I usually wrap text onto a surface, which there are different modes for emboss, deboss, and scribe.

In sketch mode there is a Font icon. Use it to write text which can be used as a feature to add or remove material.
In Solidworks,
1) right click on the surface you want to write and then click on normal to.
2) select that surface and then click on sketch
3) in the panel where you see circle or line or rectangle, you will also notice a letter A. using that letter you can write any text.
4) now you can choose whether you want to go for cut extrude which will give you engraving or you want to go for extrude boss/ base which will give you embossing.
