinking of likely environments, we ask you to be creative and think of additional side features it could contain. Maybe it could include a nice bedside lamp, for example. What other cool features can you think of? " These are the words of Carus ... I just see among all the finalists, aluminum sheet and nothing more ...
Perhaps it should also establish the budget to make it happen, and target customers who carus wanted to achieve.
because for sure an aluminum brick costs less than 312 proposals fabulous!
From my point of view ... Carus Duplo 6 by Flaviano Crespi is the most whimsical of all and deserves the first place!
Josef over 9 years ago
Congratulations to the finalists, well done.
I am confused though, because in a previous post before the deadline, Carus stated "..considering that the watch is designed to allow a quick change of the straps it is probably wise to support both (referring to closed and opened straps)." Therefore I rejected all my design entries around proposals supporting opened straps only. But yet 3 of the finalists only supports opened straps. I am just saying that it was misleading statement.
And most of the finalist concepts are not adapted for use of shell covers with different thickness, which I thought was common sense to have. Anyway, thanks for the competition, it was fun participating.

Congratulations to all the finalists and all the other participants!! I hope everyone will have good comments about all the design submitted in this competition, accepting to lose is part of the game...

Thanks to Carus for selection as a finalist.
I find appropriate the comment about the lack of a rear support for the phone, I would have to extend slightly the rear plastic insert.
Congratulations and good luck to all selected!

Congratulations to all finalists! It was a nice challenge. And it's a little bit surprising to me that nearly no electronic (led display etc.) or software developed device was chosen as a finalist. I didn't think that you were expecting extremely simplicity level devices. (I'm not insulting the finalist designs, all are valuable.) I think the part of your (Carus) comment on Edward's design explaining everything. ''The small pocket in front of the phone would be very hard to surface finish. But maybe a nice leather lining would do the trick.'' And it's a little bit late to realize that I was placing a very wrong side of development. :) I'll follow Carus designs in the next time. We'll see what happens.
Greetings to all participants!

on the result page Grabcad ask "Did we leave anything amazing off the list? " I'm thinking yes. Originally they asked "What other cool features can you think of?" But the finalist designs have no outstanding features, in my opinion,. I do not understand what was the point of the contest. I am sure Carus designers could have come up with something similar to the finalist designs. I thought this contest was to think outside the box.

Thank you GrabCAD and Carus and congratulations to the other finalists!
Reading your comment I realised that the idea of having it on the wall is a really good idea. In that case the speaker should be much thinner. Another way would be to change the dimensions of the speaker to make it look like a picture on the wall (bigger from the front and as thin as possible without loosing the audio quality). Well, I hope you'll give me the chance to work on it in the future.
Kind regards,
Benjamin

Thank you Carus and GrabCad for this competiton it is a very cool and exciting way for us designer to show what we do and be challenged by the community. I really look forward to the next steps of this competition ! Here is my response to the comments on my project CARUS DOPPIO
The back support is definitely a part of the project that need to be considered. nevertheless when you see the new Apple lightning dock http://store.apple.com/us/product/MGRM2AM/A/iphone-lightning-dock , we see that back support is not needed at all the time and if the port is well supported it can be enough. The insert for the phone could be deep enough to hold the phone. and the weight of the base could do the trick.
From the general comments regarding compatibility with phone covers or phones thicker than iPhone 6 ( older model) it is Carus call, as we are not really informed about the clientele. I would assume people using your brand are people of high net worth, who would not use a cover.
In order to keep the station as pure as possible, I would recommend to keep the amount of different visible parts low so the object is very integrated and not visually complicated. We could also consider something discreet and similar to the Apple iPod dock http://i.ytimg.com/vi/MUUprVlT4co/hqdefault.jpg
The leather lining on the front is a great idea. it would give a very premium and "Artisan feel" which would warmup the coldness of metal.
I would be very happy to discuss further any aspect of the concept if you feel the need.

Totally agree with Orlando Moreno. Under which criteria you have chosen final works? Under it should be rectangular shaped or under easy manufactured. Don't want to say something bad to designers, but there were much better designs. Anyway, good luck to finalists.

I think the main goal of this competition was to design something with an elegant and stylish look that can fit with any house background and that can be manufactured. Something that can reach the most majority of people taste, no extravaganza or futuristic look that can be cool at the first sight but will not fit with any room style. Thanks to Grabcad and Carus to have chosen 1 of my concept and good luck to all the finalists.

Otabek ,
From the beginning of the competition I suspected that there were hidden criteria .... read my comments at the top

There is a huge difference between the considerations and requirements given.
So in the end, its up to the single person to try and analyze Carus manufacturer capabilities and existing products.
many of the concepts i've seen requires advanced machining eg. 5 axis machining (i personaly dont think they have one) and machines they dont have inhouse.
Just my 2 cents...

The winners have been announced: https://grabcad.com/challenges/the-carus-dock-challenge/results. Congratulations to the winners! There were so many unique solutions for this amazing challenge. To pick the winners, the judges took an in-depth look at how each finalist stacked up in terms of matching the Carus brand, uniqueness, simplicity, marketability, and manufacturability, and rated them from 1 to 10 in each category (10 being criteria fulfilled, 1 being unfulfilled). Thank you to everyone who participated in this exciting challenge!

I was glad to get an honorable mention on this challenge. Being my first challenge this means a lot to me. Especially because my 9 year old Daughter Brittney helped me with the design, It gives me inspiration to enter future contest. Congratulations to all the winners.

Awesome! 4th place! Was so happy to be among the finalists, but a place in top 5 is much better than what I wished for since this was my first challenge to be in. But I think the number 1 was the right choice and I am grateful for my award. Earning a little by training my design skills is just perfect for a design student such as myself.

You will build some other prototype over than the first ?
I'm available for any collaboration.
